Portland Monthly Looking for Editor

Submitted by LynnS on Mon, 01/21/2008 - 11:33pm.

Hi guys, running way way way behind round these parts.* So let's catch up with Portland Monthly, where WWeek says they're on the prowl for a new editor:

After two-plus years at the helm, Ted Katauskas will return to what he says is his “dream job”: writing long-form narrative for PM as its editor-at-large. Katauskas, once WW’ s Outdoors columnist, began working at PM as a writer and “took on more and more management duties over time.”

They're doing a nationwide search, apparently.

*Cablenut starts working from home tomorrow, which will make four of us in the house 24/7. We're adjusting!

I love the euphemistic "editor at large" title. It's the "okay here's a new title now get the hell out of the office" job. That's not a comment on TK's skills -- he must have the patience of Job to have put up with a certain owner for this long -- but I think the cheery spin on his move is just that -- fluff.

I never understood why people buy this "magazine". It's just a compilation of way too much glossy page advertising with very little journalistic substance. The ritzy real estate ads are a hoot-if only to see how much dough the loaded dumbbells are willing to throw away on a way-cool Pearl address. Oh well, at least Paris will have something to look at should she ever deem to visit Portland. Yeah, like that will ever happen!

Probably not many people buy it. It's given away free at upscale hotels, spas, restaurants, etc. The profit for such magazines (assuming there is any) is in the advertising. Single-copy sales are just extra gravy.

TK is a fantastic editor and a great writer. And, yes, he has the patience of a saint. Something tells me this is his decision rather than NV's, and it's a good one at that.
