Cowherd getting promoted?

Submitted by bigboy on Wed, 07/18/2007 - 3:51pm.

The O's John Canzano blogs today that ESPN has talked to former Portland sports personality Colin Cowherd about replacing Dan Patrick (who is leaving ESPN in August) on ESPN Radio's flagship afternoon radio show.

Canzano thinks it's Cowherd's gig if he wants it. There are certainly less controversial choices. You may remember Cowherd got into some trouble for encouraging his listeners to crash a blog a few months back.

Personally I think there are better choices. Cowherd is decent, but there is a big drop-off from the gravitas and credibility that Patrick brought to the show. Also, Cowherd's abrasive, frenetic style is vastly different from Patrick's easy-going manner.

I liked him when he was here in town (was it KGW)?

After listening to him on the radio in the mornings -- and his antics with using bloggers material without giving them credit and crashing The Big Lead -- I have found myself ignoring his program, opting to leave the radio off.

Frankly, I like Dan Patrick, and if Cowherd is going to replace him, my radio will be off in the afternoons now.

See, the way this blog thingy works is you only comment on topics that you are interested in or have something to add.

So what does ESPN management do, give the show to an television personality like Mike Tirico, that has never done radio, and watch the show die and slow painful death?
Or give it to the guy who's been doing a show on your network for three and a half years, has been in radio for 10 years, and who's ratings are growing every quarter? Seems like a no brainer, but that's just my opinion.

I think Mike and Mike would be better in that slot. Hell, Scott Van Pelt filled in the other day and I thought HE was better than Cowherd.

Actually Mike has done plenty of radio and would be the best out there. He was better as a freshment in college than the stuff on the major nets.

Cowherd's show isn't what it was at first, but I think his divorce has had something to do with that. I think it would be good for The Fan. But for the most part all of ESPN Radio sounds the same, the same guests (Gammons, Olney, Clayton, Bucher) and the same tone. Patrick was at his best when Olbermann came on with him.

When did Colin get divorced? I don't remember hearing about that at all.

"Because women and men are so different. Don'cha think? Men are all, 'Let's watch the game and grunt.' Women are all, 'Let's go shopping.' Don'cha think? That reminds me of bloggers. Don'cha just hate bloggers? You know what they are? Nerds. Nerds are different than you and I. Nerds are like, 'Let's do a blog.' You and I are like, 'Let's watch sports and not read blogs.'"

Colin Cowherd, what a horrible radio presence

I flip over when Hartmann goes into commercials, cos I like the Spanning the Globe feature. But that's all I like. Cowherd sounds like the result of a drunken night between Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck. I too like Patrick and will follow him to XM or Sirius or wherever. I won't listen to Cowherd at midday.

One thing to like about Cowherd if you are not TOTALLY into sports, is he seems to bring it around to issues that, while relate to sports, are no exclusive. He talks about general issues, (with a sports focus), better than most sport-jockeys. As moderate sports fan, I appreciate NOT hearing stats and numbers all the time. Sports is so much more than the numbers, and Cowherd seems to realize that.

i think Jim Rome is the king, but Cowherd is good. I did not like Dan Patrick... he sounded bored and it made me bored.

I would vote for CC to take the spot.

Who is better? I worked with CC at KGW. He is the real deal, funny, knows sports and really prepares and cares about his show.

If Colin does take that slot over, what happens locally? They tape delay patrick two hours, but only want to air the herd live. Would they add another local show in the mornin? Tape delay rome?

I think I heard or read someplace that Rome doesn't "let" his show be tape delayed any more.

I have suffered through this shock jock, ratings whore longer than I want to admit, but i guess that sort makes me an expert on the subject. While it's true that Colin is a departure from the expected, it is also apparent that he is,fortunately, slotted between two professional brands. My mind goes on standby during his meaningless, self-loathing, "hypocrifull" rants and sophomoric antics in anticipation of the informative, legitimate offerings of real talent. There are many credible voices that The Network could install to fill Dan's shoes, though he will be missed. I personally like Tirico, Lampley and Eisen. All pro's who will not sacrifice their integrity or that of this fine network.

Cowherd is lazy. Neither he nor apparently his producer research topics. The result is shoot-from-the-hip non-journalism that is often inaccurate.
