KVAL Doings

I'm surprised I haven't heard more from down-valley about all the stuff going on at KVAL. A correspondent tells me that four on-air folks have left the building of late: Reporter Carla Castano; weather reporter Sophie Soong (which we have noted as she's now up here); weather reporter Seth Wayne (last day was Friday); and reporter Andy Peterson:

The big news is that long time news director Deana Reece announced that she is leaving. Her last day will be the 25th. Rumors are flying around the news department that anchor David Walker will be hired as her replacement.

Do keep me informed, KVALers.

I also hear that KVAL debuts new graphics today.

KMTR's news director did some time at KVAL and might be ready to apply for Deana Reece's position. Considering that KMTR has new owners and a hiring freeze it might be time to set sail.

Also, former KVAL N.D. Paul Reiss is still in town. Doubt he'd come back but who knows? Just hope KVAL avoids the "Let me show you little people how it's done" news directors that killed KEZI.

Is the new catchphrase. I can't believe how heavily the CBS eye figures into KVAL's open - isn't the network/affiliate relationship pretty much on its last leg?

Not sure I'm a fan of the color scheme, but at least the texture within the main lower third bar animates. Mind you, the bar itself doesn't animate on like KATU's but it's progress.

Strange that the new logo wasn't incorporated into the lower third more...that bug is way too big and overwhelming. And like the old bug, I see they're still having trouble keying it properly.

...up until last weekend, I recall seeing Sophie Soong's picture in the title banner on KCBY's website.

Anonymous above mentioned the new KVAL chyrons. That warm purple-red-yellow palette seems to be in fashion now...regrettably, KVAL is nowhere near as generous with views of their opening graphics as KATU/KEPR-KIMA are, but the glimpses I've seen (notably the "New @ 11" graphic in the Vanna box) suggest that they are going with the same variety of graphics that the Flag's stations in Idaho and Washington (KIDK, KBCI, KEPR/KIMA) have adopted (and which I went into way too much detail (and which I noted here, amongst other places).

Did I miss the post about Al Petersen returning to the airwaves at KVAL TV? His old station (KEZI) tossed him out a little over a year ago. KVAL continues to build muscle while the other guys, umm... what are the other guys doing to improve?

Oh yea, building big buildings in Bend, or being sold to the higest bidder... NOW I remember.

Eheh.

KEZI's loss is KVAL's gain. Al is doing the weather in the mornings with Shelly at the anchor desk...

Where did Andy Peterson end up?

Seth was there for awhile, where did he go?

Seth left for Arizona and Andy last day is soon. He from what I have heard has not found a job yet. But he commutes each week from up north somewhere.

We haven't seen anymore comment on KEZI really, so I can only assume....yes?

The answer is a resounding "oh hell no."
