KOIN is the ONLY local news...(open thread)

at 5:30.

A new promo boasting it is the only source for local news at 5:30 is being broadcast as a result of KATU moving World News to 5:30. I'll be interested to see the ratings in a month or so to see the effect.

You can use this as a weekend open thread if you want as well.

[Thanks, I forgot to post one. Cablenut and I had a big date last night and I'm still all swoony. ;) --L]

What a strange decision.
Today, January 6, the Oregonian includes the usual Sunday filler, "Parade" magazine featuring a cover story about a living Benazir Bhutto as "America's Best Hope Against Al Quaeda."

Huh?
She died two weeks ago today!

Now I'm sure Parade is printed in advance. But why include something a full two weeks after your profile subject has been assassinated?

It's bad enough that the O regularly runs daily news stories that are days old.
But a magazine cover story on someone assassinated two full weeks prior?

That's embarrassing.

The Parade is not run by the O... Our local paper in Bend also ran the Bhutto Parade cover, but ran an explanation on the front page of the paper stating that it had already gone to press when she was killed. My question is why didn't PARADE fix it?

Submitted by longtimeviewer on Sun, 01/06/2008 - 8:08pm.

I don't care who runs Parade, it's in my Oregonian. I thought it was a great profile, however, The Oregonian as usual didn't see any obligation to report "news" and let it run with no mention of her death. I applaud the Bend paper, at least they understand the meaning of a newspaper.

Did you not read the "To Our Readers" note on page 2 of the front section of Sunday's Oregonian, which explains the "Parade" story, the events that occured since it was printed, and the decision to publish it?

The facts: always handy to have available to you before you rant.

I'm not sure who runs it, but it's in the Sunday Seattle Times as well.

is published out of NY and appears in 400 papers around the country. They decided to run the story and cover after the death because it was a great story. Check out their site, www.parade.com, for an explanation.

There should at least have been a note explaining that Charade Magazine goes to print early. Maybe someone can pose a question to Walter Scott asking about the gaffe.

On page A2, as well as notes in other sections, the O. explained how it was that Parade featured Benazir Bhutto on the cover and why it decided to go ahead and distribute the issue.

Submitted by pdxnewser on Tue, 01/08/2008 - 9:04am.

The O failed to grasp the impact on its credibility of choosing to run 2-week old news. Its Editor Notes may have run, but they were almost invisible. Nothing called attention to them. (Through graphics or font choices that could easily have been changed.)

The O's not the only one getting hammered. I'll bet they've had lots of complaints. But the O has no public editor any more so we're not likely to hear how big the backlash was.

In Chicago the Trib is on a very public hot seat with their readers' representative writing, "What makes this special is that it deals with the core issue of credibility. The problem, then, is not merely about the number of complaints. Readers expect the paper to be timely and clear about the news articles it presents."

Read the rest here: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/columnists/chi-oped0108mcnultyjan08,1...

The bottom line is, the story was no longer relevant, its headline made no sense and the only reason it ran was because dollars were at stake - sadly, at the expense of journalistic credibility.

Spreaking of impact, what's the word on KOHD?

Be sure what you write is correct before posting smug posts about The Oregonian! The Bhutto interview is still just as poignant now as before her murder...

I'm sorry Frangos have been eliminated. Nordstroms carried them for years and they were such a tasty treat and a chocolaty delight. Sad news but thanks for the update.

I'll always remember the slogan "I'm Frantic For Frangos" and the opera singer lady singing "FRANGOOOOOES"!

Oh well, I guess change is inevitable. And I agree, this is definitely newsworthy. I hope the other stations carry it as well.

Here in Spokane they used to sell Frangos candies at The Crescent. The Crescent morphed into the The Bon and it's now Macys. There are no local stores left from the old days. It's quite sad

I'd love to see my market launch a 4 or 430pm newscast or a 7pm newscast. KHQ at one time had a 430pm newscast that was great, but now we get an hour of Judge Judy. KXLY has had a 4pm newscast back in the 80's and had a 430pm newscast in the early 2000's. KXLY has the perfect spot for a 4pm newscast. It would be right after Rachael Ray and right before Inside Edition. Now we see America's Funniest Home Videos at 4pm. The OLD OLD "AFV" the Bob Saget days. I'd much rather see a 4pm newscast than Bob Saget from the early 1990's.

Hey Shawn,

Are you old enough to remember when The Crescent downtown was the only department store in town to unveil the big Christmas window extravaganza right after Thanksgiving?...just like in "A Christmas Story."

Those were the days...holy crap, I'm only 38 and I sound like Archie Bunker.

I do remember going with my Grandmother to downtown Spokane when I was young. She would take me downtown to see the Christmas decorations at The Crescent. We'd look at The Bon's Angel and usually JC Penney had a display as well. We'd usually eat something at the Newberrys diner and I would get a new Christmas glass. It usually ended with a picture with Santa and then we would both go home very happy. I never felt more loved then at Christmas with Grandma. She passed away in 2005, God how I miss her and those special Christmas trips. Just me and my beloved Grandmother.

But yeah Robert I do remember. I'm not yet 38, but I only have a few years to go to get to 38. Take Care.

That's a great story, it's nice to have memories like that to hold on to, I'm sure they come flooding back every December.

Sounds like we had a parallel childhood around Christmas, my grandma (on my dad's side) and I would do the same exact thing. Hit The Crescent for all the visual goodies...go check out the gigantic "stained glass" angel over at the Bon Marche...then off to Newberry's to get our picture with Santa. I wish I still had some of those pictures, she passed in 1995. Talk about bringing back memories...that big, blue, nicely lit "Newberry's" sign in bold cursive script facing south on Riverside. Loved going downtown during the season, all the energy and hustle & bustle any little boy could ever ask for.

All the best.

I miss the Crescent, also Lipman Wolfe. Also Meier & Frank. I still have my credit card from The Crescent. I run across it occasionally and feel sad--that was a great, great store. Meier & Frank used to be a great store too--before it was sold to (and neglected by) May Company. Lipman Wolfe was an even greater store. Now we have Macy's Uber Alles. I also think I'm sounding like a geezer here, but it sure was more fun to shop 20 years ago than it is now. Sigh.

...were originally at Frederick & Nelson. Think the Bon got 'em after F&N went to that big mezzanine in the sky.

Submitted by Robert on Thu, 01/10/2008 - 11:18am.

That's going way back.

If some one mentions Giant T, Ernst or Skagg's I'm officially going to have a 70's flashback. Whatever happened to those great, old stores? I guess in a sense, they all merged into a massive, one-stop shopping Mecca called Wal-Mart.

Up until a few years ago they still had a Piggly Wiggly in White Center---just south of downtown Seattle.

Submitted by Shawn on Thu, 01/10/2008 - 4:44pm.

I used to go the the Giant T at the Fairwood Shopping Center (North Spokane) to get blue bubble gum without gum pieces ice cream. Giant T didn't have regular scoops, they were round circle scoops. Grandma would get black licorice ice cream. We'd see who's tongue was the bluest or the blackest. Good times.

Sorry Lynn for all the Spokane references. You could start a Spokane Media Insiders??
