Besides being a great story about cracking open the vault which is the Portland Police Bureau, this is a old v new media story too. The Mercury broke this story at about 2 PM on their blog (about 16 hours before the Oregonian posted their story) and yet the alliance of medias which intervened didn't include the Merc, which only found out about the hearing after chatting with someone who knew someone involved.
Thanks to the big girls who spent the cash to fight for this access, but they're still getting beat by the little girls who show up and post the story first.
(BTW, the Hatfield Courthouse is a 1999 technological marvel without wi fi.)
