I'm trusting Lynn will permit me to post a highly esoteric question to any tape editors looking in...
I've been tapped to edit a piece for a non-profit with a script that includes what I would call a 'soft jump cut'. Lately used during presser announcements or speeches rather than a cutaway, it looks to be about a 10 frame dissolve to white, 10 frames of white followed by a 10 frame dissolve to the next shot.
Do these numbers sound right timing-wise? Do any of the news org's offer a 'styleguide' (so to speak) on how this kind of jump cut should be executed?
The client wants it as an effect(instead of the tried & true cutaway... go figure)so I'm simply attempting to match what a viewer is likley to see on a broadcast.
Thanks in advance, first time in twenty years I've run into this one...

That would be about right. I personally like to do a hard cut to the white, go 5 frames and then a 3 frame dissolve back (give or take). Depending on the mood of the piece, you can mess with the timing of the disolve and cuts to match the mood. hope that helps.
