Being a science fiction fan of long standing, I'm used to the vox populi passing some sort of less-than-respectful judgement on me, my friends, the lifestyle I lead...I'm usually a socially inept loser who blogs from their parent's basement, obsessed with statistics and trivia and delusions of being a spaceship captain.
For the purpose of disclosure, I am blogging from a basement, but it's my basement in my house.
That said, maybe I'm a little sensitive from being endlessly scoffed at, but the idea of someone actually seeing SF fans as intellectually-charged people who know how to have an offbeat, good, clean, smart time excites me. And that's why I have to give mad props to Kristi Turnquist of The Big O and Claire Evans of WW, who wrote two short pieces that demonstrate that they really Get It™ about the smart and eccentric-in-the-good-way sorts of folks who are likely to attend a convention such as the recently-concluded OryCon 29, at the Marriott on SW Naito Parkway this last weekend.
You can read Kristi's article for free for the next 14 days here at The O (after that, it goes behind the pay wall; Claire's article is available here, and is shorter but has links to two flickr albums.
I have, of course, discoursed on my own blog here
.
They both communicate the sense of childlike joy and fun and inspiration that is OryCon's stock in trade. I give the articles thumbs up all around.

Obviously you leave by 8 pm... ;)
