That Mt. Hood search weekend was huge for KGW... KOIN did a great job on that airshow stuff... Kudos to them... thankful that the whole sex-offender obsession didn't skew the winnerse in this thing... I Would like to see more competition in photography and more enterprising stories across this market as whole next year... These awards are always so interesting... seven eight nine years ago our shop used to throw a big bash for the winners.

Zaffino in third? Wow.

I have to say, KATU reporter Anna Song wins a first in best writing, and holy hell, I'm thinking that was her OHSU tort piece that won first in best investigative reporting as well. No wonder KGW is lurking with her contract up...

Submitted by mfrk on Wed, 03/21/2007 - 7:20am.

Zaffino down to 3rd?

Rod Hill may be the only good thing KATU has going for them. I wonder if he's glad he left KPTV?...

of Mark Nelsen.

I have never been fond of the weather segments at KGW. The actual weather graphics are ugly to begin with, then Matt scribbles all over them and truely makes a mess out of them. They just look sloppy. I have to agree with Lynn that Mark is the leader here in town and I do think it's fair to put Rod in second, followed by Mr. Zaffino. My 2 cents....

congrats to anna song for winning two awards! she's awesome!!

Anna Song, an award winning writer?

In Peter Carlin's recent article on KATU, he quoted 2 lines from an Anna Song 'KATU Investigates: What Are We Afraid Of?':

"But the reality is, none of us are actually dying from those scary-sounding things. The things that are actually killing us are much more common and far less dramatic."

These are sentences from an award winning writer?

Let me offer a rewrite, and then you too can offer your rewrite:

"But the reality is, none of us are actually dying from these scary-sounding diseases (or events). What is killing us is much more common and far less dramantic."

Granted, not award winning writing, but far better than what Anna wrote.

Never, ever, ever, use the word "that". It's a terrible word. It's a "crutch" word. Write a sentence with "that" in it, then rewrite the sentence without "that". Your writing will read 100% better.

What are "things"? Don't use the word "thing". Name it, call it what it is.

And I'm sssssoooooo tired of reporters and anchors starting their reads with the word "well". What does this mean? It adds nothing to the report and gives me the impression the reporter/anchor isn't exactly sure what they're talking about.

Somebody, anybody, tell me what the word "well" means in this contect, Please enlighten me.

What is "dramantic"?
It is not in my dictionary. Talent reads what is written. Many times unseen.

This is a communications industry. Let's do it correctly. (Sorry Lynn).

[But you know I have to "tsk" you anyway. ;)--L]

What site is this being pulled from? Some of us would like to see what the rest of Oregon is doing, lest this blog be re-named "Portland Media Insiders"

Zaffino's a prick, and is like a used-car salesman in personal dealings.

JMO YMMV

But True!

Submitted by mfrk on Wed, 03/21/2007 - 3:45pm.

Thought I'd point out not a signal station out of Portland won anything.

Submitted by pdxtvwatcher on Wed, 03/21/2007 - 4:23pm.

No, there were lots of Oregon winners (from Eugene and Medford) in "Division 2". I only posted the awards for "Division 1", which is Portland.

If someone wants to post the Division 2 results, feel free. I don't have time right now to do it.

There's a second division for smaller markets, the results just weren't posted here.

Please? :)

It's a disgrace that the name Pettes is associated with an award. The reporter/anchor at KDRV messes up every story she reads.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Thu, 03/22/2007 - 8:42am.

I cannot Google the source of this Division 1 or Division 2 information. Nothing comes up on the AP.org website. Pathetic. And this group deems itself worthy to issue awards for "Best Website"?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Thu, 03/22/2007 - 9:27am.

Didn't KATU win all of he major awards last year? What's happened to that station to send it into a spiral?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Thu, 03/22/2007 - 11:25pm.

Look again. KATU still won a lot. There were a few more not listed, like 2nd in the Best Feature category. It was also a strange year for the station considering not having a ND for 8 months. I count

kgw - 12
katu - 11
kptv - 9
koin - 1

put your focus on KOIN. That's sad.

Submitted by Farwest on Fri, 03/23/2007 - 5:39pm.

All right... Here's an open-ended question. Do you think the results are fair that KGW's website got first place and KATU's got second?

My opinion is "no". Before KATU's online renovation, I would definitely agree that KGW won first. However, upon this amazing upgrade and face-lift, I don't believe any of the other stations could out-beat this. What is so special about KGW's website that makes it a 1st place winner? I find KATU to be modern, streamlined, organized, easy to navigate, and wonderfully teched out. Anybody agree?

Submitted by Christiana on Fri, 03/23/2007 - 6:27pm.

The other thing about KGW.COM is that you have to register before you can see most of the website. I have to agree that KATU.COM is better.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Fri, 03/23/2007 - 10:29pm.

I find KATU.com FAR better than KGW's clutter of a site. Belo's cookie cutter designer created a horrible template for their stations to use so it's not entirely KGW's fault. But still...

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Sat, 03/24/2007 - 4:41am.

because I refuse to register on a site just to see something. I know it is a one time thing but I don't care. Unless it is a pay site that I want, make it easy for me to want to go to your site. Why register at KGW.com when I can get the same info from KATU.com without registering.

Submitted by Farwest on Sun, 03/25/2007 - 1:57am.

I am happy to agree that Anna Song really is a good writer. Now to the commenter who wrote about Peter Carlin quoting some of her writing on KATU, I must admit those words were not the strongest and could have benefited from revision. However, I must refute your overall remark. Maybe the choice for quoting by Carlin is a mistake on his own behalf. Maybe it is he who deserves your comment, not Anna. Before judging Ms. Song you must first analyze her work for what it is, juxtapose the content she utilizes to other competing writer, and only then criticize her efforts for what it is or is not.
