Submitted by Myhousemf on Mon, 07/09/2007 - 5:51pm.

KUNP run out of KATU will be starting its spanish newscast tonight at 6. It will be daily at 6 and 11. It's anchored by someone in Seattle and someone in Portland.

(btw Lynn, KUNP isn't available in the "Outlets" options.)

I did not catch the 6pm, but I'm excited to see what the 11pm has in store, even though I can't understand much of the language. since it runs at 11, does the control room run out of Seattle? I also wonder if their going to have a whole branding of news crews out in the city? getting this spanish outlet reallys makes the Portland market feel BIG!

Fisher really did the right thing here. They could have easily run KATU's product with translation, but instead a small crew was hired to pave their own way. They'll have access to all of the KATU resources, but they also will have thieir people on the streets as well. Interesting how they tie Seattle into it, but that's OK. There are tens of thoudsands spanish speaking folks in the area, and Fisher now has a product for the KUNP sales team to push.

Are you nuts? How about NO Spanish language broadcast at all. This was created to serve the illegal alien population and I really don't want them catered to.

Is someone saying they DO they run their control out of Seattle? I'm sure KOMO has the facilities, but they, too have an 11pm (and 6pm) newscast.

The show is a joke. The Portland anchor is horrible. It's REALLY bad! I bet it won't last.

--a network entertainment programmer? The show's been on like a week.

What if millions of Russians (white) were somehow making it illegally into the USA, and a local TV station decided to start a Russian language newscast? If I thought it was a wacky idea and people should learn the language of the nation they live in, does that make me racist? I don't think so.

I wouldn't be happy if we had 200,000 illegal Canadians here and they were starting a French language broadcast. I hate how easily some people throw the word racist around. I wonder if the person saying racist realizes that Lou Dobbs' wife is from Mexico?

Maybe the equating of "Spanish speaker" to "lawbreaker" is what is racist.

...are even immigrants. But then, I grew up in Southern California.

But a jerk none-the-less. What about all the LEGAL, english speaking hispanic members of our community who just want to watch the local news in their native language? The Spanish speaking population in our state is growing, wouldn't we like them to actually understand what's going on around them? I am an average, run-of-the-mill white, native Oregonian who also doesn't like illegal immigrants any more than the next person, but I've been on the flip side - in a foreign country desperate to just understand what was happening outside. I say give it a chance and let's see what they can do.

...than "illegal immigrants must be watching it." Because the arguments you're using have all been used before against immigrant minority populations.

Catholic schools, Yiddish newspapers, Chinatowns--they were all anti-American dens of iniquity where lazy, disease-harboring immigrants who got here who-knows-how spurned their new nation's tongue and culture, refusing to assimilate.

Those arguments were made less than a hundred years ago. And yet arguing that those institutions are "anti-American" today would make you look pretty damn stupid.

I wonder how these current arguments are going to look a hundred years from now?

People need to remove their emotions from this debate.

The same people who would angrily argue this newscast is catering to illegals would likely also say that capitalism is the best economic system.

Guess what people, this is capitalism at work. There is an underserved population, there is profit to be made and there is a company (Fisher) willing to put out a product to serve that population. Pure and simple.

Yes, and your point? Dobbs is not a racist. Lou Dobbs articulates the issue in an intelligent discourse, unlike statements from Larson, Lars make the pointy-headed "point" about KATU "catering" to illegals... Pleae articulate what free broadcasting does to "cater" to illegals, unless you are willing to infer that all or most Hispanic viewers are illegal, or should be suspected as such. Some of these arguments all boil down to the guy I saw wearing a Tshirt in Home Depot the other day, big American flag on the front with the statement, "speak English or get the **** out.." Nice. That's what the forefathers intended.

Nope. What he is saying is simple: illegal immigration is illegal. I really don't understand why that is so hard. If you come here illegally then you are breaking the law. Period. It doesn't matter what country you come from or the color of your skin.

BTW:Lars Larson is an idiot. I love what K2 did in response to him.
