The O failed to grasp the impact on its credibility of choosing to run 2-week old news. Its Editor Notes may have run, but they were almost invisible. Nothing called attention to them. (Through graphics or font choices that could easily have been changed.)
The O's not the only one getting hammered. I'll bet they've had lots of complaints. But the O has no public editor any more so we're not likely to hear how big the backlash was.
In Chicago the Trib is on a very public hot seat with their readers' representative writing, "What makes this special is that it deals with the core issue of credibility. The problem, then, is not merely about the number of complaints. Readers expect the paper to be timely and clear about the news articles it presents."
The bottom line is, the story was no longer relevant, its headline made no sense and the only reason it ran was because dollars were at stake - sadly, at the expense of journalistic credibility.
