KATU Is My New Best Friend

Submitted by LynnS on Wed, 08/29/2007 - 9:31pm.

See, the Merc was my best friend when they bought me a chai and sent me a get well card. But now, KATU tried to get me drunk and fed me really good food and gave me a Rockstar and a thumb drive.

OK, so I don't drink Rockstar because it's, like, made by this guy and his kid, plus also the caffeine messes with my heart meds. And I can't drink alcohol. And the thumb drive is only 128M and has a Fisher logo on it (I smell leftover sales gimme). There was, however, a nice M&M-encrusted chocolate bar that I split with Cablenut and the nutlings.

Still! Chai + get well card < shrimp + sushi + really good lemon bars + swag. Merc, you gotta step it up. The next media outlet that wants to be my new BFF, I suggest an interview during a foot massage. Plus also, tell me I'm pretty.

The blogger meetup was interesting. About a hundred of Portland's finest online scribblers were at the KATU studios being wined and buffeted for reasons that remain unclear to all of us--that was the number two question I heard asked besides "What's your blog?" (If you were there and missed me, I was the one tacky enough to wear my Cafepress T with my blog logo on it.)

The question I personally was asked the most was "So how does it feel to be behind enemy lines?" Guys, the stations are not my enemies. I may not be really popular in the management suites, but ND Don Pratt was professional and polite, and both Deb and Steve were gracious when I introduced myself. You guys are my friends, all of you. OK, most of you. Well, I'd like to stop ducking when I drive past a station.

It was great to meet some fellow bloggers, especially JD. What was funny is how the different blogging genres grouped together--the media bloggers in one knot, the knitting bloggers in another, the homebrewing bloggers in a third. The Metbloggers seemed to be the ones circulating the most. Fun night. Thanks, KATU!

Was Brian Berger walking around whining that nobody gives him credit for breaking news?

At this point it's between you and Brian, and I'm pretty much done. I don't know Brian, I don't know you, and I don't really care.

We may not have offered up bacon-covered lemon shrimp, or Andes-grown cactus spines, or whatever it was they were coughing up, but our friendship to you comes out of our own hearts, not some bottomless corporate schmooze slush fund.

Besides which, how many more ways could I have possibly said your hair looks nice short?

p.s. Did anyone figure out what the point was?

OK, the Merc is back to being my BFF. Don, the ball's in your court. You can call me up and say you think I'm losing weight. I would also accept tango lessons from Rod Hill.

That's a shame about Rockstar...now that I'm addicted to the Pomegranate. That's one boycott I sadly can't abide.

I guess bloggers don't have to have the same ethics as real journalists.

Bloggers are transparent about the perks they get, and their passions. Real journalists are not.

...you guys know where I stand on the issues.

I'm a realist. I come to this blog and everything else I've ever written with all my life experiences. I make no claims to false "objectivity." Scott and I bent each other's ears at length on that topic last night.

Here's the deal: If anyone out there wants to peel me a grape* I am all for it. This website makes me bupkis. Well, not quite bupkis, but darn close--on average less than a dollar a day. Our main site supports our far-flung blog empire.

But if, for example, George Lilly personally cut up a Ruth's Chris steak and fed it to me whilst I reclined on a sofa being fanned by hunky firefighters I would still talk smack about KOIN when it's deserved. Anyone can give me any kind of perk--short of a cash payment or something really serious like a car, as if--and I will gleefully tell you every last detail of it and continue on as usual.

Just try me. ;)

*My theme song, btw, written by Portland's own Dave Frishberg--he played a gig in my back yard once at Rob Thomas's wedding. The things you all don't know about me!

First of all, I'm delighted to read that I'm not the only one to shamelessly sport a Cafe Press t-shirt with my blog logo and URL! :)

Secondly, I'm sorry I couldn't attend. Not because of the SWAG (I despise "energy drinks" and have plenty of small thumb drives already, thanks), but because the curiosity factor around why this gathering was held was about an 11 on a scale of 1 to 10. However, it sounds like that issue wouldn't have been resolved anyway.

Thanks for the report. :)

Lynn, he'll tell you anything you want to hear to get what he wants. Don't believe a word.

Name one thing Don "promised" you that you didn't get... besides a promotion you don't deserve.

Someone mush have been mean to Steve and Deb, or the party was too much for them. I noticed both were missing yesterday for the news. Does being gracious wear a person out that much?

Rockstar is not owned or led by Michael Savage,
but by his son. To me, that's a big difference!

Savage helped formulate it. While he's not currently on the board, he helped formulate the drink and unsurprisingly endorses it. That's enough for me. He can say whatever he likes, and I choose not to give him or anything associated with him any of my money. Free market, baby!
