12/49: Ed Williams Departing

Submitted by LynnS on Tue, 08/14/2007 - 12:42pm.

Over the transom I hear that Chief Engineer Ed Williams is leaving the KPDX/KPTV duopoly, and the biz. Williams oversaw the building of 12/49 HQ in Beaverton and the joining of the two stations. More than that I do not know.

I worked with Ed for many years, and he is a great cheif engineer. He did a masterful job when the station moved to Beaverton and more importantly when the duopoly was formed. He is very bright and a good leader. I can't imagine finding anyone more capable than Ed to fill that post. And no, this was not written by Ed Williams !!!!

He also upgraded the news to 16x9*... and he doesn't take any crap. I respect him for that.

Who knows where Ed is headed now? Good luck!

While I never personally met him, he would regularly post on a television "techie" board and was always more than willing to answer questions, field comments and concerns, and pull the curtain back on how the pictures fly through the air...

Good luck to him on his furture endevours!

Working on the news side of things, I can say that Ed has always been willing to go the extra mile. When we're doing a liveshot from a stunt plane or some other tricky location, that's Ed and his team hard at work. And unlike some chief engineers I've worked with, he's actually a likable guy who is fun to talk to. We'll miss you Ed!

Thanks folks. After a little more than 13 years in this market and just a couple of years shy of 30 altogether in mass-media, it wasn't necessarily time to make a change except for the fact that a pretty significant opportunity came my way a couple of months ago and when the final deal was made, it was pretty hard to turn down. My friends in Portland will still see me around. I won't be in "the biz" anymore, but I'll still be living and working here in town - I probably wouldn't have made this move if it required relocation ... in 13 years here, this area has really grown on me.

Thanks again.

What I hear from vendors is you are one of only a few that likes to get the best price (read thrify :). I do wish you the best however, this is a small community television engineering hopefully we will chat again.

I worked with Ed many years ago and remembered him telling former GM Cary Jones, when asked to fix something big, he replyed, "Cary, do you want it done FAST, CHEAP or GOOD.................pick two ?

Thanks for making the merger between 12 and 49 a smooth one for all involved. And for helping Good Day Lifestyles (while it was on the air) look so good for this lowly producer...

Congratulations Ed! Best of luck in whatever you're going to do! I appreciated your "cowcatcher" way of getting things done. No Bull, clear the tracks and git er' done, with only a few cows on the side of the tracks wondering "what the heck just happened"!
