Tribune Co. (and Portland's CW) Sold

The Tribune Company, whose assets include such prestigious media brands as the LA Times, the Chicago Tribune, and Portland's CW, has been sold to private investor and media neophyte Sam Zell for $8.2B.

Media neophyte?

For several years Sam Zell owned Jacor Communications (they owned KEX, Z100, K103, and AM 620 here in Portland)...one of the largest radio groups in America...he eventually sold it to Clear Channel.

Zell has been described in most of the press today as a "neophyte." While he may have owned Jacor, he's never owned or run a newspaper before, hence the "neophyte" label you're seeing.

...you don't know anything about Sam Zell, I do because I worked for him. He's a terribly smart man who's got a helluva track record when it comes to owning media properties.

He hires people that are passionate about broadcasting...not a "cut and slash" type of operator. Spends money to make his properties better.

The guy is solid...and typically the people that work for him think he's great.

Nor did I intend to cast aspersions on his abilities. I merely meant that he is being described in several of today's stories as a "neophyte" at running newspapers. Not all of us know the man and must depend upon, that's right, the media for our information, so it's not surprising that the original poster used that word. That's all I meant.
