A Modest Proposal To Increase KPTV's News Numbers Beyond Their Already-Stratospheric Heights (Open Thread)

A Friday Dance party works pretty well for WKRC-12 in Cincinnati:

C'mon, Wayne, Shauna, you guys ... you know you want to!

From Lynn: This is your weekend open thread. Can't really top this one. :)

How funny, that news director must be so proud. That does look like a fun crew to work with.

I would recommend this to KPTV's weekend team. Kevin, Steph, Julie: I think this is more their style. Shauna and Wayne are cool and talented, but I see this happening on the weekend show.

Anyone watch(ing) the 10 tonight, I think Wayne/Shauna fit each other more better than Wayne/Julie... Maybe it's hard to get used to. I don't know, it's hard seeing Wayne w/out Shauna tonight.

However Julie/Kevin, now that's a very impressive fit. Comfortable to watch, both attractive folks.

Funny stuff, but Jen better take care. If she keeps up that lawnmower move she just might sprain her groove thang. Ouch.

KPTV, I say go one step further..."Karaoke PDX Dance Party." Kralevich is pretty wicked behind the mic...she can bussa rhyme!

Is it just me or is one of the dorkiest things in the world to do is to announce your dance move just before or as you commence the move?

I would so be there for that! I'd crash that party, fo'reals ... I got an ear for the '80s, a wife that will duet with me on "One Night in Bangkok", and little fear.

Whew..."One Night In Bangkok" I can handle. But I draw the line when it comes to any song by Kajagoogoo or A Flock Of Seagulls. Actually, "Space Age Love Song" by The Gulls wasn't too bad. Wasn't great, but it had a sweet beat so I'll give it an 86 just for the danceable factor.

I'm partially serious...an almost seemingly spontaneous, on-air karaoke dance party would put smiles on faces and butts in the seats.

I have, amongst other things The Fixx's "One Thing Leads To Another", "In The Year 2525", and the english version of "Der Kommissar" down cold, and I'm no slouch when it comes to the Partridge Family's "I Think I Love You". Not only that, I know the song "Dragostea din Tei" ... the song that gave birth to "Numa Numa Dance" ... and I know the words. In Romanian.

Quite. Actually, in all seriousness, a bit of inspired irreverence ... not too much ... can make it a kind of appointment TV. If I lived in Cincy, I'd be there for 5:45 am every Friday just to see if the Dance Party would happen.

For those who don't think that a little well-placed humor and "cut-loose" can mix with the news, I give you the early years of ABC's World News Now, and if you like it on wry, NBC News Overnight, circa 1984 (I think it was) ... that's where I developed a major crush on Linda Ellerbee.

Shazbot, you can sing "Dragostea din Tei" in its native tongue? That's what I call multi-talented, m'friend. How about a little "99 Red Balloons" by Nena in German? I had an old girlfriend that sabotaged me with that tune for two years back in HS.

KPTV could take karaoke requests via the interwebs right during the broadcast. It would take away the surprise element of a spontaneous hootenanny, but requests would get the peeps involved. Or maybe a themed karaoke during the weather broadcast..."Love Reign 'O Me" from The Who..."Lightning Strikes" from Aerosmith...and of course..."Stormy Weather" from Peggy Lee.

Yes, and still my multifarious talents go to waste as I am not in demand. The life, she is unfair, no?

Robert wrote:

Actually, I'm working on that one. That's a really fast'n' furious song and, desipite my love of the German language, still a little unattainable. But rest assured I will conquer that one, for the Karaoke Arena of Honor!

Obviously not your soulmate. B-)

My god, man, you're on to something here. Come to that, I found a few clips from the Friday Dance Party on YouNoob, and in one, Bob Herzog dressed as Vegas Elvis and did the traffic like only the King (or one of his impersonators) could.

I wasn't on for a WNN anchor until Thalia Assuras. Now she was my idea of news hottie.

Not WNN, but CNN's Hannah Storm back in the day doing the sports had my full and complete attention. Man, that woman was cute as a pixie...had a great laugh and personality...and was talkin' sports too boot. Yowza.

Yeah, but then Tracy, Joe and Laural would just copy them like always...

To fill in a couple of gaps in the info above ...

The two stars of the little video are Good Morning Cincinnati anchor and traffic dude Bob Herzog. The person I referred to as the 'traffic hottie' on my blog entry on this post is Jen Dalton.

I must make one revision. Jen Dalton, according to her bio at The CinCW (WKRC's 12.2 DT subchannel is thier CW affiliate) does a whole lot, including a regular "Out and About" segment for them.

Of course, I still stand by the part where she's a hottie, but instead of a traffic hottie, kind of an all-around hottie.

This little bit of inspired unsanity is what they do at 5:45 am every Friday morning if there's no traffic problems to report.

I still say KPTV ought to look into this. Andy would positively tear this one up ... I'd bet he'd be so game for this.

Anyone see the article on the front page of the Living section today? Nice one. Too bad they don't put the pictures of the story online.

Is only the main anchor team at KGW learning this or is everyone on air?

Those were some of the most interesting photos I've seen yet. I thought it was kind of funny the way Laural was caught with face in mid-grimace, making it look like the airbrush was firing off too hard.

Coming from an extremely-minor modling background, it's a bit of a jangle to see something I'd use to paint a picture or create a graphic bing used on someone's face, and it's also a think to look at the 'show-biz makeup' part of TV news".

From the Oregonian piece:

"I made a pig," says [Tracy]Barry holding up an outline of a spray-painted porker.
"I need a sippy cup," Barry says

Sweet Chocolate Jesus, when did Ralph Wiggum get the anchor gig...?????

We just found out, officially, that FOX-12 will begin a one hour newscast from 4pm-5pm weekdays. This will begin on March 3rd. So we'll join the other stations in having an early (very early) evening newscast. We'll also be adding a 5pm Saturday show. That means the First, Live, Local weather team will be on the air every evening of the week, as well as late night and morning shows too. http://stormteam12.typepad.com/stormteam12/

So, 4-5pm weekdays and 5-6 weekends? When does the additional newscast on Sat. evening start?

I want to see Julia Radlick do the "sprinkler".

Or better yet, for extreme shock value.....Mike Donahue and Christine Ferreira, bust out with that on the noon news. Oh yeah.

Seems like tv news is full of "personalities" but a little short on journalists these days.
I could grump that the segment might have taken away time from an important zoning issue story or a school budget investigation, but who are we kidding? If it wasn't this, they would have shown a segment on two new baby zebras at the El Paso Zoo.

Submitted by Myhousemf on Mon, 01/14/2008 - 7:04pm.

Well, it's not like there is an investigation to do everyday, or for that matter, every week.

Why can't we have a Friday Dance Party on our TV station? I'd tune in just for that every Friday!

I was watching AM Northwest the other day and Helen introduces a youtube clip about some dancing new anchors. Wondering if she got the idea from reading this blog.
