NBC News/Cho

NBC News has just become an integral part of the story in the Virginia Tech massacre. story here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18169776/

From strictly a news perspective, NBC News has the biggest exclusive news scoop in years. But given the horrific nature of the crime and the enormous news value, they have issues to discuss.

Should they show only material that has been OKed by authorities or make their own determination on what to show?

Given the enormous interest in the story, do they have an obligation to release any material to other news organizations or keep what they have and let authorities dole out to other news orgs? (which would obviously be a much slower process).

How will they promote the fact that they have this enormous scoop, yet not look like they are exploiting this tragedy?

Discuss.

After watching this sick monster's images appear on television over the last 2 hours of flipping channels, I have a great idea to stick it to NBC and win viewers.

Declare yourself a family friendly station. You can watch us with your kids. We make the right decision so you don't have to change the channel. We will keep you informed but never grant the wish of a mass murderer. We'll tell you about the victims and bring their stories to life. We'll help you work out how to spot a potentially dangerous person but we have decided not to sink to the low of the other stations and show the images the killer wanted us to show.

You'd win me right now. This is sick and I feel sorry for the families of the victims. I don't want my kids to ever see the images of this killer with a gun or knife to his throat.

Stations please stop trying to chase the other stations and grow some round things down there.

I'm sorry to disagree but I think that it should be shown with a warning. I didn't want to watch more than once so the next time it came on I turned it off and watched something else.

If you don't like what is being shown then change the channel. If you don't like what everyone is showing then turn it off and read a book.

It is obvious NBC is taking all the credit by making news outlets credit them for the package they recieved. But, i was watching KGW at 10, and they credited NBC for the video and stuff. That's crazy that NBC is making them do that to their own affiliates if that's why...

Great, give the crazies what they want, publicity.

That is so irresponsible, it is sickening. Showing this garbage serves no purpose other than selling ads and catering to voyeurism. Videos like this are not news- it does not inform, and it does not help the victim's families in any way, shape, or form. If anything, it makes them relive the anguish. While I realize GE, Disney, and NewsCorp are for-profit entities, you'd think they'd have some sort of line they wouldn't cross. Well, apparently not- it's pretty obvious they'd sell meth to toddlers if they thought they could get by with it.

It's a dead cert bet that mentally ill people will have NBC in mind when they're fantasizing about how to make "the world pay attention to them". Way to go, scumbags.

I was surprised that NBC showed as much material as they did and initially, virtually every news organization showed everything NBC News showed.

I think NBC and other news orgs were surprised at the level of backlash and it's now interesting to see how various news orgs are reacting i.e. Fox News will no longer show the materials and CNN and ABC will siginficantly pull back on showing them.

They're not going to air them any more. I don't know about other stations; a quick flip through their websites didn't turn anything up.

Northwest Cable News (another Belo station) has restricted use of pictures to file photos from before the package arrived.

Each time you refresh another victim is given the main spot and featured with an obit.

Very nice, actually.

Let's focus on the positive people of this tragedy instead of giving the shooter exactly what he wanted.

Personally, I think the coverage top to bottom of the VT shooting has grated on me. For some reason, everytime I watch a TV reporter interview someone they come off as fake and insincere. Maybe I am just getting sensitive in my old age.

When I heard about the package and tape, I did what another poster did -- I just stopped watching the TV.

What really made me angry, was the day of the event, I flipped on the radio to see what was going on. Before there was even an accurate body count Lars was going off about how if everyone had a gun, this wouldn't have happened.

Note to Lars: Might want to let the shell casings cool before beating your little wardrum. Using this tragedy to get ratings and put forward a pro-gun agenda is just sickening to me.

I like KXLs news department, but with blowhards like Lars and Michael Savage, I am now in the market for a new radio station too. Sigh.

Please check out Carol Costello @ CNN for totally class, accurate, and moving coverage of the tragedy. I think her reporting is without peer in all this total disaster. All of her interviews made me tear up and she treated her interviewees with such understanding and empathy. What a class act she is. She gets it totally.
