Weekend Open Thread, Life After Radio Edition 5/2/08-5/4/08

Had a visitor the other day here at OMI Central:

Yes, that's Rebecca Webb. She came over for some tech support and pulled up on her adorable Vespa with a backpack of goodies for lunch (and Cablenut promptly took off around the block on the scooter). Those of you worried about this business, There Is Life After Radio (and TV, and Print).

Wassup?

Whoo Hoo! Go Rebecca!
I love the Scooter and have seriously been thinking of getting one myself.

I see it now !

BTW - Webb is one trusting soul. The only other person I'd let ride my Vespa would be Evel Knievel and since he's dead, it's all academic at this point...

Hope hubby had a great time on the scoot.

seems like there's been some changes in town lately. Openings at KATU and KGW?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Sun, 05/04/2008 - 7:07am.

That the current owners of KOIN have fired all their Engineering Managers and Chiefs at all their television stations and are going to replace them all with one person for the whole chain. Happened on Friday with KOIN's C.E. out the door. He'd been there longer than Grant McComie was at KATU.

Any confirmation of this?

They showed an ad for the weekday morning news with the point of telling us that it was different and now started at 4:57am. Time for the dumb question: why 4:57am?

Submitted by rfaaberg on Sun, 05/04/2008 - 4:26pm.

They also do that with Jeopardy, according to my clocks anyway.

Getting a jump on the competition?

Let's say I buy that logic. What about the fact that KGW and KPTV both start at 4:03am.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Sun, 05/04/2008 - 9:06pm.

KPTV and KGW both start at 4:30AM and they get better ratings than KATU does at 5AM.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Mon, 05/05/2008 - 9:35am.

better than KATU's 6AM ratings!

Jeopardy does not start at 6:57. Your clocks are wrong. Jeopardy starts at 6:58:49. You can set your clocks on it if you get it over the air on an antenna on CH2. A couple seconds later on over the air DT. About 5 seconds later on Comcast.

Submitted by rfaaberg on Mon, 05/05/2008 - 10:14pm.

My clocks are probably slightly off, since I don't really care. No big deal, but I knew Jeopardy was before the "top of the hour".

Good info; thanks. You must work at K2, eh?

That is when they can go out of the previous program from ABC... by contract. They can drop the last segment after the last break, which always ends at 6:57.

Submitted by Myhousemf on Mon, 05/05/2008 - 5:14pm.

The program from 6:30-6:57 is KATU news, not an ABC program.

How much did Goodwill pay KGW for the butt kissing this weekend? Sorry, a thrift store "recycling" their unwanted goods isn't news. Goodwill has two choices, pay expensive disposal fees or sell to third world countries. Not a difficult choice and not newsworthy.

KGW also aired a story on Friday night, that appeared to be Seattle-based, about the symbols on plastics, and how it really didn't mean that you can recycle anything plastic. I called the station to remind them that there were two Plastics Round-ups the very next morning, and two more in two weeks. Nice to know the TV stations are just as lame in their research as the print media.

Any word on what is up with The Game. It stars up in a week and still no word on whether Katy Brown will be a part of it? Will she keep her KATU gig?

Lately - KATU has BEAT KPTV in the 5am to 6am hour.
That's bad for FOX.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Tue, 05/06/2008 - 1:00pm.

KPTV is currently number one at 5am with a 2.4 for the May book so far. KATU isn't even close - they average a 1.3 in the 5am hour.

The morning crew has a good day now and then but overall they are stuck in 3rd place in the morning well behind KPTV and KGW. Now they've fallen behind KOIN at Noon for another 3rd place finish. I can't tell that much has changed in the last couple of years, even with Natali joining the show.

Are any other Dish Network subscribers having terrible problems with KATU's signal? We haven't called it in yet, because we keep thinking it'll get better, but it's making it really hard to watch Lost. It's jumbled/scrambling on both our regular satellite dish, and our HD dish. Any thoughts? Or, maybe I should just call Dish Network straight away? Only 3 days until Lost...

Yes, we have scrambling problems with abc as well, but only in the evenings. This has been going on for about 2 weeks now; it seems to affect only the network shows. Time to call Dish Network...

Recently, and going back a couple months or so, only my local PDX channels via DirecTV would randomly lose signal for 1/2 a second at a time. It would happen over the span of a couple days, then not happen for weeks before doing it again. It would do this primarily in the evening..which drove me nuts.

I called DTV, and they had a few scattered reports about this across the US..but had no explanation.

We moved this past weekend, and haven't hooked DTV back up yet, so I'm not sure if it is still happening.

Is KOIN still transmitting a digital signal? On Comcast's "Digital Basic" tier (which I got in order to see MSNBC) I get the digital hdtv signals, without a box, for KATU, KGW, KOPB, KPTV and KRCW but not KOIN. However, I was receiving their digital signal until a week or so ago.

Submitted by Myhousemf on Wed, 05/07/2008 - 5:15pm.

Same with me. I don't get KOIN DT on cable anymore but I can still get it OTA.

So what are the numbers so far? Who's up? Who's down? Who's winning and who's losing? I hear the KPTV/KATU 4pm is neck and neck. Has KPTV reclaimed mornings? How about the 11pm race... I hear there is a new leader in town... but don't have the numbers to back it up. Let's have the halfway numbers and some analysis.

Mornings -- KPTV/KGW - very close with the edge going to KGW right now but that could easily change.

Noon - KGW running away.. Koin is a surprising 2nd place but barely

Evenings - KGW (as usual) but it's close at 6:30 with all 3 stations in the running.

11PM - Looks like Koin will win this one. KGW is down. Katu and Koin are up.

That's it in a nut shell but a lot can happen in the next 2 weeks.
Stay tuned!
