OPB: Ira Glass at New Hope Church? Not So Much, Say Fans (Updated and Bumped)

Submitted by LynnS on Thu, 08/30/2007 - 2:43pm.

Ira Glass, host of the much-lauded "This American Life," is coming to Portland for a fundraiser for OPB. Sounds great, right?

Well, the folks at OPB insist that the only place big enough to host it is...New Hope Community Church, bastion of anti-gay sentiment and political activism. OPB is paying the church rent of $8,000 $1700. Rather ironic considering that one of the authors launched on This American Life" is the very gay and very funny David Sedaris--the show regularly deals with gay issues. More from the Merc, which has emails between OPB and former Basic Rights Oregon honcho Roey Thorpe and the latest from Glass's agent: He's asked for another venue.

[corrected rent amount. Thanks, John.--L]

Update: OPB VP Tom Doggett says the event is staying put.

Update 2, from comments: Apparently Mr. Doggett was overridden; it's moved to the Convention Center.

More later when I have a chance to catch up, but the fee for the new hope church was $1,700 (not that the amount is the issue).

I couldn't even tell you where I got that figure!

I love that Ira Glass would take his message of tolerance and listening into a sanctuary of bigotry.

New Hope's ilk are the ones who should be upset!

I don't see the problem with him appearing at New Hope Church. Yes, I know what they have said and yes he has asked for another venue.

But wouldn't the ultimate revenge be to raise a bunch of money.

Why penalize OPB for someone else's views that just smacks of censorship.

Not giving someone money is not censorship.

It's not about someone else's views. This is a church that is actively pursuing discrimination: one that has a history of doing so and currently is doing so. THAT is the issue. It's not about revenge, it's about having an event where the public, all of the public, is welcome to come. And at New Hope, they are all certainly not welcome.

If OPB hangs tough on this one, they'll be making a very clear statement that they don't need or want my money. Ever again.

Or maybe they can hold out for a better offer from Scientology!

I call for a boycott of OPB. We might as well be donating to Lars Larson.

This is the most ignorant and short-sighted statement I've seen all day.

The venue has changed to the Oregon Convention Center:

Lynn -

It's uncalled for to make the snarky comment about Tom Doggit. He has nothing to do with this event other than being the unlucky person the Oregonian called at 7:30pm on Wednesday night. His reply to questions about the event was along the lines of "What's it say on our website? That's as much as I know"

Seriously, I'm not that subtle with the snark. That was a pretty snark-free post. The headline in the O was, "OPB stands by church choice for Ira Glass appearance," and Doggett was the quoted spokesman. If he wasn't the guy who made the call, well, that's not clear from the O's piece. If I had wanted to smack someone down, you'd know it.

So let's ask this question, then, since you brought it up: If Doggett didn't make the call either way, who did? Whose brilliant idea was this?

Hey John - it's good to defend your boss- but learn how to spell his name is a good idea too. Having known Tom for many years - he's got a lot of power there, and very little sneaks by without him knowing or being part of it. Here's some snark - I wouldn't be surprised if he wanted it at New Hope. Years ago, he was responsible for a lot of censuring of gay programming. And that's the truth.

It's interesting John is making official comments here. My understanding is that OPB doesn't respond to the blogosphpere hype, or at least that's what you say. I guess you just pick and choose what blogs you will post on? Interesting.

Seriously, I am glad he chooses to post here. I also don't think he's posting in an official capacity.

ETA: And another thought for you. John is brave enough to post with his real name, on an actual account where you can track what he's said. How many of you here do that? I'll tell you how many, like five--including me. That deserves a little respect.
