How's that for free advertising?

Submitted by thedude on Tue, 02/13/2007 - 5:08pm.

Quote from above the fold page one story in the Daily Astorian:

"It's time that somebody takes a stand for the working class in this city," resident Katherine Head told the Council. She pointed out the apartment dwellers are the teachers, police officers, journalists and nurses of Seaside. She does not believe residents are getting fair notice of the conversions, or that they are able to appeal them effectively. "They're busy trying to survive."

They fail to mention that 'resident' Katherine Head is also the editor of the Daily A's primary competition, the Seaside Signal.

What ONPA members think makes good advertising

Submitted by thedude on Fri, 02/02/2007 - 11:43am.

Late fall, newspaper people from around the state judged ads submitted by the Mississippi Press Association. These are what we thought were the winners.

(Personal Note: If you don't like the ads, don't be hard on us Oregon folk. We just judged what was given to us.)

Create your own news!

Submitted by thedude on Fri, 02/02/2007 - 11:38am.

A recent page one, main headline reads:
Daily Astorian poll reveals deep divide on LNG plant

Followed by the story:
How The Daily Astorian poll was conducted

I always love shameless self-promotion in my papers, so if anyone else can find examples of media creating its own news and touting it as the biggest item of the day, I'd love to see or hear about them.

Putting out the paper without power.

Submitted by thedude on Sun, 12/17/2006 - 3:19pm.

So the power is back on in Seaside and we've got a bunch of news to fill the paper.
What if the power had not come back on?
The staff and I had planned on making the trip to the Astoria public library to put the paper to bed on my powerbook and print in Longview like usual.
Do you have backup plans? What are they? I'd love to hear them.

T.V. stations???

Submitted by thedude on Sun, 11/05/2006 - 2:20pm.

Okay, I've rejoined the T.V. watching populace (we moved and the new house already has it hooked up).
So please explain the stations to me. Please talk about the Portland parts of the channels and not nationwide broadcasts.

ABC is...

CBS is KOIN right?...

NBC is...

What the hell is PDX?...

CW is the upn/wb combo right... Does anyone actually watch its newscast?

And FOX, well everybody knows about FOX...

Please feel free to throw in as much of your personal opinion as you want, but keep it to my original post. I don't care to read arguing back and forth about why it's b.s.

Ethics question

Submitted by thedude on Tue, 10/24/2006 - 5:02pm.

A coast newspaper recently published an editorial special section detailing its positions on most items on the ballot and who it supports for office. The paper sold advertising in this section. Do you think this was ethical? Newspapers have a general rule of not selling ad space on opinion pages.

The Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association judged the Mississippi Press Association Better Newspaper Contest.
I thought all but a couple of them stunk, but I judged mid-sized weeklies.

What do y'all think of this Woodward fellow?
Should he be praised for his new work?
Is he a jackass that just wrote the book to save his reputation?
Does it matter?
