TV Tidbits & Gossip

Submitted by pdxtvwatcher on Wed, 12/26/2007 - 2:47pm.

The holidays are here, and all has been quiet lately on the TV gossip front. But things are about to get interesting in the new year...

KATU - Just announced: After three decades of airing at 6:00pm, KATU will slide ABC World News with Charlie Gibson to 5:30pm beginning January 2nd. This means that KATU's new evening news line-up will feature an hour of news at 6:00pm, mirroring KGW's line-up. The question remains: Will the new 6:00pm newscast be a full hour with one anchor team (like sister station KOMO in Seattle)? Or will the hour be split into two 30-minute newscasts with an anchor switch at 6:30 (like KGW)? Steve Dunn is a lock to anchor regardless, but who sits next to him? Does 5:00pm anchor Natali Marmion, who loses 30 minutes of air-time when the 5:00pm show gets cut in half, stay later to anchor the 6:00pm show? Or does 6:30pm anchor Debora Knapp get the full 6:00pm hour? KATU insiders: do tell!

KOIN - Not much gossip to report from the bunker lately, which is strange given the recent ownership change. We all know how much chatter the last ownership change created, but little has been said this time around. And there have been no noticeable changes to the product or to personnel. How are the new owners? How is the new company's benefit package? Is it better than Montecito's? And how about the new GM? Let's hear it.

KGW - As previously discussed, the big project coming soon from KGW will be the launch of HD newscasts... at least in part. Sort-of. Or not really, depending on who you talk to. Lots of technobabble has been spewed, and it's hard to figure out exactly what kind of HD product KGW will be offering in a month. Anyone care to clarify in "real people" terms?

KPTV - More rumblings of another news expansion coming... this time, into the early-evening time period. Yes, we've heard this rumor for years, but it might actually be true this time. I've heard that the new show COULD be a 5pm or 6pm newscast that would compete against the other three. However, the recent hot gossip is that KPTV might stay away from those crowded hours and launch a traditional newscast early or late (4pm or 7pm) instead. Another rumor is that KPTV might go in a different direction completely and launch a unique evening lifestyle show that focuses on Portland activities, nightlife, dining and entertainment. (Anyone remember PM Magazine?) Come on, FOXers... what will it be? And when?

Does KGW have a new set? It looks different.

They make the set look different.

Submitted by Myhousemf on Wed, 12/26/2007 - 5:15pm.

I don't believe it was like that in the past dew days when they had fill in anchors.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 12/26/2007 - 8:26pm.

They're on a temporary set until the HD debut.

Submitted by Anonymous KGW (not verified) on Thu, 12/27/2007 - 12:38am.

The set you see now and for the next month is the temporary set. The main set is currently getting it's HD "facelift".

Why does the Noon fill in anchor at kgw make every story soooooooo dramatic...

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Sun, 12/30/2007 - 12:25am.

Stephanie Stricklen has been filling in doing the morning and noon news instead of her normal 4:30-7:00 AM anchoring/reporting. Plus she's still doing the research of medical stories and health blog too.

I'd rather see her get excited about the stories than make everything sound boring.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 12/26/2007 - 9:38pm.

First - Ha Ha about the fill-in's. Funny.
My sources say they're working on their new HD set, so that's a temporary set, set-up on another side of the studio.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Thu, 12/27/2007 - 2:11pm.

that current temp set reminds me of the early 80's...gross!

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Thu, 12/27/2007 - 2:48pm.

Here's the poop on KGW's HD:

After KGW goes HD, 70 to 80% of their video will still be low def, "converted" into "high" def though High Def viewers will definitely tell the difference.

But get ready to see every zit and sore on the anchor's faces. Those studio cameras will show us every detail!

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Fri, 12/28/2007 - 9:56pm.

Upconverted SD is similar to what is done on an 'upconverting' DVD player. Is it better than SD? Yeah. Is it High-Def? No.

As for the blemishes, if other markets are any indication, after the main digital signal data rate has been reduced to accomidate the "Weather Plus" channel KGW is running on the other part of the station's digital transmission, data rate shaping from CableCo's (to save bandwidth), airbrushes and camera detail circuits dialed down, unless there's a real dermatology issue no one need worry about frightened children crying out at what appears on thier television set.

There are some folks in the industry that say the 'golden age' of HD may have already passed due to some of the issues noted above. In my own experience I would tend to agree.

Really folks, while KGW's images should look better, it's not that big a freakin' deal...

When will KGW be able to broadcast HD from the field (live hits and packaged video)? Are there more equipment upgrades needed?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 01/02/2008 - 12:23pm.

Yes. You probably won't see HD from the field until all the stations get their equipment upgraded by Nextel. If you want more information on the Nextel 2Ghz relocation project, check out www.2ghzrelocation.com .

They won't do it prior to that point. Why buy your own equipment to get the job done when it's going to be replaced free of charge for you.

I hear KOIN's new owner is flatly refusing to honor the existing photographers' union contract.

That'll probably land them in federal court - IF the union stands up for itself.

Sent to KATU:

Portland?s Magic Snow

All unbidden, unsuspected,
by the weather guys undetected;
our sneaky blanket of Christmas snow
gave kids some fun and parents a glow.

Then not to be outdone by nature
local TV scientists nurture
billion dollar satellites, radar and all to wisely ?cast our next snowfall.

And what to our wondering eyes appears?
Diddley squat! Must be bad for careers
of weather babes and guys and such
to always miss PDX snow by so much.

But locals all smirk and roll eyes at each other.
We know weather scientists just needn?t bother.
The errors are sad, for kid?s maybe tragic.
But we know in Portland, snow happens by magic.

Kinda cool, but the writer must not watch tv as the local weather peeps said nothing more than an inch down low. Guess what, they were right....nothing more than an inch fell down low.

Funny you say that, because I didn't issue a forecast. I guess my non forecast was a bust. Also, TV weather peoples didn't miss this forecast.....

Last I checked you a part of that "FAB 5" thing and that BPA dude posted comments on behalf of you guys. So I assume that included your thoughts as well ;) That was indeed a major bust!

And where did I say TV mets got it wrong? They ALL got it right for once.

I hear KGW is getting the Ignite system in 2008. How do the employees at KGW feel about that?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Fri, 12/28/2007 - 11:18pm.

There has been no mention of ignite from above... but all the component pieces are in place.
It's more a question of when and not if at this point.

Biggest rumblings are about a 4pm newscast. News Director wanted it a while ago, but higher-ups wouldn't budget for it until now. Look for it to launch in March or April 2008. It'll be a one hour newscast from 4-5pm. Wayne and Shauna will likely anchor. One producer, one writer, one and a half editors, one promo producer, one reporter, two photographers (give or take any of that). The format will probably be a hybrid of Good Day Oregon and the 10pm news. But then again, who knows. That show will probably be slapped together three days before it airs.

Other rumblings: the future of Better. One word: ratings. The New York host is getting more and more of the spotlight. Kimberly Maus is being relagated to a few reports each day. The show is awful. And that's not a good thing during a time when AMNW is getting better. This is another "who knows." It'll probably stick around, simply because it's a commercial for Meredith's magazines.

AMNW getting better? I don't think so! What are you watching? AMNW is a joke

a 4 or 4:30pm newscast over the last 15 years and has had trouble getting viewers to watch it.

Somebody out there should be able to run the numbers on that. Does prime access programming make more for a station than a newscast? What kind of audience does something like ET or Access Hollywood draw compared to local news?

Who is home at 4:30 to watch the news, I am lucky if I catch the last 10 minutes of the 6:30 - I would watch a 7:00...

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Mon, 12/31/2007 - 11:42am.

Their 4:30 is doing nicely.

Submitted by fivecook on Tue, 01/01/2008 - 7:18pm.

"Every station"? I've lived in Portland for 31 years and don't remember anyone else (besides KATU) trying an early newscast. I'll make you a two-beer bet that KPTV has never aired a newscast between 4 and 5 weekday afternoons. And probably win on the other stations, too.
I know KOMO in Seattle has an early news (4 to 5pm) anyone know how it does in the ratings?

Late 70's or very early 80's KGW had a 4:30 1/2 hour.
Pete Schulberg anchored. Carolyn Young and John Davis were the reporters. Two photogs. One producer.
Six person staff for the show.
Very low budget. Lasted for about a year.

Submitted by pdxtvwatcher on Wed, 01/02/2008 - 6:49am.

History:

KATU: 4-5pm ("Two at Four") - early/mid 1980s - anchored by Paul Linnman & Margie Boule. Canceled when KATU decided to gamble on a new show called "Oprah".

KGW: 4-5pm ("First at Four") - early 1990s - anchored by Larry Shoop & Kathy Smith; Joe Sottile weather. Canceled due to low ratings (poor demos) and because KGW outbid KATU for Oprah at 4pm.

KOIN: 4-4:30pm - mid/late 1990s - anchored by Shirley Hancock & Mark Hendricks (later Cam Johnson); Jim Little weather. Canceled due to low ratings (poor demos); replaced by Maury Povich.

Presently:

KATU - 4:30-5pm - the show is doing OK. Demos are low; but KATU has nothing else that would do any better.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 01/02/2008 - 9:32am.

KPTV is the ONLY station that hasn't tried a 4PM newscast. Is there enough crime in the early afternoon to fill an entire newscast? Seriously, I'm not slamming KPTV here. Would they do a more traditional newscast with other news or would it be a crime parade from the night before.

did it in the 1990's. KOIN had a 4-4:30pm around 1996. KGW had a 4:30pm for at least 6 months sometime in that decade. KPTV has not had an early evening newscast at least in the last 30 years.

Others must know more about these attempts at early shows.

Well, it's been interesting.
New Vision's vision seems to be that Montecito was on the right track. So they've cut 6 holidays, are messing with the union and kept people in the dark about their plans. The new gm has meetings, but doesn't know anything except he's amazed at how well the station runs without any people. During the last storm the morning meteorologist worked 24 hours, taking naps in the greenroom because we have no backup.
We lost our best producer to Eugene, and our best photographer who just couldn't take the downslide any more. Reporters have to share photographers because there are only 4 daily, producers and reporters are having knock down dragouts in the the newsroom, and the new gm hires an executive assistant.
What vision!
Oh, and he gave out Chia pets at the last meeting.
Morale is great.

I think there are two main reasons why you don't hear of many insider KOIN updates;

1) Those who still work there really don't care anymore

2) Most of the bitter disgruntled ex KOINers who used to bash KOIN on this site on a regular basis are either finally no longer bitter, or they now feel sorry for those still there
