KPTV Visit Report

Submitted by LynnS on Thu, 10/04/2007 - 9:07pm.

The Nutlings and I went to KPTV today and did the big tour courtesy Mark Nelsen. (Pic to follow.) Mark wore his yellow tie, cuz he lurves me. I met Patrick an' Shauna an' Jamie an' Wayne an' Autumn an'...and I forget, because I met a lot of people...oh! and Austin gave me a GDO coffee mug! Gotta put that on the bribe list.

Patrick didn't kill me and was much younger than I expected. I appreciate not being killed.

So anyway, nice facility, guys! It's been 15 years since I've been inside a TV station, lots of changes. Thanks for inviting me!

As we were driving home Lou announced "I'm gonna be a reporter like Mark when I grow up at Fox 12 Oregon." We said, well, you'll have to go to school and get a meteorology degree. "Hm," she said, "then maybe I'll just be a regular reporter. And then a housewife."

Lou is a hoot. That was good for a laugh. I bet she could do it.

"Tell Fox 12 Oregon that I will be there when I am a teenager."

You've got 10 or so years to get ready, guys. I suggest extra soundproofing and building reinforcements.

He wouldn't be THAT much younger than some of the other staffers and they could pay him even less!

is all girl. Wacky, hyper, uber-physical girl, but girl. She plays soccer in dress-up shoes.

Still.. she could get hired here.

Some of us may be young, but we're good at what we do. That's why they hired us.

KPTV hired you primarily because you'll work cheaper than someone with more experience. I'm not saying you can't do the job.. I have no idea who you are.. but in market #23, KPTV probably had lots of more qualified and experienced applicants for your position (especially if you're on-air) Many of those other applicants would expect more money because they're working in bigger markets. Most of KPTV's new people are happy to get a 10k or 15k raise from their small market job. They think they hit it big -- not knowing how much less they're getting paid than other people at other stations. When they get better and figure it all out.. they leave and KPTV goes out and trolls the small markets for another fresh young face. Again, I'm not criticizing KPTV.. Their management is making it work with good ratings and a healthy bottom line. Just stating facts.

The switch to a younger/cheaper workforce is universal in TV news these days. Only a very ignorant person would suggest that it's only happening at KPTV. Just look at other stations in town... have you not read all the comments about KOIN/Montecito/SJL and how cheap they are? Or Fisher's cheapness at KATU? The only real difference is that KPTV's ratings are going up while the others' have tanked or are tanking.

And to those of you who bemoan the younger/cheaper workers, take note of this: KPTV's 10pm news is the top-choice for late news watchers, while KPTV's Good Day Oregon is #1 (and pulling away from KGW) in the morning. Yet all this is accomplished with a young/cheap workforce. How do you like them apples?

Did you read the post? It said KPTV's model was WORKING - paying off with great ratings and a bigger profits. Once again, someone from KPTV is soooooooo sensitive. Whenever someone here points out (accurately) what they're doing, an employee (or ND) must chime in and say: "But everyone else is doing it too!" KPTV is clearly the biggest offender when it comes to younger hires in Portland. FOX12 lets the kids anchor the newscasts. They pay less and expect more out of those young employees. Now -- here's the important part Patrick or whomever is ready to respond: I'm not saying it's a bad thing necessarily -- just reality these days in Portland TV and specifically at KPTV right now.

Thanks for visiting. Glad I caught you and the kids at the last minute. Enjoy the original GDO mug!

since you were inside a TV station? Lynn, I thought you were at K2 for the blogger shindig!

Submitted by LynnS on Fri, 10/05/2007 - 10:58am.

I don't really feel like I've been inside a station unless I've seen at least the newsroom. I got the full dollar tour at 12; I just got the nickel tour at 2, which is fine. They couldn't have 100 people tromping through the newsroom at 7 o'clock at night, not without serious and unnecessary staff exasperation. Bad enough they had to wait for the blogger leftovers. (But they was goooood leftovers.)

12 has its desk out in the open--no soundproofing--which surprised me. It gets very, very noisy in the 12 newsroom. 8's was glassed-in when I was there, and all the noise was thus contained. Mostly.

Oh! and I didn't get to see Kerri's Kitchen. ;)

This is off topic but I would just like to share that Shauna Parsons used to live on my street here in Tualatin. And then she left... And then the neighborhood was sad.

Submitted by LynnS on Fri, 10/05/2007 - 9:11pm.

...is how much BETTER looking they are in person than on TV, to a man and woman--and they're most of them hardly homely on TV. Shauna is much taller than I thought, and even prettier in person. And very nice!

I think it was a big mistake by the GM and staff at KPTV to invite you to the station. It gives the illusion that you have some type of creditability in our industry, and makes it seem that you have some type of importance in the local broadcast community. You are an outsider who started a useless blog for disgruntled employees at TV and radio stations. In fact, I would be willing to bet it's just a couple of people at each of the stations you seem to target that are adding to this blog each day. I'll bet it's the same person at KATU that spreads all those terrible rumors about John Tamerlano, and there are probably two people in the news department at KOIN that are adding all the BS about that station. Don't be fooled Lynn, they were just nice to you so you would say nice things. Those people have a job to do, and it's not easy these days. The last thing they need is a blog that only points out weaknesses.

Submitted by LynnS on Sat, 10/06/2007 - 4:39pm.

But I'm sorry to say, for your comfort at least, that I have more than two people at KOIN-- more than two people at every station in town, way more if you count former employees who remain in touch with colleagues. If this blog has no credibility, just stop reading it. Simple.

I'm not fooled as to why KPTV invited me, any more than I was when the Merc took me out for coffee or KATU invited a bunch of us bloggers for beer and shrimp. And it really doesn't matter to me. I've always said I'd meet with anyone who wants to talk with me, and 12 took me up on it. (The GM had nothing to do with it, by the way; it was Mark Nelsen, and the ND agreed to allow it.)

Anyone else who wants to take me up on it is welcome to, whether outlet or individual or just plain reader. Just ask. I'll even buy, within reason. OMI doesn't have an entertainment budget over $10 or so. ;)

In fact, the 21st is OMI's second birthday and I'm thinking of holding a meet-up of some kind. I'll start a meta thread where we can talk about that if people are interested.

Why even post this type of comment? Some of us rely on this blog to inform us when management won't... and, let's face it, it's a heck of a lot more entertaining than attending a management meeting! Plus, also, it's nice to wallow in others' self pity, and you realize there are other stations worse of than your own. Lynn hit it on the head: you don't like the blog, go away, nobody is forcing you to be here.

Submitted by LynnS on Sat, 10/06/2007 - 10:51pm.

...is they imply that somehow I enjoy dissing people or bringing them down (and that's the only reason I respond to them). I really, really try not to hurt people. That's not why I do this, and if you look at what I write, you'll see it's not *what* I do, either. I'm trying to give the business some badly needed transparency, and I'm doing it with the help of people on the insides of these media outlets. It wouldn't exist if a wide variety of insiders didn't support it with information. And if my email, phone calls and in-person conversations are any indication, OMI is needed and wanted--maybe not by managements, but definitely by the rank and file.

What are you so scared of?

Someone noticing that you aren't doing your job correctly and calling you out on it. If that is the case: then do your job and the rest should take care of its self.

Or could it be that your scared that your employees will actually know what is going on since you don't bother to tell them.
