Pivo Surfaces at KEZI (Updated)

Submitted by LynnS on Sun, 09/02/2007 - 9:30am.

I meant to post this yesterday but the day just got away from me, sorry guys.

Former KGW sports director Ron Pivo has finally surfaced again: At KEZI/Oregon Sports Network, where he spent yesterday as the "color man" for Oregon games opposite Sam Adams.

Update from the man himself:

Just to be accurate... I was asked to be the analyst for the Ducks pre and post game shows for the Oregon Sports Network which KEZI has the rights to.

I have not moved to Eugene.

I will just be making the drive down there to do these shows.

Thank goodness for satellite radio.

RP

And the rumor about possible other employment that was posted here he says is untrue. That's why I deleted a couple of earlier posts.

What happened to the posts here? Does that mean they were incorrect?

Is this sort of a homecoming for him? (not to imply that a return to Eugene is a good thing)

Submitted by LynnS on Mon, 09/03/2007 - 7:03pm.

And I was asked to delete them, so I did.

Who posted what and who asked for the posts to be deleted?

This reeks of censorship, at minimum. Shame, if so.

Pivo has returned to Eugene...He at one time worked at KMTR

I guess someone out there has a really, really thin skin.

They were factually inaccurate.

You routinely disappear posts that you feel are not factual?

Wow, that may be disappointing...

I had it from an extremely reliable source, namely Ron Pivo.

Bad move.

Post corrections. Don't censor posts.

Wow

Now I worry about the credibility around here. :-(

Someone is a little paranoid and worried about freedom of speech.

Remember, this is a privately owned forum. Freedom of speech is owned by the owner of this blog. If you don't like it, I say tough.

Lynn does a great job on this forum, and if something is proven factually inaccurate, why leave the lie to begin with. Quit creating the lies if you want the posts to stay =P

Submitted by Anonymous Source on Tue, 09/04/2007 - 7:43am.

While Lynn can do whatever she wants, I don't think deleting them was a good move IMO. I'm sure there have been numerous other times where comments were factually inaccurate, but somehow those weren't deleted. A correction would have sufficed.

Submitted by Anonymous Source on Mon, 09/03/2007 - 11:33pm.

YES! Pivo is back! Good to see him on air again.

Removing, rather than correcting, posts that are "factually incorrect" according to the person they were posted about is that dreaded slippery slope. It does smack of cronyism and spin control.

Lynn might want to consider changing her name to the "Rove"ing Fairy Blogmother.

Submitted by Anonymous Source on Tue, 09/04/2007 - 11:17am.

Given what the word censor means, I think Lynn made the right choice to remove the posts. It's one thing if you make an error or a mistake in a story, or a post - but if the entire thing is completely incorrect, there's no reason to leave it out there. That's how rumors start. Unfortunately, not everyone reads between the lines.

Submitted by LynnS on Tue, 09/04/2007 - 11:41am.

Right after I nuked the inaccurate posts I thought to myself, "You know, you should probably have just run a correction." (Too late!) But Ron himself--who I don't know, who I've never worked with and who wouldn't know me if he bumped into me in the street--asked me to and when someone asks me to delete information that is factually inaccurate, I consider it a lot more seriously than if someone asks me to delete something that they just don't like (as if--just ask the management at KOIN).

I can't bring back the posts themselves, but in essence they said the following:

Ron has moved to Eugene.

Ron will be working for Comcast Sports Net.

Ron himself told me neither is true, and that's about the best source I can think of. At the time I remember thinking, this guy is still looking for a gig, and maybe if rumors that he's got one or has left the market start, it could hurt his job search.

Note that this is different from posts that say stuff like "Joe Dokes sucks," because if a management guy takes an anonymous post on some blog that says "Joe Dokes sucks" seriously when he's Googling a job candidate, Joe Dokes doesn't wanna work there anyway.

You're right, I probably should have run a correction instead of a deletion. That is my usual habit. You can see dozens of posts here where I've left up *my own* mistakes--the stuff I REALLY want to take down because I HATE being wrong--with either a cross-out and correction or an update with more accurate information. I try to be very transparent about corrections, especially of my own writing. I fell short here.

And another thing: Had the two people who posted inaccurate--though not malicious--information SIGNED THEIR NAMES, I would never have deleted them, ever. I don't delete account posts unless there's something really grievous, as in libelous, in them. And so far that hasn't happened that I recall because people have more sense than to post stuff like that from a recognized account.

The person who equated me with Karl Rove: Them's fightin words, buster. I demand lattes at 3 paces. Get in touch with me and we'll go for coffee, dutch treat. You can then decide how Rovian I am, which is to say, not very. You can come too, Rick, even though you didn't call me names. You just questioned my credibility. ;)

Lynn

I agree with you 100%. You run this blog therefore you make the calls. If someone doesn't like the calls that you make they are free to start a blog where they allow rumors and untrue stuff to stay up.

In my humble opinion: what you did was right and you don't have anything to apologize for.

I wonder what Pivo meant by "thank goodness for satellite radio"?

I actually saw him on Saturday, he did a nice job on the pre and postgame shows. He does know his sports, and projects well on TV. I wasn't as impressed when he did some sportstalk radio.

Submitted by mfrk on Tue, 09/04/2007 - 3:59pm.

It means he'll have something to do in the car ride.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Tue, 09/04/2007 - 5:59pm.

Yeah, if it's factually incorrect, and Pivo has the real word, I think it's all fair to delete the old posts.

Anyways, the more important issue is actually that PIVO IS BACK! Hopefully he enjoys his time doing the damn thang for OSN. Let's just see if the Ducks actually do well in football this year... :(

Submitted by rfaaberg on Wed, 09/05/2007 - 1:13am.

If the 'factually incorrect' post simply disappears, folks who viewed the post before it disappeared will only have the memory of that post.

On the other hand, if the errant post is left up and is followed by the corrected info, then we have closure.

Seems simple and doesn't restrain free speech. :-)

Ps. I agree about the 'Joe Blow sucks' posts. Hard to believe anybody posts that stuff here, but if anybody does so - vaporize them! (the messages)

Submitted by LynnS on Wed, 09/05/2007 - 9:56am.

I would vaporize all posts critical of ME, including much of this thread. None of the anonymous critical types have taken me up on the latte. Not so much for calling names face to face, I suppose, which would explain the "anonymous." ;)

This topic is kind of buried now I don't think I'll get many replies.

Does anyone know however the staff of the new Comcast SportsNet Portland or any of its schedule? I know its scheduled to launch in October, but here's to hoping people like Pivo, Whelan, Tim Becker and others land on their feet there.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Sat, 09/08/2007 - 7:36pm.

Pivo was up for a job at Comcast but wasn't hired. The Blazers have hired a new studio host for TV pre and post and a new sideline gal for the TV games. I think she comes from Sacramento. Ed Whalen should just retire and KPTV made a bad mistake by letting Becker go. Matt Smith isn't good, in fact he is horrible. Rumor has it that he tried out for the morning sports anchor job at KXL and didn't get it. Bob Akamian will slide into that roll shortly.

Submitted by Tv_Viewer on Sat, 09/08/2007 - 8:40pm.

I don't like to say anything negative about people when I don't work in the industry but Matt is a 100% better than Kara. For some reason she just rubs me the wrong way especially when she does sports. I think that it is interesting that she is listed on the Good Day Oregon portion of the page and also reports for Better.

"Rumor has it." What a joke. Don't believe all the rumors you hear. Or the ones you make up for that matter.
