I just finished watching part one of a two part interview on C-SPAN with former CBS and NBC correspondent and anchor Roger Mudd hosted by Brian Lamb. Absolutely fascinating stuff. Watching Roger Mudd tonight made me think about television news of yesteryear versus television news of today. Some on this blog have complained that those of us who look backward are fooling ourselves – that those days are gone forever. This is true, time has passed, but the quality of reporting in those days was golden – and the commentary even more golden. I love watching old clips of stories broadcast on the big three networks – Vietnam, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Civil Rights movement, Watergate. Today’s instant 24/7, in your face graphics laden coverage seems to lack the same depth or thoughtfulness than in years past. Plus commentary back then was much more compelling than the blatantly partisan tripe offered up today, especially on cable.

For all that technology has done to improve our lives; there is much to be said about the gentile sensitivity of television news in a bygone era.
