As a viewer with no connection to the industry, I can only hope that KOIN will find its way out of the wilderness. Competition is a good thing. Quite honestly, watching the KOIN product is a real challenge. KOIN has good talent but it lacks the kind of solid presentation that I find on KATU, KGW or KPTV. Given the ownership problems that have plagued KOIN for so long, it’s no wonder they’ve languished. It’s going to take a real investment on the part of KOIN’s newest owners to bring it back to life.
A new news director might be a good start. But if station ownership doesn’t give the KOIN news operation the kind of resources it needs to compete with its competition, it won’t mean much.
