Way Overdue WWeek Redesign Thread

Apologies to WWeek. They do all this remodeling and get a bunch of weird reaction and I don't say a word about it here.

So: Not fascist. Odd-looking, but not fascist.

Nah, it's pretty bad. The design of the cover? Awesome. But the logo? Horrible beyond belief. Really. Honestly. Bad. Antithesis to media today. Unless bringing back media and control of 1949 was the point, totally missed the bar. Completely.

I had to idea it was Willamette Week when I first saw it online. I had to check twice.

it says "WE"--the second W looks like a artsily tipped-over E.

My reaction was similar to Lynn's - the second "W" (or whatever it is) momentarily made me think of the Enron logo.

No, the logo is not overtly fascist, but it *is* cold, mechanistic and alienating. It communicates nothing of significance (good or bad) to the reader. I can't believe that's the image they want to project for the next several years.

On the plus side, at least they returned to a serif typeface for their articles. Switching to a less-readable sans-serif was the biggest mistake of their last big redesign in 1996 (and one I had thought, naively, they would quickly rectify).

Am I the only person who thinks it looks exactly like the CW's logo?

Very uninviting logo. It reminds me of nothing more than a comb or a rake. Perhaps it could be softened a little bit by making the second W identical to the first one. Still, I think their best strategy - from a business standpoint - would be to admit they made an error in judgment (hey, it happens to all of us) and start over. Sure, that would engender a week or two of ridicule on websites such as this one, but better that than to be saddled with this turkey on their cover every week for years to come.

I could kind of take or leave the new logo, but I am slightly amused by this: http://www.portlandmercury.com/portland/BigArt?category=22124&issue=4353...
Zusman probably shit his pants when he saw it.

How fitting, really, that the new Willamette Week logo so resembles the Waste Management corporate emblem. Need I carry the comparison further?
