Trib/KPTV Alliance

Today's memo from Trib executive editor Dwight Jaynes:

Everyone,

Today we're announcing an exciting new partnership that promises to benefit our company of newspapers in many ways. We're now aligned with Fox 12 (KPTV), which is going to give the Portland Tribune and many of its reporters a great deal of additional exposure in the marketplace, as well as provide even more muscle in reporting and investigating the news. I couldn't be more excited, considering the outstanding ratings Fox 12 draws for both its newscasts and its prized morning show, Good Day Oregon -- and the caliber of its reporters. It is a group that works extremely hard and takes its responsibility to the community seriously. We will soon have the opportunity to use Fox 12's video on our web site, as well as share stories and special projects on their air and our paper. There is even active discussion of the station getting a camera in our newsroom soon. Most of all, though, we'll share a passion for seeking out and reporting news. Here is the note Patrick McCreery, the Fox 12 news director, sent to his staff today:

I am very happy to announce the formation of a new news partnership with the Portland Tribune and their 17 suburban publications. This is a significant opportunity for Fox 12 viewers. We have not had the chance to share content with a local newspaper which I believe will broaden and strengthen our coverage. This will be a mutually beneficial partnership as we share content, ideas, resources and branding. Our newsrooms will communicate daily working on both quick turn stories as well as longer form investigations. I believe a Fox 12/Portland Tribune partnership makes sense because we have both proven that you don‚t have to be the biggest to be the best!

Patrick McCreery
News Director
KPTV Fox 12

We're already Portland's best and most trusted source of local news. This partnership ensures our stories will soon get even more exposure, which they richly deserve. The result will be that the Portland Tribune and the CNI papers will continue to grow in quality and stature.

I'm curious about what the "best and most trusted source," uh, source is. I wonder what the metric is. I'm not questioning it per se, I'm just curious.

As for the partnership, I've seen some inklings of it already on 12 so this doesn't take me completely by surprise.

I just hope that it doesn't turn out like KGW and The Oregonian. Where KGW talks about some story and then says that someone should read more about in the Oregonian.

That's all I have to say.

It comes from some audience polling and market research a while back, year or two ago. The Trib scored almost absurdly well for trustworthiness, in particular. Not sure what conclusions you can really draw, but it was pretty stark in what they got back from the firm they hired. People also said they liked longer stories, so go figure.

I thought KOIN had a mysterious partnership with the Trib??

I guess the FOX12ers can stop criticizing KGW's partnership with the Oregonian now.. you know.. since KPTV went out and found one of their own.

KPTV-ers never cared about your partnership with the Oregonian. No one wasted any time bashing it, at least that I ever heard. We really don't spend a lot of our time worrying about what you are doing over there. It seems to be the other way around.

And I like your new slogan over there at 12.. sounds a lot like the one KGW has been using for YEARS.

KOIN has simply blown it off--Congrats to the Trib for recognizing they weren't in a productive, mutually beneficial relationship with a station that can't even cover basic news without trading video with KPTV at every opportunity, and running crews ragged because there are no longer enough staff to cover stories in the metro area, let alone statewide.

Just wait until you see the changes coming on their morning news program!

Mike Donahue is taking over Lynn Huston's position. Lynn will be reporting. They put the word out Friday.

Wow. Talk about rearranging the deck chairs.

KOIN management should realize several things:

- CBS affiliates struggle in the morning. It's just the way it is. Sending your most-liked on-air talent to live in obscurity there is not going to help. (Are there any CBS affils in the country that win from 5-7a?)

- Jeff & Kelley may be the worst possible anchor pairing in the history of television. His overinflated ego oozes through the television and creeps people out. She can't stop smiling, even when talking about 32 dead people at Virginia Tech. Totally unacceptable.

- Covering the news still matters in Portland. You've saved a bundle by switching to Ignite, and after a year of pain, you've got 80% of the kinks worked out. Now take some of those savings and cover the news. Hire a few reporters with experience, or at the very least, hire some talent that actually has talent. Sussman's a good get, but he can't make up for the fact that Iwanaga is the only decent reporter on staff.

- My recommendation: Fire Jeff & Kelley. Use the money you save to hire decent reporters. Bring back Reed Coleman to anchor alongside Mike Donahue for the main shows. She's solid and won't cost you a bundle. Save some more cash by saying goodbye to Big Ed Whelan. I realize the guy had a stroke and all, but that's no excuse for being as unfunny as unwatchable as he is. Use that money to hire more photographers to go with the extra reporters.

- With all that in place, you'd have a shot at challenging KGW at 11pm, which is the first place a CBS station should look for a comeback. If you manage to turn things around at 11, then you can look at the mornings or early evenings.

Iwanaga the only decent reporter on staff? You smokin' somethin'? No offense to Joel, he's fine in his own unique way, but there are a small handful of reporters at KOIN, not recently hired, that are "decent", even better than decent, against the odds of the current system. But otherwise you make some good points.

I hear the morning anchor will be gone by the end of July book. The guy, not Jenny.

The trib is owned by Pamplin Media which also owns KPAM . . . KPTV and KXL are news partners . . . Any perceived conflict there?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Mon, 04/23/2007 - 8:29am.

Fox is right wing and so is the Pamplin group. So no big surprise herre.

And....they're not a FOX-owned station. They're a FOX affiliate... run the programming---THAT'S IT !!
Figure it out--- FOX O&O's may (though i doubt it)have a mandate from corporate to spin their news to the right... but even if that were true, it wouldn't affect KPTV. They're owned by a different company--Meredith.
All this deal is about is money, money, money, and making more of it. That's what the FOX news department is out to do(at least their news boss). Seems they have forgotten their charge of being responsible informers of the public, accountable to them, and not the stock holders. That's why they're given the free PUBLIC airwaves.
KGW's not there yet, but they're at the edge of that slippery slope, staring down at it, scratching their head, and contemplating joining KPTV at the bottom of the hill.

KGW and Portland Business Journal

Will the Trib alter its coverage to slime and crime all the time? Since that's all KPTV covers, perhaps the Trib will be going tabloid as well.

You have to wonder, who at the Trib was smoking crack to think this a good deal? Why would you want to tie your journalistic image to another organization that is in the same gutter with the National Inquirer? 'Aliens Stole My Baby' Details at on 10:00, sorry I mean details on page 2!
