When phony news gets real

Not local, but of interest to those interested in the "new" media ...

A number of news websites post links to stories on other sites. One is CNN. On their site at this writing (and for the second time this week) is the story, "Facebook founder sued|Facebook's creator is being sued for stealing the idea. What do you think?"

The link, clearly sourced, is to The Onion, which bills itself as "America's Finest News Source" but is a parody site. As this sort of semi-automated electronic gathering grows, I suspect we'll see more and more of this.

CNN has been running satire and humorous pieces from places like The Onion and The Borowitz Report for a while. It's not automation, it's just a sense of humor.

Maybe I've just ignored it in the past, but I was quite surprised to see it just below their top story - the MN bridge collapse.

The story is true, it's the interviews at the link that are phony. And like anonymous at 6:33 pm, it's the placement that surprised me. If it were labeled "humor" and not placed so close to the lead news content, there'd be no big deal (maybe not even a deal of any size.)

Oh... I thought this was a post about Fox News, aKa, "Fox Noise" and "Faux News."

Fake news and nonsensical analysis are the norm on FOX.
