What's coming to KOIN? (open thread)

Submitted by Myhousemf on Sat, 01/19/2008 - 7:30pm.

I saw a promo on KOIN saying something was coming in February but it wasn't specific on what.

The promo was something like this:

"On KOIN news 6, you get the stories eveyone is talking about. You get investigative journalism on KOIN News 6. Koin news 6 is bringing news home. This February."

Anyone know what's coming? New talent, music, HD, more newscasts?

Also, does KGW have a new logo?

That's whats coming! meaning more promos about 'must see' stories. It is never too late to start trying to build excitement.

BTW, anybody have any leads on the special reports that are coming?

Maybe they will actually invest in their news product and have a decent news broadcast...but I'm probably dreaming. MIKE DONAHUE FOR PRESIDENT!

Nah, not President. Mayor, maybe.

I really don't know what's coming to Koinage in February, but if that is their newest logo, it's kind of on the bland tip. As we are both graphic designers, both Samuel and I could design something for them a little more flashy. Something that would garner greater attention from their collective viewers.

But I must say, in fairness, that if the updating of the logo lacks flair it is a nimble updating in that it integrates the typography that they've been using latterly in their chyrons – and integrates the station's call sign into the logo, which I rather enjoy actually.

The familiarity will appeal to people who already trust KGW to get their news.

To me, a station's identity really isn't complete unless they also include the call. "Northwest NewsChannel 8" was just a little too generic and sounded like a cable channel. "KGW NewsChannel 8" at least has local appeal. You're Portlanders ... be proud of that, I say!

Isn't it interesting that the NBC stations always has the peacock prominently displayed?

It's-Always-Easier-To-Beg-Forgiveness-Than-Ask-Permssion dept: I nicked the image so graciously provided by Myhousemf to illustrate my own commentary over on The Times; but I have credited and backlinked here.

I agree, Samuel. My first piece of advise to the good people at KGW would be to bow down and embrace the serif. The corporate Helvetica look complete with italics and usually condensed is incredibly stale and threadbare. Just starting with the call letters, KGW, adorned with a classic serif would blaze across your TV screen like a standard.

And doesn't this deserve its own thread?
