Crosscut Debuts with Northwest News

Seattle-based Crosscut launched today, offering up original and aggregated Northwest news. The operation is all online, and is a bit Emerald-centric, but provides Oregon- and Portland-specific feeds and links, including a link to OMI. A media story of note: a Seattle Times ex-veep told antitrust investigators the paper sabotaged its jointly operated rival, the P-I. The testimony was given in 2004. Clearly Bill Richards, the story's author and a writer who covered the joint operating agreement for the Times in 2004, has been waiting to report this for quite a while.

The P-I noted the launch, the Times did not -- though they seemed to find it noteworthy when it was still in development. Could it be the Times knew what CC's lead story would be? (Did CC tip them off when getting their denial?)

Yeah..they already hired some rightwing blogging hack to write for them. (Actually--I have no idea if the guy is paid or not--but still)

No lefty that I can find, fyi.

Why do so many outlets do crap like this? It irritates me.

First look at Crosscut tells me a lot, especially on who's in it. David Brewster (co-founder of Crosscut) founded Seattle Weekly, Kimberly Marlowe Hartnett (called the "Oregon Editor") also is an ex-SW writer (as is Roger Sale) and Austin Jenkins is the Olympia reporter for the Northwest News Network. They, plus Bill Richards, provide a great core for Crosscut, I think.

Plus, I believe Knute Berger's "Mossback" column also ran in Seattle Weekly.

There's a lot of good, talented people involved with Crosscut. It's already a good read. If they can cover the whole Northwest (and they're including Washington, Oregon, Idaho and British Columbia, which I also like) and do it well, Crosscut has a great future ahead.

The next few months should be fun to watch.
