I didn't really get it at the time either. But the character was a cross between Ron Burgundy and Maurice Leblanc's: "Arsene Lupin—A genteleman thief." Except he wrote recipes which usually ended in threesomes. And smoked crack in an old-fashioned pipe. The blue lycra ski outfit was supposed to imply a degree of Roger Moore-esque worldly sophistication, except he wore it the whole time, even in the kitchen. So it got sweaty and covered in flour. The rabbit-fur cravat got covered in food, too.
