Canzano: Settling a Personal Score?

Submitted by bigboy on Sun, 10/28/2007 - 2:38pm.

Interesting new blog entry from John Canzano and it has elicited quite a response. In it, he details an unsavory encounter with Mike Bellotti's (ex, current?) wife Colleen at the Oregon/USC game. He had written a story about the Belotti's son Luke and his two DUIIs and momma Bellotti was hopping mad about the article.

I think the DUII story was probably warranted. But my journalistic instinct tells me the blog entry about the encounter with Colleen Bellotti crosses the line and smacks of using his position as a columnist at the state's largest newspaper to settle a personal score.

Ms. Bellotti came into the press box while he was working and made this very very very public. could have been really ugly thought john handled himself well, and yes I was there and saw the scene. seems like shes the one who made this personal. i think John probably had no choice considering other media witnessed it and were going to obviously report it. who crossed the line here? i'd say Ms. Bellotti, or whatever her title is, did.

First of all, when you commit a crime (or two), it is PUBLIC RECORD. If you don't want to have your family harmed by bad news becoming public, don't do bad things that people like to report on.

Secondly, the first commenter is dead-on: you can't berate someone in a public setting, make a total scene including dubious character moves like swearing up a drunken storm in front of your kids--and not expect it to make the news. Especially when, you know, that public place is a MEDIA ROOM.

Finally, anyone who has dealt with media for more than two seconds knows you can keep a conversation private by courteously requesting it be off-record. One imagines that thought escaped Ms. Bellotti.

Steve has nothing to be ashamed about, and if I were UO I would do ANYTHING I could to keep this quiet before what is likely the biggest week in Duck football history so far.

I'm guessing if Canzano had a dime for every time someone insulted him, he would be a very rich man. It's tempting to lash out in print but he has a different standard as a journalist.

He should have swallowed his pride and risen above the situation.

I think Canzano's blog entry shed a lot of light on the situation. For example - if the coach's boy has an alcohol problem, I think it's pretty obvious from which gene pool he drew the short straw. No one, journalist or not, should have to put up with that kind of verbal abuse. If she is going to pull a stupid stunt like that, in the press box no less, then she deserves to be written-up. I just wish Canzano had done it in the Oregonian. Talk about a higher standard? How about the wife of a highly paid, high profile state employee? What is her responsibility here? She should at least lay-off the sauce if she's going to confront Canzano over something he wrote about her drunk driving son.

The rich aren't above public scrutiny. If it weren't for Canzano this would not have been brought to light, because I don't think a single Eugene media outlet reported on it, did they? Mommy's pissed? Too bad. Quit sleeping around and raise your kids better.
