Clear Channel (Updated)

Hearing that four FT staff have been laid off at Clear Channel in Portland today. Some wonder if recent KEX resignations will be filled.

Update from Lynn: I hear Todd Tolces was the only air talent among the lay-offs; the other three were behind-the-scenes promotion/support folks.

One was in promotions.

Why would CC fill the spots left vacant when four jumped ship? That must save them a significant amount of cash. CC is not into expenses, especially the "on-air talent" variety. Look for a couple of interns to pick up the slack the full-timers can't handle.

The speed with which AM radio is hemorrhaging listeners (and employees) is one of the biggest and most under-reported industry stories of the past few years. It's not just Clear Channel that's cutting back. Salem appears to have shelved plans to add a daily local talk show on KTRO, while KPAM has eliminated local news entirely after 8 p.m.

I expect that five to ten years from now, AM will barely exist as a commercial medium. Most markets the size of Portland will have maybe one news-talk station and (in major-league sports markets) one sports station. The rest of the AM band will be time-brokered (e.g., foreign language and informercials), college/nonprofit or some other use that is yet unforeseen.

Todd Tolces is a production pro. He can read as fast as any one and still be understood, considering the crap copy he gets from agencies. He is just plain good. Cut staff and paste with interns. Radio is dead. CC has killed it.

You never actually worked with Todd? I did for many years. Not the easiest guy to work with. Tempremental, moody, and not nearly as talented as Bill Stevens.

Sorry he lost a job...but Todd knew that he was on thin ice for a long time.
