KATU Kills McOmie Sendoff

Submitted by LynnS on Sun, 04/27/2008 - 8:56pm.

I didn't see it myself, but at ifish.net Bill Monroe is reporting that KATU killed Grant McOmie's sendoff piece:

It was, as I understand it, a four-minute complilation of his 22 years of stories and memories meant to wrap up his presence there. ...

[W]ord from above was that it was "not approved content." or something like that.

More at Monroe's OLive blog:

McOmie said once again he's puzzled, since the news is out and the station has taken flak from all sides since the announcement last week.

"It wasn't anything controversial at all," he said. "Just 22 years of good memories boiled into a few minutes to say goodbye."

To his credit, McOmie turned down a fishing trip in the morning because he's working with a station photographer on one last assignment that he told them he would produce.

He's not very optimistic, though, that it will air either. His last day is Wednesday.

"I think in their eyes I'm done," he said. "I promised them I'd do it and I will...I can't wait for Thursday to get here. I'm all done being sad and baffled. Just looking forward to Thursday."

*shaking head* This business.

I got this in email:

I didn't do the photo hack, and as it happens, I'm watching KATU right this minute. But I think there are a few pissed-off people out there...

Second... and Third your comment, Lynn! What a shame...

I'm ashamed at this very moment that I work in that building. Grant, know most of us at KATU have appreciated and looked up to the work you do. I wish you all the best. Don't look back.

I just sent KATU management this e-mail:

I'm so disgusted with KATU right now I can hardly stand it. Grant McOmie spent 22 years of his professional life at KATU and you can't give him an appropriate send off. Tell your station manager and Don Pratt that they both should be ashamed of themselves. It's the station manager and Pratt that should be shown the door. The station has lagged in the rating for years -- and they fire their best storyteller. This makes no sense. I guess you have to make room for another "2 on Your Side Investigator" or pay for your over the top news set. When in the hell is a new news set news? I see you promoting it on your website but can't give Grant an appropriate goodbye. Really shows no class, period. You're not journalists, you're entertainers -- and not very talented ones at that.

Grant was PART TIME and he mailed it in, literally. He re-cued the same stories over and over again. How can you all be so shocked? He was producing one story a week and it wasn't new!!! You act like they just let Edward R. Murrow go. Give me a break!

In response to "Grant Not God", maybe you should have had him "mail in" more stuff. It certainly is one of the better segments on our local television. His stories were always refreshing and provided some encouragement to enjoy or outdoors while we can. Seems that for a part time guy, he did a lot better job than a most of the full time "guys". I hope another station picks Grant up soon. It will be a great opportunity for one of the stations to bring new viewers.

You bet there are pissed off people.... I am one of them.

Many of us here in Corvallis and Albany are quite disheartened at this blatant disregard for coverage of subjects dear to the hearts of many in this valley. Amid all the bad news about Maxx trains running people over, travel companies scamming Portlanders, and other stories those of us in the mid-valley don't really care about (but are forced to endure because companies like Dish Network won't give us the option of Eugene locals), it was always refreshing to see Grant McOmie discuss subjects to which we can relate, and appreciate.

I agree -- no reason to watch KATU news anymore. I have begun streaming in news from Eugene channels -- not ideal, but a lot more relevant.

...who feel the same way. We're all confused as to why they let him go and on top of that why they axed the goodbye piece. The story in the Oregonian probably did it. I do get frustrated when viewers blame all the staff when something like this happens. We didn't do anything. Look at upper management if you want to point fingers.

There is a very disturbing trend at KATU
In case you haven't noticed, KATU has lost at least a dozen quality veteran employees since the Colleen Brown/John Tamerlano regime began.
You may have your differences and opinions about prior management, but they have all been replaced by cheaper, less capable managers, who are systematically destroying the television station. The performance speaks for itself: Lower ratings, with last May's Nielsen recording some of the lowest news ratings in the station's history. There is also a lower pure advertising revenue share, in spite of a vastly improved ABC Television Network, that even management can't wreck.
When people like Dan Christopher, Julia Radlick, Grant McComie, and respected sales guy, Byron Leeper, leave the station, the management spin is that they "found a new opportunity", or "they were mailing it in", or "we are moving in a new direction, and they were not in our future plans."
JT, what are your future plans? Drive out every well paid employee and save money for your bonus and a few select station PALS. Continue to bring in low paid inexperienced employees at all levels and the station will continue its steady decline.
A revamped news set is just window dressing for a reporting team of mostly strangers. The employees know it and the viewers see it. Grant pulled the mask off JT in the Oregonian article, and now he is shown the door even sooner.
This charade is about to end. CEO Colleen Brown is under fire by major shareholder Mario Gabelli and others for the Bakersfield purchase and other missteps. She and JT will be gone before year's end. Sadly, the damage has already has been done to many people's lives and the on air product.

How is KATU deciding who stays and who goes? It can't just be about salary. They have canned some well-liked people while leaving some veterans who, quite frankly, aren't getting it done. These remaining veterans are probably making nice salaries too.. and not bringing in the viewers. I won't name any names but some of KATU's main on air people have been on Portland TV a long time and their ratings are worse than last year. How do these people get to keep their jobs while others are shown the door?

Who are the "inexperienced employees" you speak of???? Just curious. I think they've made some good hires. Julia left on her own. Reporting team of strangers? Specific examples please.

I sent an e-mail to KATU asking why and this is only time that I didn't get an answer. Grant deserves better and I hope that he gets it.

I'm sorry for those of you who don't like Grant McOmie's work. That's your opinion.

Mine is that he is/was part of the Oregon culture like Ramblin' Rod or Bud Clark. I'm sure the management at KATU would slap both of them around too, if they had the chance. Yes, I know Ramblin' is at the big cartoon show in the sky.

Anyway, I sent in my e-mail basically saying that if you want to be a knock-off of KPTV just keep going down this road. I have all but given up on local TV news, simply because it feels less like Oregon now and more like LA.

I like the newspaper anyway.

Exactly. People like you don't even watch KATU anymore, that's why Grant is gone. If his fans aren't watching, why would they keep him around?

Submitted by Tv_Viewer on Thu, 05/01/2008 - 12:06am.

I guess you didn't get it: I watched till they took him off the air. Why is that so hard to understand.

the ND is simply out of touch and full of himself. He's done nothing to help rating since he took over. Aside from his few ass-kissing minion producers, no one thinks he's done much of anything there. Then he cans the one thing that sets them apart? Go figure.

Don has a lot of support in the newsroom.

Glad that you like your boss but you do realize that some decisions that the station has been making lately aren't sitting well with viewers.

The Grant decision. Yes. Which other decisions?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Sun, 05/04/2008 - 11:55am.

Don DOES NOT have a lot of support in the newsroom and he lost a little bit more with these recent firings. They were bad decisions that were handled poorly.

HA! What a joke. Grant was the ONE thing that sets us apart? Yeah right. He hasn't stepped foot in the newsroom in a year and no one know when he stories aired. Don does have a lot of support. There are some lazy people who are afraid of change, but most of us, even those who weren't hired by Don, like him.
