New Publisher for the Gazette-Times

i'm not sure what this means, but the GT has a new publisher. i'm thinking this is not the Rupert Murdoch kind of publisher, shelling out the bucks to print the thing. seems more like a super-editor, since the various Lee newspapers all have their own publisher.

anyway, his name is Mike McInally, he's from Missoula, Montana, and he came up thru the ranks, beginning as a cub reporter and serving as its editor. he's won awards for the paper, but what it's editorial stance was, or how hard he pushed his reporters to dig into stories, i don't know. anyone familiar with the Missoulan? should we expect real coverage or will it become the OSU Paper of Record?

the full story is at: http://gazettetimes.com/articles/2005/11/09/news/community/1publisher.tx...

on the plus side, we may have a new sax player at the middle school!

I've had lots of email conversations with Mike, although we've never met in person. He strikes me as a thoughful, civic-minded editor. His entire career has been in a college town, somewhat larger than Corvallis, but with a similar vibe. I don't think Corvallis could get a better publisher than someone with his kind of editor's mentality. This is not the kind of person who's going to sacrifice good journalism to squeeze a few more nickels out of the paper.
