Eugene TV-A-Go-Go!

Submitted by LynnS on Thu, 09/13/2007 - 10:23pm.

Down in Skinnerville, things are getting wacky.

First up, I hear that KEZI decided yesterday not to renew morning anchor Kerri Stewart. Stewart will stay until a new anchor can be hired (but who knows when that will be).

Why is this a little wacky? KEZI is rumored to be considering expanding its morning show, though GM Mark Hatfield told employees Tuesday that wasn't so. Nevertheless, folks are prepping for sweeps, and the timing seems off.

And speaking of morning anchors, a lot of you have wondered about the whereabouts of former KEZI morning guy Al Peterson. He's now morning anchor at KVAL, replacing Seth Wayne. Wayne's off to Tucson.

UPDATE: Closed thread. Jeez, you guys.

He does a FANTASTIC job! I'm surprised KATU didn't gobble him up when he was filling-in!

This is very sad news. I think Kerri is the best thing going for that station and very fun to watch! I hope she comes out ok.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Fri, 09/14/2007 - 6:51am.

KEZI fully plans to start their morning news at 5AM. If Hatfield says no it can only be that he's not telling the truth (said politely) or they're postponing because Kerri's leaving.

Congratulations to Kerri, Al, and Seth. Kerri's the only thing that holds that AM show together and the only bright spot in the suddenly dismal KEZI offerings.

The KEZI meatgrinder continues to spin...

It's good to see that Al will be back, but I'm sorry to see Seth go. He seemed to have that same sort of folksy manner, sort of a junior Al Peterson.

Surprise, surprise, surprise! That station is losing credibility in Eugene, and fast! Management's pride and ego are so inflated they're blinded by their own incompentencies. They treat people like crap, expect more work from fewer people, and have poured so much money into KOHD in Bend, there's nothing left over for KEZI.

If managment were smart they would do a newsroom survey to see what people really think. Ask real questions, and get feedback. Of course, I'm living in a dream world because that would never happen! I've seen so many instances where we were asked to give an opinion, but managment never listened! Everyone is afraid to speak their mind, and we know that if we do it won't matter anyway. (And I'm not talking about just moaning and complaining about everything; I'm talking about real ideas and solutions to improve morale, and how the newsroom operates.)

KMTR has been the 3rd station in town for years, but that's changing. KEZI is the ONLY station with such mass turnover (and it's only happened within the last two years). That says a heck of a lot about what's going on there. Until management is willing to look in the mirror and admit to their mistakes, nothing will change.

I read that KVAL is looking for reporters....maybe Kerri would end up there. I bet the working conditions are better.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Fri, 09/14/2007 - 2:56pm.

KEZI escorted Kerri out today even though they'd agreed to let her work until her replacement was hired.

Single mom stood her ground and was tossed out into the cold.

KEZI managers: I know you read this. Have you forgotten your humanity entirely? Did you never learn the golden rule? Can't you reach an impasse and still resist the urge to jam a figurative knife in someone's belly and twist it? It isn't just your good names you're hurting but also your ability to attract business.

More importantly to Caroline, Liz, Silva, Bill and Clark: Your good name---one that took decades to build---is being destroyed. Destroyed! All the goodwill from your family's benevolence is being undermined by a poorly run, vindictive wing of the family enterprise. The Chambers name is getting torn to shreds with each heartless, senseless decision. Please don't let it be sullied any further.

As for Kerri, you're a great person and a great talent. Let's hope this is the last straw and that Caroline steps back in.

It's spelled Carolyn.

Kerri can always get a gig being the spokesperson for Bi-Mart. Oh wait, former KEZI morning anchor Erin Bruce took that gig. How about a hair salon? Just go hook up with Al and reclaim your a.m. ratings crown.

Submitted by Beckham (not verified) on Fri, 09/14/2007 - 8:47pm.

Yeah well, about KMTR being third and that "changing," honestly, I don't think it will. KMTR has great talent, hard workers but...they aren't running the news room. Clear Channel is, at least for now. Plus, last I heard, their news director won't fight for them.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Sat, 09/15/2007 - 5:13am.

I wish Chambers Co. could realize they need experienced workers to make quality newscasts. Godspeed, Kerri, we'll miss you.

Good for Seth! I worked with him at KATU, and for the short while he was here, he impressed a lot of people. Too bad he couldn't get hired up here! He has to be one of the nicest people to work with. Sucks for KVAL, but great for his new station in Tucson.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Sat, 09/15/2007 - 10:30pm.

KATU could give a damn about Seth, or anyone else at their "sister station" in the Euge. Seth filled in for both KATU and KOMO, and neither was willing to hire him full-time. I guess he was only good enough for their air when it suited them. So much for the "Fisher Family" I guess. Seth is awesome, and he's better off getting out of here. Good luck!

I went to school with a Kerri Stewart.

Anyone have a picture floating around out there?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Sat, 09/15/2007 - 9:33pm.

She went to high school in Reedsport if that helps.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Sat, 09/15/2007 - 7:32pm.

Her profile sure did disappear fast from the website.....KEZI just need to shut down the newsroom. The only good people they have left are Rick Dancer & the guy who co-anchors 11p weeknights. everybody else looks like they are still in high school....time for pretty anchor school, welcome to KEZI

Good riddance to morning editorials and Dutch Bro's plugs. The name of the game is news, not advertising.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Sun, 09/16/2007 - 6:34pm.

OH GOD! THAT'S THE FUNNIEST THING I'VE READ ALL YEAR!

Yeah, KEZI is better off without the shameless Rachel Ray Makeover Edition of Kerri Stewart. She shouldn't have ever been hired in the first place. She was awful, and she only dragged KEZI deeper into the mud.

Honestly, I hate to give KEZI props (I really do!) but getting rid of Al Peterson and Kerri Stewart are the only smart decisions the station has made in the last 10 years!

As for the idiot that claimed "it's against the rules to get rid of single mothers", get your head out of your ass. This is a business. And if a hack like Kerri Stewart is asking for more money than she's worth, it's her own fault she's been let go. She wasn't even worth minimum wage. Hell, she should have paid the Chambers family for letting her be on their station.

Good riddence, Stew. And good luck slinging that Dutch Bros coffee.

Funny, I thought it was ratings. Just where did KEZI's morning show stand in relation to the other two competitors?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Mon, 09/17/2007 - 9:36pm.

Actually, KEZI's show has been tops since the days of Erin Bruce, Marc Toy and Caroline Howe. Then they dumped that team, Al and Kerri came in... ratings were never better. Even with Al gone, they've been number one, consistantly, through the last book.

Actually, this is not true. When Bruce, Toy, and Howe were at the helm, the KEZI morning show was the highest rated newscast in the market (morning, evening, or otherwise.) The numbers remained solid after Kerri and Al took over, but it was believed by management that those were "riding the coat tails" numbers. I have to agree. I heard nothing but complaints from the community after Kerri took over.

What is the deal with so many KVAL people leaving? First Sophie, then Carla Castano and Seth Wayne and then Andy Perterson? That is the biggest wave of change the station has seen in years. What is happening on the hill?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Sun, 09/16/2007 - 9:53pm.

They're all young and want to advance. I don't see this as being any different from a few years back when Whipple, McKim and the other one (the guy who became PR person for the local school district) disappeared in a relatively short period of time.

Submitted by Beckham (not verified) on Mon, 09/17/2007 - 12:24am.

What's happening on the hill is that all of the people that are leaving have been there for a long time! They're all young, talented and certainly not looking to stay in market 120 for the rest of their lives. KVAL isn't going through anything out of the ordinary besides everyone leaving at the same time.

Now as for whoever suggested anything about KEZI just shutting down their newsroom, I would say "too late." The place is already short staffed as it is, so it might as well be considered shut down. As for Rick Dancer and Jack Madison being the only thing holding that place together, I think that's quite an insult to everyone else that works there. Everyone in that newsroom works extremely hard, and still, some of their content continues to shine as the best in the market, particularly on the weekends.

Who's his co-anchor? The Grim Reaper??

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 09/19/2007 - 9:26am.

Why all the personal attacks... Just because Shelley Kurtz is not straight out of school like some of the bimbos anchoring the other news stations does not make her the grim reaper. Grow up! She's a big part of the reson KVAL continues to be number one.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Mon, 09/17/2007 - 2:38am.

You know, I've seen KEZI grow over the years, I still love their ABC affilate programing, but hell, they've lost a lot of damn good reporters to the newsroom over the years and some of those behind the scenes as well.

Kerri and Al were the best part of the morning show's in the area compared to KVAL and KMTR, even tho KMTR brought Marc Mullin's back home from his wherever stint he went a few years ago, before coming back to ducktown. They also lost Jim Brown and Katherine Herr, even tho Katherine is now reporting in Fresno and Jim still writing novels in Mickey D's part of the time.

What's with Carolyn these day's? She used to be horse of the house stepping up for everyone over the years and keeping the best talent around for many years, well guess that fits Rick's billing that he's been around forever, same with John Fischer too!

I say, Carolyn needs to start having a talk with her management staff about the primes of television news and what talent goes with what these days - I'm sure many fans of KEZI would be enormously effected but Kerri's departure of KEZI and I'll tend to bet, they'll get a camp swampy of callers protesting her depature! Geesh, what's the world coming too, these?

Are you f'ing kidding? She's just a stupid news anchor, and not a very good one at that!

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Mon, 09/17/2007 - 8:47am.

Sophie left for Portland, Carla is moving up, she is very good at what she does. Not sure where she is going. Andy from what I have heard is leaving to be able to see his wife more than 2 days a week. He lives somewhere up north. The above mentioned people I think were very pleasent to watch on the air. On a bright side, Al Perterson is joining KVAL sometime in October.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Mon, 09/17/2007 - 10:01am.

Carla Castano is going to Austin, Texas. She is very talented like the rest of the latest wave of people at KVAL leaving to bigger markets. They will all be missed.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Mon, 09/17/2007 - 9:23pm.

Who will she be missed by? Any of the people she's cussed out while out in the field on stories?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Tue, 09/18/2007 - 11:02am.

Who will she be missed by? Word is she's a royal pain out in the field, and cussed out several people she had altercations with--while on assignment. Sounds more like good riddance.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Tue, 09/18/2007 - 10:00pm.

One of the best reporters in the market, if not the best. The only one with any credibility as an investigative reporter, that's for sure. Folks at the other two shops love her to death... when she's not against you on a story!

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Mon, 09/17/2007 - 10:15am.

Sad to see Kerri go, but KVAL still has the best anchors in town!

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Mon, 09/17/2007 - 3:31pm.

Seth, Carla, Sophie and Andy will be missed. KVAL's still getting stronger and KEZI's still getting weaker. The name of the game is RATINGS and ADVERTISING... KEZI can't seem to get either of those done right.

Keep it weak Scott, you're playing right into the rest of the markets hands! We love you and hope Carolyn never replaces you!

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Tue, 09/18/2007 - 3:25pm.

Cussed who out? Lies.
I've worked with Castano out in the field for the last two years and she has NEVER cussed anyone out. The thing is she is agressive and always beats the competition sounds like you are happy she's leaving so she will quit kicking your ass.

I heard she cussed her dermatologist out in a very public setting. 5th Street Market amid a busy lunch crowd, wasn't it?

Carla has never even been to a dermatologist. I think you are confusing her with Melica Johnson who now works at KATU.

Yelling at a dermatologist, I think you heard a rumor concerning Melica Johnson.

Carla Castano will be missed by KVAL. But KMTR and KEZI are happy to see her go, so they can start catching up.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Tue, 09/18/2007 - 7:04pm.

Obviously you have no idea what you are talking about. It was documented, and I'll leave it at that. Not to mention falling out of the ugly tree dressed like something along Burnside.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 09/19/2007 - 12:31am.

Castano is the most professional and polished reporter (non-anchor) in the market and has been for sometime...any of you saying otherwise and that bring on a 4th grade reply on appearance are friggin' slapdicks...the Eugene metro area needs more Carla's and less first time jobbers from the U of O...this isn't Pasco or Bozeman...

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 09/19/2007 - 9:19am.

Really? We are attacking our colleagues on their appearance and dress? KVAL would never allow a reporter to curse people out. It is in all their talent's contracts and if such an incident were documented she would have been released. Now stop gossiping about reporters who scoop you and work on your own journalism skills. Besides, wasn't this blog about Kerri Stewart being escorted out of KEZI?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 09/19/2007 - 11:05am.

Once again, you REALLY don't know what you're talking about. She came within an inch of being 'released' for one of those incidents. Sorry you're not in the loop.

Don't dress like a streetwalker and you won't get treated like one. Maybe a consultant in Austin or wherever the hell she is going will fix that. They won't be able to do anything about that face though. *shudder* Now go edit that Eugene city council vo bite.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 09/19/2007 - 2:22pm.

An inch from being released huh. As I recall I was filling in for her because she was working in Portland at another Fisher station. That makes no sense. No one knows what "incidents" you are talking about. So quit making up stories and go spend some time learning how to write and develop real stories. Obviously you are making things up and jealous she's moving on while you're still working in market 120. Have a nice time covering city council meetings.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 09/19/2007 - 3:26pm.

There's a lot of ugly people on Eugene tv. Why target just a few? There are so many to choose from on every station.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 09/19/2007 - 9:48am.

Speaking of out of the Ugly tree. Maybe you could post a picture of yourself so we can pick it apart and your clothes too.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 09/19/2007 - 9:53am.

Geez people, how attacking can you be? Have some sympathy when people are treated poorly (and however you feel they are on air good/bad) would you like to be tossed out the door like you don't matter? Why can't anyone be supportive of people, no matter what station you work for? Congrats to those who are moving on to bigger and better places, whether it be in TV or not.
Whether you liked her on air or not, Kerri has a ton of fans and she will be missed.
As for Rick 'big ego' Dancer and the late night guy holding KEZI up...are you kidding me? There are many other talented people at that station. Open your eyes.

It's obvious who is doing the trashing on this post. The trashers are in Eugene, they are jealous of those who overshadow them, BITTER at the success of others, frustrated that they are still stuck in this market, were fired, or quit because they couldn't get out.

And what is it with a hardhitting journalist in this town being bashed on for being a tough customer? Your lack of backbone has you very confused and you are unable to identify what is a tough question and what is not. This industry, especially in this town, is severely understaffed in regards to backbone.

Hey ANONYMOUS backbiters, the people you trash on this blog have invariably gone on to bigger and better things. Time to look in the mirror and see how unsuccessful, bitter and jealous you are. We don't have a picture to see where each of you rate in the looks department (and all of you bashers I would say with confidence have an inflated sense of how you look), but we indeed have the the irrefutable written record on this blog transparently chronicling your seething insecurities.

If Dave Chappelle makes a sequel to "The Playa Hater's Ball", you would all be cast. Go and snark no more. cheers
