KGW Holds DTV Test

Submitted by SeattleTVGuy on Fri, 07/18/2008 - 1:11am.

KGW apparently held a DTV test tonight and Seattle's KING-5 will be next week. Apparently, Spokane's KREM2 held a similar test on May 18th.

KATU.tv Up for Auction

Submitted by LynnS on Fri, 07/18/2008 - 12:24pm.

According to IT consultant Andy Purdy, a whole bunch of US TV stations are so asleep at the switch they're about to lose their .tv domain names at auction:

Highly-prized 4-letter domain names using the call letters of 285 U.S. TV stations -- including major affiliates of ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX -- will be auctioned to the public by GoDaddy.com between Saturday, July 19, and Wednesday, July 23.

The TV call-letter domain auction is the largest ever of its kind. Releasing the domains to anonymouse [sic] bidders around the world may have a serious impact on how American broadcasters maintain their online identity, particularly in light of the upcoming switch to digital broadcast.

The call-letter domains represent some of the most successful broadcast stations in the country, including 2 NBC owned-and-operated stations -- WCAU-TV Philadelphia and WTVJ-TV Miami -- and 3 CBS owned-and-operated stations -- KPIX-TV San Francisco, KTVT-TV Dallas/Ft. Worth, and KCCO-TV Minneapolis/St. Paul.

Who cares locally? KATU. Nope, never bothered to register KATU.tv. It appears to be the only Fisher-owned station on the list. No other Oregon stations are on the list, but KOIN station owners New Vision and KGW owners Belo are losing two each, KPTV/KPDX owner Meredith is losing one, and KRCW owner Tribune is losing a whopping three--if they don't pony up at the auction.
