KGW: Iveson Out

Submitted by LynnS on Fri, 02/01/2008 - 4:25pm.

The memo from Rod Gramer, quoted in the Pioneer Courthouse Square thread:

It is with regret that I announce that Jennifer Iveson has decided to get out of the broadcasting business. She is going to pursue other interests, most likely outside of Portland. She has been planning this move for some time, so we have been searching for her replacement.

Therefore, I am pleased to announce that we have continued the Tucson to
Portland connection by hiring Erica Heartquist of KVOA to replace Jennifer in April.

Here's more about Heartquist, who is so thrilled to be back in her native Arizona that she's leaving to come back to Oregon. ;) She's a KTVL Medford alum.

Jennifer, congratulations. You're a classy woman who deserves better than what TV news dishes out.

Erica, welcome and good luck. You've just walked into a trap. Good luck ever getting off the early morning shift.

Sure hope you enjoy standing by the side of the road to say, "It's wet, now back to you." "It's a little icy, now back to you." "Yep, it's raining. Must be winter. Back to you."

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Sun, 02/03/2008 - 12:27am.

Damn, I love people here. Don't let the new woman from Arizona even unload the moving van and already you're telling her she's going to hate her shift and will never move up. Really? Go ask Scott Burton if you can ever get off the morning shift at KGW. Don't call him too early though -- he works nights now. Jennifer Iveson worked mornings for about a year. How quickly do you expect people to move up?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Fri, 04/11/2008 - 12:43am.

Erica Heartquest. Is not that great. She dresses in suits that are too tight to short, they look like she is wearing little girls cloths She has them taken in on the sides to make her look curvy, but they only makes her hips look large and wind.. Terrible fashion sense. She is an excellent field reporter. But she is too stiff in personal interviews. She is not inviting like Jennifer Iveson. Interviews with Jennifer Are like like watching two people chat over a cup of coffee.

And Erica Heartquest. She is only friendly to the powers that be.. Anybody else. Well your just out of luck.

If Erica Heartquest must stay. Then keep her in the field, where she is happily detached from people.

And that rule should be... if you're going to talk smack, whether it is legimate or not, you should correctly spell the name of the person you are talking smack about. Adds a little something to the post. Like credibility. Or... maybe you were talking about a different Erica.

Beyond that... seems a little early to pass judgement, doesn't it? Or are you sharing knowledge from a previous experience?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Sun, 05/18/2008 - 1:23am.

Erica Heartquist Is who Im talking about. former KVOA channel 4 reporter. I am speaking from experience. She dresses in suit coats that are to short and taken in on the sides. They look like little girls cloths. Terrible fashion sense and her hair style Oh my gosh she needs help.

Most of all she is to stiff on personal interviews. She sits awkward, and is not inviting like Jennifer Ivenson. Also a former KVOA TV 4 reporter.

Erica Heartquist. Is only attentive to the powers the be, or if you are in her path. And is not sweet and kind as Jennifer Iveson. Who is a person who makes you feel welcome.

On the positive side, Erica Heartquist is a good field reporter. Given assistance in fashion and style. If interviewing. Watch her posture and provide the assistance she needs.

Erica is slow to change. It took over two months at KVOA in Tucson for her to get on the ball. But just could not measure up to the rest when it comes to sharp dressed reporters.

My recommendation is keep her in the field. Wanna see something awkward. Watch her do weather. haha.

Good Luck!

I enjoy Jennifer Iveson's reporting -- I wish her well.

I remember a cute moment in her early days when she was reporting live from the streets and referred to falling snow as a "blizzard." The anchors chuckled and said to the viewers "errrm, she's just here from Arizona."

It was a nice moment.

I think Jennifer Iveson does a really credible job on the noon program at KGW. Hope everything works out well for her.

I remember Heartquist from the Medford station when I lived down there. Let's just say she'll never be accused of being too intellectual.

I like Jennifer a lot and think she's a great reporter. Too bad KGW couldn't (didn't) find a replacement as good as she is. Good luck Jennifer.

Good luck Jennifer and welcome Erica to Portland.

To the negative comments about the new reporter. Sounds like sour grapes to me, got an axe to grind?

KGW knows what they are doing after all they hired Jennifer who is a great reporter; your words.

Good luck Jennifer. Now you can go back to using your real name after those morons forced an air-name on you.

Life will get more real the farther you are from TV.

I heard she's been known as Jennifer Reardon when she worked in Tucson.

Ever think you might be intruding on someone's personal life here? Why don't you just drop it and find some other trivial information to occupy your time.

It just seems to us civilians that changing one's name from Reardon to Iveson for professional reasons seems a little worthless. Doesn't seem to present any advantage.

But what do I know?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Tue, 02/12/2008 - 12:37pm.

I'm not sure either, Rick. In some cases it might be to make the station appear more diverse (even if it's not). I have a cousin who once worked in the biz as a reporter for a TV station in Alaska.

Even though he doesn't have a drop of Hispanic blood, the station made him use "Rodriguez" for his on-air last name.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Tue, 02/12/2008 - 3:08pm.

To answer your question:

You know nothing.

She changed her name for personal reasons. It seems worthless to you because the story behind it is none of your damn business. Go back to the TV Rick before I call you worthless.

Actually, there's a Jen Reardon down in Bend at KTVZ.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Mon, 02/04/2008 - 8:50am.

Standing close to her you can hear the ocean. Check her work at the KVOA webpage and judge for yourselves. This hire is yet another installment of the dumbing down of local news.

Best of luck to Jennifer.

Heartquist is by far the most talented, sharp and balanced reporter I've seen at KVOA. Poignant and poised- she is always first in the game. And, her attitude is postively positive. She sets an example that all of us should follow. She'll be a wonderful addition to KGW.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Mon, 02/04/2008 - 7:45pm.

I agree. I have watched her many reports in Tucson and she does an amazing job. She is smart, classy and upbeat. You can tell she really enjoys her job. I think she will go a long way in this business! I wish her well. She will be missed in Tucson!

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Mon, 02/04/2008 - 2:05pm.

she is a good storyteller and writer, and she can nail a live-shot yes.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Mon, 02/04/2008 - 7:57pm.

I think the negative statements being left on here are really unnecessary. The only thing being dumbed down is this blog for certain individuals leaving tacky comments. It definatley sounds like sour grapes to me too!

Submitted by LynnS on Mon, 02/04/2008 - 11:02pm.

...not that I condone it, but whenever a new reporter comes to the market, the comment here go negative. Especially when it's a woman. But you know, not like I'm implying sexism or anything...

Erica is a great reporter and she'll be sorely missed in Arizona.

To those saying she's awful, why would CNN pick up her story if she was that awful? Sounds like you have some other issues with her.

Good luck to Jennifer, we wish you well.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 02/06/2008 - 10:49am.

CNN picks up reports from anywhere they can. They have 24/7 coverage to fill. Making CNN is no big deal anymore. Now that Erica's in a real market, she'll realize that.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Tue, 02/05/2008 - 10:54am.

I see no sexist comments. No one has stated she "got the job because of her looks", (as was the case with the hire that beat her out of the first round, Ms. Cook.)

So...this what smart local news looks like?:
http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/us/2008/01/03/heartquist.az.beauty.quee...

It's nice to see her friends rally to her support. But there are several other Medford alums in town. Ask them if they would describe her as a "smart" reporter.

I'm sure Ms. Heartquist will do well, and my comments were not meant to be personal (though granted how could they not be taken that way). It just seems, as is the case with our political candidates, that we could do better in a market like Portland.

Submitted by LynnS on Tue, 02/05/2008 - 4:19pm.

Every time a woman joins the market, there's an immediate impugning of her intelligence no matter what she looks like. I do not see that when a man joins the market. The main improvement I've seen is that at least I don't have to throw out a bunch of comments on how the new hire slept her way into the job--which I had to do every single time a woman came into the market for the first 18 months of this site until people figured out I was just going to toss the comment.

Who are these "Medford Alums" you speak of? If she wasn't a good reporter there, how come she won so many awards during her time there?
I think this is a personal attack on her by someone who has a sour taste in their mouth.

Pathetic.

I must say for someone who apparently is not thrilled with this new reporter coming to Portland, you seem to monitor her career very close. To actually go to her current station website and paste links to her stories seems like a lot of work for someone that is just a concerned Portland news viewer. It seems very personal and a bit creepy. Be careful Ms. Heartquist, you could have a stalker on your hands.

Submitted by Robert on Thu, 02/07/2008 - 2:09am.

is completely off base. Think twice about throwing around such a weighty and legal term as "stalker" in the future.

And since when does following a persons career and linking a story on an open and public site to prove a point equate to stalking? What a bogus and hypersensitive claim to make.

We have talent here in Spokane that have personal blogs and friggin' My Space pages...you can also chat with them online during commercial breaks if'n you wanted to! It's all transparent in this glorious cyber-world we live in. Grow up.

looks like the link referred to the CNN story they were discussing. This is nothing, you should see how some of the new hires get slammed here. I worked in Medford several years ago but don't remember her.

Anyway, good luck to both.

Submitted by former insider (not verified) on Thu, 02/07/2008 - 9:58am.

what does Haertquist have her own staff of bloggers? I remember her being the "perky morning weather girl" in Med. Now she's a reporter in the state's largest market. She has less experience than many others in Portland and should expect some scrutiny. Everyone has a right to his or her own opinions, and to express them.

Good for her, but yes it makes me wonder too.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Thu, 02/07/2008 - 4:03pm.

Believe it or not, many people in the TV business rise to bigger markets with less experience. You should be happy she spent ANY time in a small market like Medford.. much less Tucson.

I'm sure you would know.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Fri, 02/08/2008 - 6:16am.

It must be really easy to tell someone to get a thicker skin when you are hiding behind your anonymity. You clearly work in the business or have in the past so, why don't you tell everyone your real name and see how many people have negative things to say about you.....

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Fri, 02/08/2008 - 6:23am.

Instead of worrying about how thick Ms. Hearquist's skin is maybe you should be concerned with how low your self esteem is. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, which you left in your first posting. However, when you have to come on this blog EVERY SINGLE DAY to continually attack someone, you prove the theory that people tear others down to make themselves feel better. Maybe you should do some self reflection and figure out why it is so important to you to do this...I think anyone who has read all of this knows it is not your concern for the integrity of the Portland news.

Submitted by Tv_Viewer on Fri, 02/08/2008 - 3:26pm.

Grow up. This is getting really tiresome. I know what you are going to say: I don't have to read it and you are right. But still: I'm going to say it: grow up.

Now I am not a big fan of joining blogs, but I had to finally speak out and say how surprised I am at the lack of professionalism towards Ms. Heartquist. Ms. Heartquist has not even started at KGW and already she is receiving bad press (no pun intended). For those of you who berate her, yes you are entitled to your opinions, however I feel it would be more professional to welcome the new hiree and offer some help or advice for a successful career in a new market. Or say nothing at all. I am always disappointed when I see others in positions of power forget where they came from as if they think they are better than everyone else. You started at the bottom and worked your way up just as Ms. Heartquist has. You have endured much and struggled overcoming obstacles/challenges. But, does that make you better than the next person trying to do the same thing in the same market? I think not! Would it not be more advantageous to offer positive re-inforcement to ensure Ms. Heartquist's success? After all her success is your success. I feel better knowing I helped someone reach the top, than hold them down at the bottom. KGW would not have hired Ms. Heartquist if they did not feel she was more than qualified. Therefore, to KGW, I believe you made a wise choice and won't be disappointed. To Ms. Iveson, thank you for years of service to the news community and best of luck in your new endeavors. To Ms. Heartquist good luck in your new position. If there is anything I can impart on you for your success it would be my favorite quote by Thoreau, "He/She who advances confidently in the direction of his/her dreams and endeavors to live the life which he/she has imagined, will meet a success not expected in common hours." For those who want to berate me the choice is yours, but I do not forget where I came from.

Erica is leaving the end of March, and will start in April with KGW. I know Erica personally and she is a LOVELY person and has a true passion for reporting in a classy, tasteful way. Erica does have a myspace, and as far as I know, does socialize on the internet. She has so much talent, and I truly believe her finest pieces are yet to come. Love you Erica! Wish you the best! Best of luck to Ms Iveson, as well.

As a media consumer, Jennifer Iveson never positively impressed me with her reporting. On the other hand her ability to-speak-with-practically-no-breathing-for-almost-a-minute-and-regularly-repeat-herself-ad-nauseam-makes-me-wonder-how-she-ever-got-in-broadcasting.

Anybody know where Jennifer Iveson AKA Jennifer Reardon Whereabouts Is now that she left KGW Portland Oregon News? Please email me. reloytapia@yahoo.com I used to be her personal Mexican cook and friend In her former Tucson, Arizona KVOA news station.. She knew me as AKA Tamale Time. It is a personal name we came up with. I promised her the first copy of my cook book. In Arizona I am the best Mexican cook in the state.
