God I hate going through ratings, and yet it has to be done.

Looks to me like a good book for 8 and a particularly good book for 12, a not-really-hot book for 2 and as expected a pretty dismal book for 6, which of course is the cue for the KOIN sales apologist.

Previous posters kept saying they were number one in the morning. Did something happen?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Tue, 03/06/2007 - 4:54pm.

KGW won 5AM
KPTV won 6AM
KGW is running promos saying they are #1 (5-7AM) -- don't know if it's true though.
One thing's for sure -- the two stations are fighting it out and it's real close right now. KATU is a distant, distant 3rd place and KOIN is not even in the game. KOIN got hash marks on some mornings during the book. NOBODY watches them in the AM!

If they got rid of that Lynn Huston, maybe they would have a chance at KOIN in the mornings.

KGW claims they won "at Sunrise".

The did in the 5-7 slot they are on the air.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 03/07/2007 - 8:08am.

This is KGW's way of being very vague about exactly what they're claiming. Sunrise is perfectly ambiguous regarding their time slot, because the sun has been rising closer to seven a.m. for the past couple months.

Add the points for the two hours.
KGW 4.6
KPTV 4.5
Only a slight lead but still number one over the two hours.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Tue, 03/06/2007 - 7:23pm.

Nothing happened"
Add the numbers for the two hours and they are #1.
No matter how you try to skew those numbers it still comes out #1.
A close #1 but still #1 giving them bragging rights.

you broke out the 5-7 as one time period, but both KGW and KPTV rate those hours seperately. The truth is KGW won at 5am, and KPTV won at 6am. Winning at 6am is a MUCH bigger deal. And given the larger audience size at 6am, more people watch KPTV from 5-7. Nice try, though.

Ratings are a PERCENTAGE of TV households! If you have a 1 rating -- its the SAME number of households whether it's 5AM or 5PM. Seriously, if you don't get this basic high school math equation -- don't post. You look like an idiot.

Kaplan.

Two little words that say so much.

Miller/Kaplan - your two little words that say so much...

Especially since the data now tell us that KPTV has replaced KOIN as the market's #2 revenue producer.

Spin on....

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Thu, 03/08/2007 - 10:52am.

means that KATU is in 4th place for total ad revenue?

I wonder what would happen if you looked at net profit after overhead and expenses? (KGW isn't an inexpensive operation, you know) I wonder which station makes the most dough overall? Maybe KPTV?

Perhaps KOIN is more profitable than many assume?

In the end, all these TV stations are in business to make money...not just bragging rights.

Submitted by LynnS on Thu, 03/08/2007 - 12:18pm.

I'm sure it's making bags of money.

Now can we fire Jeff Gianola?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Tue, 03/06/2007 - 5:30pm.

Whoops, I guess it's time once again for new graphics, music and set changes at KOIN! Isn't that how they typically react to poor numbers?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Tue, 03/06/2007 - 5:36pm.

So it's not a fair comparison... KGW numbers will be higher in the evenings because of that.

Submitted by Myhousemf on Tue, 03/06/2007 - 5:50pm.

Where is the 5:30PM?

Submitted by thedude on Tue, 03/06/2007 - 6:03pm.

Katu is winning at 4:30. Beat That mo fo's!! :)

And I've never been a K2 fan ever. Deb's presentation is just great.

Now as for that Rod guy, I dunno... Maybe try Bruce in that slot? :-)

Any in the morning news game knows that out of the two hours, the 6am is far more important than the 5am. KPTV was number one at 6am. I defy anyone at KGW to say that wasn't a win. And the above addition is incorrect. Both stations did a 6.6 if you ask Neilson to average the 5am and 6am to the nearest tenth.

The bottom line:
KPTV was number one at 6am, 7am, 8am and only second in the early fringe of 5am. They clearly have the number one morning show in town.

That's ONE in a row. You may have to stop bragging after May. Then again, maybe not. I remember when KPTV ran promos saying "#1 in the morning" and the teeny, tiny fine print at the bottom of the graphic said: "7-9AM". I hate to break it to you but all promo departments stretch the truth to suit their needs. Don't get mad when KGW does it.

Don't look now, but it's come in first a couple of times in the past two weeks and is averaging nearly a 5 rating this month. Last night it beat both KATU and KOIN and behind KGW by only a third of a point. KGW was hoping to take away KPTV viewers with the PAX/WB/CW newscast and I believe they did. But those numbers continue to fall and I think KPTV is getting way more at 11 than they're giving up at 10. Any thoughts? And if FOX 12 say continues to improve and gets a 3.8 or 4 in May.. are there enough viewers at 11 for all four stations to make money? I seriously don't know.

(and I will preface this that I'm not qualified), but I would try and model the news product after KGW or KING in Seattle. Put out a consistent, quality product that feature less sensationalism and more substance. Don't keep changing the look of the newscast. Hire anchors who have high recognition and likeabilty in the market. Market like hell...use all available media to get the message that "KOIN is back". Settle down, let it "simmer" for 1-2 years and they will be competitive again.

They just don't have the bodies to do it. You can't act like KGW with only a quarter of the staff of KGW.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Fri, 03/09/2007 - 6:28pm.

...KOIN doesn't want to be KGW because they don't want to expend large amounts of money to cover the news. They're trying to establish a new model in the market with a stripped down staff fronted by higher priced anchors.

Essentially they believe people won't notice the lack of depth and coverage and will keep on watching. This is a station that has lost market share but though the revenue picture is starting to crack a bit, they're still making enough money and profit to make their plan pay off. Don't expect KOIN to start spending money on equipment, people or coverage - it's not going to happen. Their attitude is we can be the 3rd or 4th place station in the market and still make plenty of money. That's the plan.

which I hadn't realized until recently. Honestly. It turns out KPTV and KGW are trying to increase the ad rates.. which ask anyone for this size market is way overdue. Well KPTV is running out of inventory. So is KGW to some extent. So.. that leaves the middle tier to lower tier advertisers with no where to spend their money, BUT with KOIN. I know it may not make sense to you, but I think KOIN will always have its advertisers.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Fri, 03/09/2007 - 9:26am.

First, I like where you're going with this. Having said that, KOIN would first have to hire solid producers and reporters. KOIN hasn't had a good crop of either for about two years.

There's no need to hire anchors-- just put Mike Donahue back in the chair!

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Fri, 03/09/2007 - 9:39am.

with you. However, I don't think there are journalists at the helm, or at least, they cave to the bean counters...from what I've heard. I do think KOIN needs to hire reporters with major market experience who can elevate its credibility. Not flashy, Fox-types, but engaging, credible reporters who get paid enough to stick around. This is how KING was built, and it is reflected in the tenured reporters.

yeah, you could add in some out-of-fashion ladies suits; perhaps a goodwill-inspired scarf, and some bad 1990's anchor hair, and you are sure to alert some people that you are trying to be KGW. oh, and don't forget the overdramatic delivery. that's consistency all right -- keeping things the same as they were last century.

Moving from other markets where Belo has been a powerhouse (Boise, esp.), I'm just curious why people always turn to their news operations? I think KGW seems pretty good. I'll admit I like katu in the morning a LOT because I truly enjoy Rhonda Shelby's weather delivery. I don't care for their evening 'casts as much. As a new viewer, I never watch KOIN.

In Utah, KSL has always led too, despite the weakness of NBC as a network partner right now. I do know that KUTV was gaining but that may change now that it has been sold out of Viacom.

In the interest of full disclosure, I worked for Fisher in one of their smaller markets. We were always third. I'm not sure why, as we had a hard-working staff that (especially on weekends) was putting out a stronger product. We were competing against a locally-owned company and an owner that runs several small-market stations.
