KGW: HD, New Set

Submitted by LynnS on Mon, 01/21/2008 - 11:43pm.

Missed the early evening, waiting for the 11. Saw the 10, but it looked weird and I'm hoping it was just the CW thing.

Thoughts?

Update: Watching the 11 now. "From the KGW HD STUDIO!!1!" (You guys forgot the OMG!!) Looks MUCH better than on CW, which isn't surprising. The difference between field and studio is a bit jarring. Interestingly, the guys seem to be suffering more from HDitis than the gals, except for Jack Penning. Boy, that guy has white teeth.

I'm still not sure how I feel about the set. The traveling graphic wrapped around the anchor desk almost feels like a parody; I kept waiting for Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert to come bounding out, but it may grow on me. But then, I'm not a fan of busy graphics, at all.

but first thing I noticed were the fake radar sweeps during the weathercast. The same thing people on this blog were harassing KPTV and KATU about a few weeks back.

Those radar sweeps ARE live. You must be watching KPTV!

Submitted by Myhousemf on Tue, 01/22/2008 - 6:18pm.

I too noticed thpse fake radars. I hope they put the real live doppler 8000 on there.

Also, notice those 4 virtual screens of graphics matt can choose from?

Submitted by Shawn on Tue, 01/22/2008 - 12:00am.

Is there online video available of the full 5pm or 6pm KGW HD newscast? I saw a short clip on KGW.com, but would like to see more. Unfortunately I do not live in the PDX area anymore, but I keep up on the media goings on from a safe distance. (Spokane, WA DMA#77) Is there anywhere I can see more video?

Hopefully one day SOON one of Spokane's local news outlets will go full HD. KXLY (ABC) does a weekly segment in HD, but thats it. No other stations HD, yet. KREM (CBS) is a BELO station, maybe KREM is next. KING is now HD and now KGW is HD, it should be our turn?

Thanks fellow news lovers.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Tue, 01/22/2008 - 9:07am.

Belo seems to be rolling out HD in tiers. KGW is in the 2nd tier, so KREM is probably in the 3rd tier. In other words, don't count on it this year.

I work for another station in town...but i'll be honest: it looks good! The new desk, stand up moniter set, and new plasmas are impressive. With the graphics, HD, updated music, KGW finally looks like a top 25 station. I've also noticed that KGW is changing it's news branding from "KGW Northwest Newschannel 8" to just "KGW Newschannel 8" interesting, eh?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Thu, 01/24/2008 - 8:16pm.

small town, non-relevant news droole, across all the stations in fact. Sure, it looks nice but zero content improvement. Great promotional tool I suppose. Portland is just catching up to the rest of the country and similar sized markets. I travel around the country quite frequently now that I am out of the business, and not only is most everyone else in HD in similar markets - and has been for awhile - the news product just seems better...or at least more interesting. KHOU last night was actually interesting to watch. Not sure if Mike Devlin is still there or not, but it was almost like watching KATU 10 years ago.

Submitted by .Chris on Sat, 01/26/2008 - 1:31pm.

Yeah about time they did that. now if they can only loose the attitude with the "we are the best" I know everyone does that but KGW seems to over do it a lot.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Tue, 01/22/2008 - 12:55am.

Maybe it looks worse on CW because it's fed up to the Seattle 'regional op center' before boomeranging back to PDX homes.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Tue, 01/22/2008 - 1:05am.

I've heard through the grapevine that KATU has now significantly sped up their HD plans... from a year or so out, to months away.
Anyone else hear this?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Tue, 01/22/2008 - 1:51pm.

I realized recently that KATU had gone widescreen on the Comcast HD channel. How long has it been widescreen? I also noticed Julia Radlick had a makeup makeover that looks ready for HD, a possible test?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 01/23/2008 - 7:21am.

From what is being talked about around Sandy Blvd. you might think they went out and robbed a bank. Lot's of new things in store for 2008. it's no secret AMNW is moving their studios to a smaller more intimate setting. Why? Maybe to make room for a new MAMMOTH set for news? An HD WX upgrade is in the works. (it is HD, but until KATU is ALL HD, the WX computer will be down-converted to SD) The planned new control room and HD upgrade was deferred to 2009, but word is the GM is one competitive SOB with a great relationship with the Fisher CEO. The term being tossed around is "fast track". If approved, how fast could KATU plan, design, install, test, and hit the air with HD? November? It's possible.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 01/23/2008 - 5:27pm.

Try May. May book. You'll see new HD set. They're building fast right now.

Here's a clip of the open. The moving logo on the desk is distracting, but otherwise I do like the look. The snow scenes were a cool way to start the HD broadcast, too.

Lynn, ever seen ESPN? Those desks are covered with graphics.

It's a trend I don't especially care for.

Who did the refresh to KGW's set? Was it FX Group?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Tue, 01/22/2008 - 9:05am.

FWIW, the CW newscast is supposed to be HD as well... but as usual, CW had "issues" with their master control in Seattle.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Tue, 01/22/2008 - 1:40pm.

And I figured they were having problems with master control up north, per usual.

I also like what I see so far with KGW and aside from a few bugs last night, things went pretty smoothly. The only gripe I have is the animated plasmas they have in front of the desks. They need to put a static graphic or at least slow down their current ones. It's a bit distracting and kind of ugly to be quite honest. Maybe have the NBC Peacock logo on one screen, KGW's logo in the middle screen, and the time (@5, @6, etc)in the third? I dunno.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Tue, 01/22/2008 - 10:26am.

has anybody noticed the new guy on the 10 pm edition Fox-12? Doesn't he look like a French mime?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Tue, 01/22/2008 - 11:52am.

The desk graphics look like something thought of by KPTV. I think they just look too "busy" The rest of the desk looks nice.

I also found it interesting that much of the backdrop is actually carryover from the old set.

And I also DON'T like the new weather graphics, especially where they put the forecast in a box up next to the map showing the temps. The forecast box is crooked and distorted looking on a non-HD set, but could work if it was adjusted a bit.

Also on a non-HD set, the KRCW newscast looks really bad.

Overall, there are good points, but I think KGW overdid it on the graphics.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Tue, 01/22/2008 - 4:27pm.

I wonder if KGW gives tours? I would love to see the HD in person and how all that works. I know their sister affiliate in Seattle (KING 5) does, as I was really bored while visiting Seattle one day, and called to see if they did and yes they did. I enjoyed it. Hopefully, KGW will do the same some day.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Tue, 01/22/2008 - 5:59pm.

The new set, graphics and music look HOT. Now if only there was a KGW repeater over here in Bend. I guess I'll just have to watch that link over and over again...

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Tue, 01/22/2008 - 6:19pm.

KGW had major problems in the 5:00 newscast. Didn't you see those? The funniest thing is that Tracy said, "Do you notice the difference?"

Whoever wrote that should be demoted for supidity. Only 20% of viewers have HD sets and many people still watch the early news on their little TVs in the kitchen. So, 8 out of 10 viewers didn't notice a darn thing.

At the same time, most of the content in the show is not in HD. None of their field cameras are HD and all feed video ain't either. The whole 'HD' campaign is mostly a lie. Aren't journalists supposed to honest? I guess not.

The biggest accomplishment is showing their aging anchors in HD. You've got to go some distance to convince anyone that Tracy and Laural in HD is a good idea.

Submitted by Tv_Viewer on Tue, 01/22/2008 - 9:50pm.

I didn't care for the new set at all. It was way too busy. The two things I noticed: I felt like I should tilt my head to read the graphics and the weather 7 day forecast was cut off. I could only see the middle days.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Tue, 01/22/2008 - 11:38pm.

I'd agree with TV Viewer.

The monitors in front of the desk are really distracting and the whole thing looks a bit overdone. The HD cameras need major tweaking as the black levels are too low (contrasty) and the talent doesn't look crisp. The anchors all look the same as there are no distinctions in flesh tones anymore.

Even on NTSC SD TV's, other programming such as OPB's HD, looks much better than the current HD efforts on KGW. IMHO, they need to do a lot more adjustments to make HD worth watching in the context for news.

Used to work there for 22+ years (engineering) so I have an idea about how things work,..:)

Submitted by ZehnKatzen on Wed, 01/23/2008 - 6:37am.

... and about 1/2 the 11 pm broadcast. Even on our old LD tv, the HD difference was apparent.

I still like the new logo treatment, even though I'm not bowled over by it.

Thanks, BTW, to Myhousemf for posting videos on their YouTube channel. That's skookum and no doubt.

The HD image offered by KGW makes all the other guys look ... well, kind of flat. There's a rumor a few replies above that says KATU is moving up their HD timetable. They better. HD is one of the few TV innovations that look like it's indeed all that.

OK, the quality o the picture looks nice, even on the CW after they got it figured out... my beef with KGW is the spin. People of Portland with 42" Plasma screens... you are being LIED TO! Just like Bush and his cronies, the folks over on SW Jefferson are attempted to pull the HD wool over your eyes. In their own "news story" about the HD launch they talk about how great HD is with it's improved picture and clarity. Yes, that part is true. However, the pictures they are showing to go along with the script are shot with a Beta SX camera set to 16x9 and shooting in SD... Just like the other stations in town in which they essentially insult by claiming THEY are the lying liars pretending to be HD! Get it? The GM was even quoted as saying that the investment made by KGW was one of several millions to bring you the viewer this new technology, and the other stations in town just threw a switch... no investment at all. Huh? You mean the 1.5 (est) million KATU spent 2 years ago on ALL-Digital cameras, editing, and playback equipment was "just throwing a switch"? Lies people, LIES! Hopefully, KGW dials back the rhetoric and the other stations get on the ball and we can get back to debating who has the best hair in Portland TV.

Did KATU buy a switcher capable of HD 1080i? I thought they only were able to produce a SD 16x9 @ 480 lines of resolution?

Just upconverting a SD video source to 1080i should make the overall picture better shouldn't it?

By the way I have to agree that the graphics in the front video screens is moving way to fast.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Thu, 01/24/2008 - 7:46am.

Upconverting works like this... say you have a "widget". That "widget" is designed to hold 4 apples. You only have 2 apples. The upconverting device uses a mirror to make it SEEM like you have 4 apples, but your source material is still only 2 apples. SD video can be displayed on HD, but not any better than how it was originally recorded. Remember ALL video appearing on KGW is originally SD video, widescreen or not. Only the studio cameras, and wx graphics are "full" HD. No weather cams (yet), no Sky 8 (after the May book), no network feeds, and nothing shot by KGW staff is originated in HD. This is how almost every station in the country does it, so I'm not surprised.

Just a viewer here. I mostly like what I'm seeing. The picture is crisp on my HD set. A nice improvement. I especially love how the HD enhances the Google Earth regional weather maps. Conversely, I'm not a fan of the radiating beams of blue light that appear behind just about everything that pops up on the screen. Distracting and kind of cheesy.

Submitted by SeattleTVGuy on Thu, 01/24/2008 - 12:33am.

Don't count on the beams of blue light going anywhere. That's a Belo NW thing. KING, KREM, KGW, and NWCN all have it!

>>Hopefully, KGW dials back the rhetoric and the other stations get on the ball and we can get back to debating who has the best hair in Portland TV.

Steph Stricklen.

The HD looks terrific on my set, though the contrast between the razor-sharp anchors and the fuzzy-def field pieces is distracting. Can't wait to see the helicopter in high def, and I heard that various stationary cams are going that way too. So that'll make for some pretty city shots at night, and breaking news will look cool. Spiky hair gel looks bad in HD. And they can lose the Who-wants-to-be-a-millionaire moving lights any time.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 01/23/2008 - 6:46pm.

KGW is leading the way with HD. There will be mistakes and some cheesy decisions but plenty of good ones too. It won't be a perfect transition, that's for sure. Other stations will watch and learn and when they finally get around to making this multi-million dollar investment, maybe they'll do a better job with HD conversion, maybe they won't. Whatever happens, KGW is setting the standard. The others will follow someday. When you take a risk to be the first at anything, you're always an easy target.

I miss the days of Kathy Smith. "Who had the most interesting hair in Portland TV" would have been a better question then. I still love Mike Donahue's hair back in the 80s. Richard Ross's silver coif – classic and classy

Right now? Stephanie's 'do is very impressive these days. For my money, the best hair on TV right now is Joe Becker's.

B-)

FTW: do you suppose some 'dos these days are done by in-house f/x, or do you suppose they outsource to Laika? Discuss.

I'm assuming your choice of Stephanie Strickland for best hair in Portland is oozing with sarcasm. It's bad. Really bad. My vote for best hair goes to Tracy Barry. Or maybe Stephanie Kralevich. They both look sleek and professional and not stuck in a 1950's sitcom.

...they can't do anything on that station without running promos that make it sound like they're the greatest station the world has ever known.

Most watched, most honored, the biggest this or that...holy christ, KGW does need to "dial it down" quite a bit.

Yes, they're a really good station...but is it completely necessary to endlessly pat yourself on the back with self-serving promos?

Come on Belo...frickin' relax, will 'ya?

P.S. Have you ever noticed that Tracy Berry looks remarkably like the Princess Fiona character from the animated movie "Shrek"?

Take a look at KATU, KOIN and KPTV and watch their promos. Then take a look at KGW.

Thats one of the reasons why I don't like KGW in the first place, they over do on the "We are the best" thing. and your right, they need to dial it down a lot. I know all stations want people to watch their station but please, KGW/Belo if your reading this Take a word of advice and tone it down on your promos.

Then again NBC it self seems to have this sort of attitude... I don't know

As for the HD deal, your not in full "HD" your just the same as the other stations, only partly in HD

I wonder if Carl Click fells frefreshed now that hes not part of a "over extracting/show off" station
