Greg Oden

Thankfully nothing big happened today to interfere with the draft coverage. The thing that I find most interesting is that KGW claims an "exclusive" interview with Oden but I just go done watching a clip of KATU interviewing him.

Yeah, KATU had him first on live TV.

The thing that irked me tonight was having Tracy Barry host the KGW sports special. Bad choice. They should have hsd Adam B. do it.

Since Tracy was hosting I'm just going to assume that they sent Adam B to NYC just like K2 sent Katy Brown.

No. They sent Joe Donlon.....don't know why they didn't send Adam. In fact, Adam was on air at all yesterday.

BTW, KATU senr Steve Dunn along with Katy Brown to NY for who knows why....

KATU totally kicked butt... they had him first all the way!

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Thu, 06/28/2007 - 11:15pm.

KATU got Oden first because they're part of the ABC/ESPN family. Basically they fell ass backwards into getting the interview. I guarantee KGW's ratings will still be double, if not triple KATU's from 4:30 on.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Fri, 06/29/2007 - 8:41am.

Yes, KATU lost in the ratings to KGW yesterday - and also to KOIN, who covered it from Portland. "A" for effort, but no results.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Thu, 06/28/2007 - 10:58pm.

This would not be the first and it will likely not be the last time KGW generously grants itself "exclusivity" on stories. Anyone in Portland TV news knows they are about the worst when it comes to claiming something is ONLY ON 8 when at least one other station in town has the same story.
How does management at KGW live with themselves when they blatantly lie like that? They'll be first on the horn to correct others about an erroneous "exclusive" claim, but nonchalantly dismiss the matter when they're the ones in the wrong.
Lame. Lame. Lame.

Submitted by rfaaberg on Thu, 06/28/2007 - 11:35pm.

In my experience, they all do it - CBS, FOX, NBC, ABC, MSNBC, KGW, KATU, KOIN (if KOIN does interviews; don't know) and all the others.

It's "exclusive" in the (misguided) sense that *their* interview only appears on "their air". It's all a thinly-veiled lie, and that's pretty much America these days, btw.

And, I'm not cynical. ;-)

Viewer Rick

Ps. Hope that's not too much punctuation for you all. :-)

Wha, wha what? I'd really like to hear from a G-dub honk and have them explain what they think "EXCLUSIVE" means. btw, Oden invited Katy and Steve to fly back to Portland on Paul Allens private jet... did he invite Joe? I don't think so. Too bad the Blazers brass had to quickly backpedal Odens offer because of "space". Can you imagine THAT exclusive? K2 the ONLY media outlet to fly home with Portlands new superstar! Somehow I think KGW would have spun it into an exclusive for them.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Fri, 06/29/2007 - 1:35pm.

Pretty sure Oden doesn't get to invite whoever he want on Allen's plane. They were never "really" invited. They couldn't go because of "space" you say. Both Allen's planes can carry the entire Seahawks team, and staff. So that's like 80 people plus. So space was not an issue. More like they were not welcome on board.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Sat, 06/30/2007 - 6:26am.

Oden made the offer to Katy and Steve while leaving the Draft Night party. Quote "You guy's going home tonight? Wanna ride with me?" The Blazer "handler" had to politely deny the request because of the size of the plane sent by Paul Allen, it was NOT the 707 used by the team during the season. I'm sure they would have been welcomed on board if it had been.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Tue, 07/03/2007 - 6:30pm.

PA doesn't have a 707, he uses a 757 for the Seachickens and the Blazers. He had two of them at one time, but I believe he's sold one of them.

Submitted by Myhousemf on Fri, 06/29/2007 - 4:02pm.

Did Katy and Steve accept the offer?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Fri, 06/29/2007 - 7:35am.

Even national outlets claim an exclusive interview, even if the person was interviewed by someone else the day before. It is a stupid trick to imply that only you have the story. It's the same thing with breaking news. Why claim breaking news when you're an hour late to the story. Because it's the first you've heard of it. They are all cheap tricks.

I was watching Oprah (yes take my man card) and all of sudden it just stopped and jumped into the NEWS 8 special. They couldn't wait for a commercial break? I mean nothing happened from 4:30 to 5 p.m. except for them covering the same ground that has been covered for the past few weeks.

Other than that, I watched ESPN because they had the Draft War Room video from Paul Allen's undisclosed location.

The Randolf trade makes me want to become a Blazer fan again -- even looked at season tickets. Now to convince the wife. :)

Nothing happened from 4:30 to 5:00? The draft pick was announced at 4:37.. and you had 7,000 people at the Rose Garden storm the court in excitement. I'd make the argument that the 4:30-5:00 half hour had more happening than any other time period.

2. Can't read a clock. (ouch again)

It just startled me, I thought they would wait for a commercial break.

Good to see the Blazers getting back to old form.

They didn't do squat...huge story--sports or not--- and they dropped the ball like a steel anvil from the top of the empire state building.
What the heck are they thinking...or not thinking-- over there?!?
Did they just give up on sports afteer Becker left? Like it or not, KPTV, people are starting to care again about the Blazers; I've bumped into more people the last few weeks who say they hated the team, but have done a complete 180.
Better buy a ticket fast, KPTV, because the train is leaving the station without you !
Better yet...go ahead and hesitate; It'll help the rest of us out in a big way.

Submitted by bigboy on Fri, 06/29/2007 - 5:41pm.

KPTV was MIA on the story everyone's talking about. The Blazers even "stole" the first pick in the draft so KPTV could have used their usual crime vernacular.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Fri, 06/29/2007 - 6:10pm.

Sorry folks, wrong again about KPTV. The night before the draft, the LEAD on the 10 O'Clock News was about Oden being selected number one(ESPN.com broke the story)KPTV had the Blazers denial, etc. KGW's 10 never mentioned it. Instead, they followed KPTV's lead and finally mentioned it in their 11, and so did KATU.
KPTV didn't feel it necessary to send their NEWS anchor across the country to cover a sports story. KPTV was at the Rose Garden, and gave the draft plenty of coverage. By 10 pm, it was an A block live shot/package, just not the lead. I don't see anything wrong with that. KPTV doesn't follow the pack, and their numbers prove people appreciate it. The 10 O'Clock was number one late night by a HUGE margin. Even their 11 tied KGW's for first place in that time slot. So, maybe KPTV is doing something right?

It's statements like the one above that prove the ignorance of a KPTV'er-- Mr. ND, is that you?--
This whole debate about KPTV dropping the ball IS NOT ABOUT IMMEDIATE DIVIDENDS--AKA---OVERNIGHT RATINGS!!!!!
It's about choosing or not choosing to commit to a story and/or trend that may or may not pay off in the pocket book; Is it what the viewers want to see? PLAIN AND SIMPLE!!
As for KPTV "not following the pack"... again--- FORGET ABOUT THE OTHER STATIONS!!! Lead, follow, whatever---just think about the viewer, the CUSTOMER.
Did not choosing to go to NY affect KPTV overnight.. HELL NO !!!
But I guarantee you this: The Blazers know who is and isn't on the ship when it sails... and there's nothing like a good 'ol face-to-face sit-down like Katie Brown (and Dunn) had with Greg Oden in NY to pave the way for a positive future rapport with the team's next big star.
At this point, anybody from KPTV is just another media schmuck to the big guy.
Point is, whenever KPTV'ers refer to the overnight ratings to justify their choices, they're proving they have the blinders on tighter than ever; Of course viewers won't make snap decision like.."oh i'll watch KATU and KGW tonight because they're in New York"
..and the ratings showed it. But it's still important to do some things some times, but as usual, KPTV was about the immediate dollar in the ND's pocket.
Kinda like the 50th wedding anniversary for your parents who live 3000 miles away: You can just call them up and say "congrats"... or you can choose to travel---and lose money on the costs---- but you'll be a lot richer for the experience of being there.
I digress !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why all the exclamation points? Oh. A 1.3 on my flagship 11, would do that to me too.

to the big 'Blazers' is more important to you than objectively covering the news. You don't need to send a crew to a location to cover a story well.
I would ask why we don't send reporters and anchors to cover news that affects the majority of our viewers everyday.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Sat, 06/30/2007 - 12:32pm.

Nobody's sucking up to the Blazers... Honestly--it's about doing the right thing. Nothing more.
No, you don't NEED to send a crew anywhere---that's the core of this debate: It's where do you CHOOSE to play your cards for the public's benefit.
As for your question:
"I would ask why we don't send reporters and anchors to cover news that affects the majority of our viewers everyday"..
The answer is that the Blazer draft is not only NOT an every day thing--It's a once every one or two decades thing.
Think, man...think!

This was conclusion to a story that had already ended. Everyone knew Oden was coming to Portland, so why make such a huge deal about something everyone already knew? There are a lot more people who don't like sports - especially in Portland - than those who do. The size of the local sports departments reflect that. Big story? Yes. Send anchors to kiss up to the Blazers who will ignore them in the fall? No. Some of us have been through this before, one good playoff run and the honeymoon is over with the Blazers.

Matt Smith of KPTV did have a sit down interview with Oden, once he was in Portland. I promise you, Oden doesn't care if it was in NYC or Portland. Hell, he probably doesn't care at all about any of these podunk Portland reporters.
Bottom line: KPTV covered the story, and recognized it was important to the city and the viewers to a point. It doesn't mean it warranted non-stop coverage from all angles. It's just basketball, people.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Fri, 06/29/2007 - 6:58pm.

though I'm sure KPTV will take their nearly 9 rating last night (the highest rated news program of the entire day) compared to KGW's 3.8 and KATU's 1.3 at eleven (the only two stations to go to NY). Had they been trounced in the ratings last night they might be rethinking things in Beaverton. But that didn't happen.. yet.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Sun, 07/01/2007 - 12:22am.

when it suits them.. Someone a while back asked Patrick and the Beaverton boys about their 2ND place demos in May.. and guess what? NOBODY responded. That shut them up for a few days anyway. It didn't last long. KPTV should know by now that ratings come and go. You're on top for a while and then you're not... You brag about your morning ratings and throw a big party... and then the demos are released and your sales department has to tell advertisers.. WE'RE #2! Karma's a bitch, ain't it?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Sun, 07/01/2007 - 9:38am.

Was KPTV really #2 in A24-54? The numbers I saw show a tie at 6am, with KPTV winning at 5am by a considerable margin. That sounds like an overall KPTV demo win (and HH win), given the fact A24-54 is widely considered the "key demo".

Besides, going to the "demo argument" is always a sign of desperation. I'm pretty sure KPTV won the demos several times in the past when KGW beat them in HH (which is really the measure for us news folks anyway)

Submitted by pdxtvwatcher on Sun, 07/01/2007 - 10:57am.

I'm not convinced that KGW beat KPTV in the demos.

According to the May 2007 book, for Adults 25-54 (the key demo category), here is what is printed:

5-6am:
KGW - 1
KPTV - 2

6-7am:
KGW - 3
KPTV - 3

Given the above, by what argument is KGW #1?

Regardless, both stations did very well at 6am (but KGW struggled at 5am) -- and each station's Sales department has solid morning numbers to sell.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Mon, 07/02/2007 - 9:48am.

I'd be curious to see the numbers you're referring to. Please post them that shows KGW beat KPTV.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Fri, 06/29/2007 - 7:16pm.

The sports department is a total disaster. They were dead last on the biggest "news" story of the year so far. Patrick really blew it. Just another example of KPTV relying on big lead-ins for their ratings, and not good news judgement. He's really showing his lack of experience.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Fri, 06/29/2007 - 7:43pm.

Say what you want, but they were the number one late night news. #1 show at 10pm, 2nd highest rated show of the day and tied for #1 at 11pm. So much for MIA on the story everyone is talking about.

Submitted by Tv_Viewer on Fri, 06/29/2007 - 6:22pm.

I thought that exclusive meant that you have an interview/story that no one else has. Let me know if that has changed. Stuff like this is what makes people wary of news.

Here is what dictionary.com said Journalism. a piece of news, or the reporting of a piece of news, obtained by a newspaper or other news organization, along with the privilege of using it first.

KATU Wins. Hands down. Forget ratings, KATU knew what the big story of the day was, and covered it. They were smart to have their main sports and news anchors in New York. They even sent Natali to the Rose Garden, and Scott Burridge to Tualatin. While all their crews were tossing to each other, KGW had Dave Northfield showing me what their home page looked like. Like THAT helps me understand the story. Sure, KATU may seldom win the early-evening ratings, but they seem to have their game on more than KGW.

KPTV Who?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Fri, 06/29/2007 - 9:10pm.

Keep winning hands down? Maybe the overkill on a story everyone knew a month ago (that the Blazers would pick Oden) was the reason KGW beat them and they were 7th place at 11! Seinfeld, South Park and Nova are ratings killers. Next staff meeting tell your bosses to forget ratings because you won hands down.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Fri, 06/29/2007 - 9:48pm.

It wasn't even close. It was hard to watch KGW. KATU will dominate the sports scene since Ron Pivo isn't at KGW anymore

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Sat, 06/30/2007 - 9:54am.

that couldn't be further from the truth. They're 11 was very weak, while Donlon had a fresh one on one with Oden, meaning a second newer version, that he fronted off the top of the show. You can't dominate when you're 4th in the ratings. Sorry folks doesn't work that way. People don't like Katy and the numbers show it. KGW is still the sports team to beat, even without Pivo, that's how deep they were. Sports Sunday is still the show to beat, Friday Night Flights dominates in the fall. Its not even close!

Freaking depressing reading this and realizing we've lost sight of the real point of journalism. Big deal that two of the stations spent big money to send people to New York. BIG DEAL. Who's doing a true service to the public? Who's uncovering corruption? Who's investigating wrongdoing and giving voice to the voiceless?

Do any of you ever get tired of bagging on KPTV? Seriously. If the station is not a threat, if the coverage is such a joke, why is Fox 12 always the hottest topic of conversation on this thread? Obviously they're making waves out in Beaverton or has anyone not noticed KATU's change to non-stop crime coverage? Three years ago, every reporter/photographer in town made fun of the stories KPTV covered. Funny how things have quieted down in the field.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Sun, 07/01/2007 - 9:20am.

KGW should be ashamed of itself. That's not an "exclusive"... and they know it. They're using semantics to try and justify a shaky position, but what they don't seem to understand it that they're undermining their own credibility within the industry, and market, by doing so. Viewers are smarter than KGW gives them credit for being. Had they just played this straight, they'd be fine. That's what's silly. By slapping an "exclusive" tag on an interview that anyone/everyone had, only makes them look insecure.

The poster above gets it right.... BIG DEAL. Serve the public. Shed sunshine in dark places. Engage. Stand for something. Geez. But do they really think that viewers are dumb enough to see Oden from Madison Square Garden and see that "Exclusive" and not realize that The Oregonian, Oregonlive.com, KATU and everyone else had Oden as well?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 07/04/2007 - 9:36am.

Honestly, most "sports" people probably didn't even watch any of the local stations. They watched ESPN... last time I checked, they had the first interview with Oden... about 30 seconds after he left the stage.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 07/04/2007 - 2:05pm.

was the top pick in the draft so there's no "exclusive"... PERIOD.

As for Oden asking Katy and Steve on a plane with him, [knock it off with the aspersions.--L].
