Today is Nutling LouLou's seventh birthday! You may remember Lou as the one of my daughters who, after touring KPTV, announced that when she grew up "I'm going to go work at Fox-12-Oregon-First-Live-Local, Mom, and be a reporter. And then I'll go to college." I said fine, as long as you're the reporter on 12 and not the story.

What's up, docs?

Now that KOIN has new ownership and the new news director has been on the job for 4 months or so now, are there any changes coming?

When I was a young kid of around 10 or so, I can remember pretending to be Roger Mudd doing the news from the living room of my family home. With my tape recorder, microphone and script, I’d do my nightly news broadcast.

The biggest day of my lackluster college career was meeting CNN Headline News anchor Chuck Roberts. I was at the CNN Center in Atlanta with a friend when I saw all 5’ 6” of him come out of the CNN studios. I walked up to him and told him I wanted his job. He laughed and offered to give my friend and me a tour of the CNN studio the following Monday. So my friend David and I returned that Monday and for about an hour, Chuck Roberts showed us around the CNN studios. It was wonderful. While I was there, I saw former KGW anchor Ralph Wange. It was quite an experience. For the record, I should note that Chuck Roberts has one of the foulest mouths I’ve ever heard. LOL.

I’ve had the opportunity to visit all but two of the TV stations in Portland, those being KPTV and KPDX. What struck me is lack of size of the news sets. Television makes everything seem so large. I visited KOIN a few times and had the opportunity to meet one of Portland’s premier anchors Mike Donahue. I was taken by his absolute modesty.

My KATU visit was made possible because a friend from high school was interning their while a student in college. We watched the 5pm news with Jeff Gianola and Julie Emry from the control room. What I most remember is my friend telling me of a party she attended hosted by Jeff Gianola at his home that summer. Lots of people, lots to drink.

My trip to KGW was made possible because I was a contestant on “On the Spot” with Larry Blackmar, Tracy Barry’s husband. I saw Pete Schulberg for about 2 seconds following the conclusion of the 5pm news. Plus I saw the KGW News 8 set. It was tiny. Oh, I came in third place. But I won some very nice consolation prizes, even had to pay federal income taxes on them.

Given that I grew up in the area, I should have landed at KPTV at least once. In my house, Ramblin’ Rod was required viewing before we left for school. I knew several people who appeared on his morning show, none though smile winners.

Anyway, happy birthday to your daughter and may she secure gainful employment at KPTV.

I know this is very random, but we were having a debate in the newsroom regarding the iNews instant message, or "top line" feature. Is is possible for someone in management to see those messages? We were told it was not possible, then a new producer told us that management can read them. So yeah, we've been saying less than nice things about our ND. Has he been reading them? Oh well!!!

I don't know how else to say this but you're an idiot. Why would you write bad things about your boss on a newsroom computer? Didn't you ever consider he might have access to the information? Is your disdain for the boss so overwhelming that you must gossip with your co-workers about it? Time to get a new job (and grow-up) BTW, you might need a new job. Top lines are retrievable - just like an email and since news managers read this site, I assume the ND with "inews" in his shop will be retrieving those top lines real soon. Good luck explaining those rants face to face with the person who probably hired you and can certainly fire you.

If you are on a company networked computer then management can read ANYTHING you type on it. They may need an IT guy's help to do it, but they have the right to snoop if they want.
Like it or not, there is no such thing as privacy on a company computer. And they don't have to tell you either if they go snooping on your activities.
Every keystroke is likely preserved in some backup tape or disk.

yeah I'm the only one who ever talks smack about my boss. I'm so immature. BTW, I'm not stupid enough to out myself like that. It's similar to iNews. I could care less what the moron thinks about me. If you weren't aware, you cannot get fired for calling your boss an idiot even on company time. Even if you can, who freaking cares.

Your self-righteous pitiful remarks shows how miserable you are with your own position in life.

Thanks for the info!

...for this because anything created on company equipment is therefore considered company property and can be accessed as deemed necessary by management.

Is it worth the time and energy to launch an office investigation/purge of smack talkers? Probably not. Email has just replaced the water-cooler and the restroom as places where the whiners congretate, that's all.

You work for a moron and you don't "freaking" care if you get fired (your words)

I work for a great guy and I love my job.

BTW, you CAN (and probably would) get fired for calling your boss an idiot. If you don't believe me, stop hiding behind your top line gossip and walk into his office and tell him what you think of him. You won't do it because you DO care about your job or you wouldn't have written the original post asking if you'll get caught bad-mouthing the boss.

Since it's open... I just saw a commercial for that mattress company that usually has the husband/wife team; sleep like a baby... That one. Anyway, the guy isn't in the commercial and I noticed that the wife ain't wearing a ring on her finger. Hmmmmm... Maybe she downsized from a king to a twin?

We've been talking about this for weeks. There has apparently been a sundering of the sheets at Mattress World.

After being booted from KPNW from his popular local sports show Sports Talk, he has now found a home at Eugene's ESPN sports station KSCR 1320 2-3pm slot. He made his debut yesterday.
