Pamplin Pulls Ross Island Deal, Blames the O

No Ross Island for you!

In a letter delivered to Mayor Tom Potter's office this morning, [Ross Island Sand and Gravel CEO and Portland Trib publisher Robert] Pamplin says he is done talking about donating any of Ross Island to Portland. He says the city has taken too long to respond to his offer and that he never offered to donate the entire island, despite what former Mayor Vera Katz, Commissioner Erik Sten and others recall his aides saying. He also says his family has "been subjected to mean-spirited, untruthful and misleading articles in The Oregonian." ...

Peter Bhatia, executive editor of The Oregonian, said, "With all respect, Dr. Pamplin is engaging in a classic case of shooting the messenger. The paper's reporting on Ross Island has been honest, truthful and in depth."

Didn't Pamplin agree to this donation as a condition for escaping some major pollution fines? Or were his lawyers sharp enough to give him a loophole?

Here's a thought. The Tribune started in Feb. 2001, a month after the original donation. There's nothing like a media war to focus attention on you or your media outlet, even if you're the bad guy.
So, attract attention to the Tribune by it having an opposite view of The O, which you're calling out in your letter to the city.
There's no such thing as bad publicity, especially if you own a publicity machine.

On the day the Trib had their giant front page article (friday), KGW's Randy Neves broke an exclusive report out of city hall that said Pamplin was willing to resume talks.
He's been doing that kind of thing a lot.
Kyle Iboshi is doing the same thing on the court beat for the past year or more.

I think he has good reason not to go along with this deal. It was the port of Portland that put contaminated dirt from one of the digs into the fill and now wants Pamplin to be liable for the pollution. Typical of government to craw-fish away from responsibility.

1. The fill from PoP was contaminated, RISG sued and it was settled out of court. You think RISG walked away from that settlement with nothing?

2. You seem to lump the PoP with the city of Portland as "the government." They are two completely different entities. Why would the city of Portland take on a potentially huge liability created by the PoP and RISG? Now THAT would be bad government.

Two different entities? Let's let the person who constantly explains the difference between KPTV and Fox News to work on that one.

My favorite KXL morning guy wishes he could open his show with "Good Morning from the KXL Radio Studios, high atop Portland, overlooking what is left of Ross Island."

KXL Management (aka Little Timmy) did not think it was funny, so they told him to zip it.

Who says Foxy Republicans have no sense of humor???

Didn't know where to post this. KGW has hired Katherine Cook who starts July 9th. She's an Oregon native. Interned at KOIN. Worked at KDRV in Medford before going to Colorado Springs. Welcome home Katherine!!

Yup, They all drink from the same watering hole. Why should Pamplin carry the blame forever? A little asphalt covering won't last forever. The city wants to flex it's muscle and another turf battle begins. I wish we had a real paper to carry the whole story and not polish someone's.. er... apple.

Randy Neves is both good and smart, but that "scoop" that talks would resume was broken by almost all the local media on Friday, usually on their websites. That's because the development occurred during the day Friday -- not before -- and the Mayor's office informed people who'd been following the story. Not all that exclusive, but hey, whatever.

Atleast KGW went with the updated story (and pays attention to City politics) and was reporting on a big local story...more then I can say about most other "media" outlets in town.

Yeah, The Oregonian, with it's two reporters camped out in a City Hall bureau and countless exclusives, including breaking the news about talks resuming before KGW, doesn't "pay attention to city politics."
Give us a break, Randy ... ooops, I mean, expdx.
