Dear Lynn S....It was the desk's fault. I have a copy of the memo that was e-mailed to everybody including Huston from the desk. If you want a copy I can send it to you. This memo was sent all the reporters involved. The memo went out to 14 people including Huston, and his photographer that morning. Everybody there KNOWS it.
The memo says "The plan is to be live in the am shows saying, she's arriving here". Those are instructions to Huston and the photographer. They were to be there at noon also.
They gave him bogus information, he does live shots about Bush's pending arrival, then he finds out the plane got there the day before. He just felt so angry and humiliated. But, he never went into a tirade. Then, they come down on him for the Bush family problems that every media outlet talks about now and then, which should not have been a problem.
The desk at KOIN just screwed up and he was fed up with the place. They didn't have a chance to fire him, he was gone. I don't think the place was out to screw him, but I certainly see why he felt that way. They didn't show him much consideration. Just came down to incompetence and short staff I guess.
And I don't feel he has had anything to do with postings here. He once told me Jeff A and Teresa S. told him on his first day of work the bloggers would do nothing but bash him, so don't go on those sites. They gave him good advice wouldn't you say? I never saw him once get on this site or talk about it. So I'm sure he knows better than to even look here at this point. And everybody knew his viewpoints from staff meetings and talks around the newsroom so it's easy for someone to repeat them.
I don't think he was a bad hire. And he wasn't a fish out of water. KOIN just doesn't know how to capitalize on peoples talents. That's the problem. Not him. In fact, he was very good. I do think people here can't deal with diversity. Some of the usual suspects were just vicious toward him. KOIN just is too stuck in it's ways and it just does same old, same old M.O.
Example, Ken Boddie is great and they stick him with weekends for a hundred years. There's no excuse for that! There have been any number of other talented people besides Lynn that just feel abused and leave. Then they wonder why they get sued. No surprise.
Thanks for reading.
