Weekend Open Thread, Broken Window Edition 7/26/08-7/27/08

Submitted by LynnS on Sat, 07/26/2008 - 11:08pm.

Someone just chucked a piece of wood through one of my side windows. We're fine, but we're confused as to who broke it and why. We're thinking it was random, but it always does make one wonder.

Hope your weekend is better, at least window-wise.

ETA: Cablenut thinks it was a burglary attempt; our neighbor's recycle bin was moved near the broken window. Lovely.

Breaking: New GM at KOIN

Submitted by LynnS on Wed, 07/23/2008 - 12:52pm.

KOINers were surprised today when they were summoned to gatherings to meet the new GM, Tim Perry, late of KSBY in San Luis Obispo. Former GM Chris Sehring is moving further up the corporate ladder within KOIN owner New Vision, but it's not clear where yet. More as the story develops.

On-set Product Placement: Is KPTV Next?

Submitted by bigboy on Tue, 07/22/2008 - 12:25pm.

As reported in the New York Times today, Meredith-owned stations are accepting product placement deals with various brands e.g. McDonald's iced coffee on the anchor desk.

Is it really a big deal though? I assume there are financial arrangements associated with some Good Day Oregon live shots.

Weekend Open Thread, Henry Edition 7/19/08-7/20/08

Submitted by LynnS on Sat, 07/19/2008 - 12:26pm.

This is Henry:

Henry

Henry is a 7-month-old Cavalier King Charles spaniel currently in need of a bath, but that's tomorrow's task. Today Henry is getting to know us and the house, having been given to us by my mother-in-law. Young dogs in general and Cavaliers in particular need lots and lots of attention, and they weren't home enough. We, on the other hand, are always here. Henry is lying at my feet as I type, and I am sincerely glad to no longer be dogless after 18 months.

How's your weekend?

I just want to know what makes KGW the best in town. I hope to hear from people other then KGW people as I know you will brag how ur work is the best place...

KATU.tv Up for Auction

Submitted by LynnS on Fri, 07/18/2008 - 12:24pm.

According to IT consultant Andy Purdy, a whole bunch of US TV stations are so asleep at the switch they're about to lose their .tv domain names at auction:

Highly-prized 4-letter domain names using the call letters of 285 U.S. TV stations -- including major affiliates of ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX -- will be auctioned to the public by GoDaddy.com between Saturday, July 19, and Wednesday, July 23.

The TV call-letter domain auction is the largest ever of its kind. Releasing the domains to anonymouse [sic] bidders around the world may have a serious impact on how American broadcasters maintain their online identity, particularly in light of the upcoming switch to digital broadcast.

The call-letter domains represent some of the most successful broadcast stations in the country, including 2 NBC owned-and-operated stations -- WCAU-TV Philadelphia and WTVJ-TV Miami -- and 3 CBS owned-and-operated stations -- KPIX-TV San Francisco, KTVT-TV Dallas/Ft. Worth, and KCCO-TV Minneapolis/St. Paul.

Who cares locally? KATU. Nope, never bothered to register KATU.tv. It appears to be the only Fisher-owned station on the list. No other Oregon stations are on the list, but KOIN station owners New Vision and KGW owners Belo are losing two each, KPTV/KPDX owner Meredith is losing one, and KRCW owner Tribune is losing a whopping three--if they don't pony up at the auction.

KGW Holds DTV Test

Submitted by SeattleTVGuy on Fri, 07/18/2008 - 1:11am.

KGW apparently held a DTV test tonight and Seattle's KING-5 will be next week. Apparently, Spokane's KREM2 held a similar test on May 18th.

The Definition of Pwned

Submitted by LynnS on Tue, 07/15/2008 - 9:49am.

This isn't local, it's LA, but it's a notable clip:

Two reasons why this is notable: 1) I think audiences are increasingly tired of non-news; and 2) KTLA put this clip up itself. Smart people at KTLA, except the guy doing the live shot. (Note to media: This isn't high school. Geeks pwn the real world. Make fun of us at your peril. And yes, I have seen a naked woman before; I see one in the bathroom mirror just before I shower every day.)

.2 Network is coming to Meredith, but where will other content go?

Submitted by drchaps on Sun, 07/13/2008 - 11:57pm.

Meredith has signed an affiliation deal with .2 network as a digital subchannel, run by Guardian Enterprise Group out of Ohio. It is not known which side of the house will inherit the channel, although my bet is on KPTV as this looks to be a solid contender for movies and content based on the website.

I have an email into KPTV.com to see if they can tell me where the subchannel will end up.
