TV news in Portland

I'm new to Portland but it makes no sense to me that we have four (are there more?) complete news teams here in Portland. They show the same news, the same weather and sports, at about the same time.

All that money poured into these operations and careers, is there a big picture that I am missing? Are these stations all profitable?

KEZI: NBC Bill?

Hey Eugeneans! I hear a rumor that KEZI ran eight minutes of Olympic Trials highlights on Sunday night without permission from NBC. I also heard the bill came from NBC today, demanding a cool $240,000. Is true?

Update: From the comments, I have no idea whether this actually happened or not. I would mark it down as "unproved."
