KOIN: Jeff Alan Gone

Submitted by LynnS on Thu, 01/24/2008 - 10:09pm.

Over in the open thread, an anonymous commenter says ND Jeff Alan's no longer at KOIN. Can someone confirm that for me? If it's true, he should be proud; no one from KOIN told me. :)

Update: I consider this confirmed now. I've been waiting for this announcement ever since NV took over. They ousted Marty Ostrow so quickly, I was expecting Alan's exit as well--especially since Christopher Sehring's old news director quit his job the same week. Seemed a little too coincidental, and I've still got at least a small bet riding on that horse.

As for Mr Alan, his tenure at KOIN was a sad one, and I didn't envy him. OMI's relationship with him started out rocky (lawyers were dispatched, at least on one side), but by and by I think--I hope--we understood one another, and I wish him well wherever he ends up.

Update 2: Well, well! Mark it on the calendar: PAC scooped me. I didn't know he even knew the names of the news directors in town. And note to PAC: Chris Sehring is KOIN's GM, not the ND. The new KOIN ND is Lynn Heider, late of WAWS/WTEV in Jacksonville, FL (market 49), but longtime news director of WEWS in Cleveland, OH (1998-2004). I assume the Ohio connection is how Sehring knows her. Welcome back to a primary market, Ms Heider, and good luck.

Subject: THANK YOU

I can not even begin to articulate how much each and every one of you have meant to me over the past two years. You all should be very very proud of the exceptional job you have done under less then ideal circumstances. The news product has shown marked improvement over the past months and I know you will keep moving forward and make KOIN # 1 again.

Thank you for all your kind remarks today, it meant more than you know. It has been a sincere pleasure to have worked with you and who knows, our paths may cross again someday. Please feel free to contact me any time. My contact info is below.

ALL MY BEST !

Jeff

The big challenge is finding someone who can work with, inspire and motivate folks that have are beat down, overwhelmed and exhausted.
The new company hasn't given us anything but talen away some holiday time but as always, wants more profits. Jobs go unfilled while the new GM hires a personal assistant. At least Marty could answer his own phones! And send out his own memos!

Oh, is KOIN still on the air? I haven't noticed.

RE: JEFF ALAN

Jeff Alan will be leaving his position as KOIN NEWS 6’s News Director effective this week to pursue new interests within the broadcasting industry.

All of us at KOIN appreciate Jeff’s efforts on behalf of our station over the past two years and wish him well.

His replacement will be announced shortly.

As luck would have it, his replacement is the current editorial director of Benchwarmer Trading Cards, so Kacey will feel right at home in the mornings.

His replacement is a woman news director named Lynn, coming from Jacksonville, Florida

the more things change, the more they stay the same.

too bad he can't spell - either that, or he doesn't have a firm grip on the English language.

Interesting times ahead: Heider is tough and knows what running a competitive shop is all about. I would expect MAJOR changes soon after her arrival. She'll make it a horse race. Finally!

It will be very difficult for her to have any real impact on ratings because she won't get the resources to compete with the other stations. Good morale and improved content will only take you so far. You need enough people to get the job done. Right now KOIN has about half the newsroom staff as KGW.

There hasn't much investment in the station in two years; so it wouldn't beyond the realm of expectation that NV has some plans to make the station competitive and add resources and personnel. There's so much a news director can do with an also-ran unless she has the support of ownership and upper management. Also, the station's promotional efforts need a complete overhaul. I would expect changes on all fronts, including personnel. The time to win has come.

Lynn Heider also worked in Kansas City and did some great things for the newsroom there. They didn't result in ratings (sorry KOIN) but they did contribute to a very high-quality product. That's an outsider's perspective. I didn't work at the station, so I have no idea what she's like as a boss.

Good gosh. This reminds me of KEZI!

God I'd hate to be a TV news director. One day you're the white knight riding in, and the next you're out with the trash and you didn't even unpack. You're a gypsy, Kansas City to Cleveland to Jacksonville to Portland, you think they're all the same, it's like being a radio jock in the 70's. You're at the mercy of uncontrollable, inherited factors but you're expected to work instant magic. You have to smile and rubber-stamp the sulfurous will of devious consultants who bow to every trivial wind with a knife behind their back, and someday, inevitably, you become one yourself. Yuck. Not for me.

As a viewer with no connection to the industry, I can only hope that KOIN will find its way out of the wilderness. Competition is a good thing. Quite honestly, watching the KOIN product is a real challenge. KOIN has good talent but it lacks the kind of solid presentation that I find on KATU, KGW or KPTV. Given the ownership problems that have plagued KOIN for so long, it’s no wonder they’ve languished. It’s going to take a real investment on the part of KOIN’s newest owners to bring it back to life.

A new news director might be a good start. But if station ownership doesn’t give the KOIN news operation the kind of resources it needs to compete with its competition, it won’t mean much.

How ironic. This comes out nearly 2 years to the day SJL/Montecito came in a destroyed the station. 21 of my co-workers were let go. I've moved on, apparently some folks have not.
