KATU: 2008

Submitted by .Chris on Sun, 01/27/2008 - 10:54pm.

Some people on here have been posting rumors for KATU in 2008 such as new people, new sets and new news casts.

Here are my predictions for KATU in 2008:

- KATU will in fact have a 4:00 news cast. But will be "canceled" later in the year to be replaced by a new afternoon show that will replace AMNW (see below)
- Fall 2008 ABC News will extend Good Morning America to 3 hours (Might extend to 4 in 2009 or 2010) This will move up The View to 11:00 (as it is with many other locations) and Have some sort of snyc. talk show on at 10:00
-KATU News midday will extend to 1 hour. (complete with the other 12:00 newscasts)
- Full HD will launch on October 17th, one year after the new graphics package and wide screen format.
- a new afternoon show will launch and will feature some new people. It will use the "new" AMNW Studio. The show will pick back up the whole "spirit of the Northwest" theme, and will feature touching and heart warming stories locally and clips from other shows and networks as well as internet articles. "2 the outdoors" will be a regular segment on the show. during the summer months the show will be live from various locations around the Portland area. Such as the air show in Hillsboro, the Jazz festival, County fairs and even the state fair. This will be sort of like 2 @ 4 but will have more family oriented segments and be more exciting then AMNW and will feature at least one thing for everyone in the family. I also have felling that this could be on at 7:00 intime for the entire family, and be ready for abc's nightly programs instead of 4. Jeopardy! and whell may move to the 4 and 430 or may be even the 6:00 news cast may be canned. But my hunch is 4:00. This is weekdays only.
-KATU's new set will be a mix of "CNN/Fox 12/GMA. will feature plasmas, new enhanced "storm tracker weather center" a "traffic" center for the traffic reports and a new news desk, but will only be used half of the time as most of the time segments will be featured either in front of plasmas, a green screen or someplace else. The new set will occupy half of the old amnw set and extend all the way around to its current "west" location. (west from our point of view on the tv)
-Fisher and KATU will look for a new studio. Downtown Portland or even complete with KPTV and get one in Beaverton or Hillsboro. Date for the move in wont be for another few years, (2010 or 2011 at the earliest)

Thats about it. Fell free to add and comment on the list...

clearly you're an insider. Otherwise, you wouldn't know so much about the set and plans to find a new building.

We all know am northwest is having a new studio built. After its built they might start to work on the news. Report from the news room if they have to. Back in 2002 they did the same thing built a new AMNW studio to replace the then 26 year old set. shortly after they redid the news set (and updated the graphics package at the same time)

I fell this may happen also as the news set is in need of an update. Maybe more like KOMO 4's set?

Submitted by Myhousemf on Mon, 01/28/2008 - 1:14pm.

KOMO's is ugly!

So is the new Fisher graphics package. No one said management had good design sense.

When managers don't listen to designers, what you get is KATU's awful on-air look.

The competition can only hope the new set will continue the trend.

The current graphics package is the best to date. As for this decade, the 2000 and 2002 Graphics package were alright, but 2007's is really the best. Just like the 97 graphics package (the "slanted" box, red box with gold "2") That one was the best in the 90s, and even the best they had so far at the time as it was the first to actually use a "visual" graphic rather then red or white lines. and yellow or white text.

2 things: didn't komo have KATU's current graphics before? and also has katu changed their graphics around the same time every decade? (ie; 1990/2000 1992/2002 1997/2007 etc)

Correction, AMNW is not getting a 'new' set, but rather a makeover of the current one. The 'old' set was moved into another studio in the building to make room for the new news set. Most of the elements are going to be the same with some changes to make room since 'Studio B' isn't as large as 'Studio A' which currently is the home for the news set and was where ANMW used to be located. Given the size of the studio and camera placement in AMNW's new home, we may have seen the last of the studio audiences. There just isn't room.

Submitted by .Chris on Tue, 01/29/2008 - 9:31pm.

Really, only minor changes? Taking this long? Or arte they taking down the set and moving it to the current news set

So when you say "where AMNW used to be" Are you talking about the orgnal set? the one they remodeled in 2002? or the current set

5 weeks to totally dismantle the AMNW set, modify it for the smaller studio, install it in the other studio, add paint, new demonstration area, install kitchen plumbing and appliances. Yeah, those just minor changes. When you tune in and they're back on set, it will have the same look. There won't be a huge change in style. They didn't start from the ground up on this one. It wasn't in the budget. That's getting spent on the new news set which will encompass pretty much all the floor space of Studio A.

Just some background on studios. KATU has 3 of them in the building. Studio A,B, and C. A is where the news set is and where AMNW was up until the first of the year. Studio B was primarily empty and was used for a couple town hall programs, Sports Extra, and for those of you who attended, the Blogger Gathering last fall. Studio C is kind of hidden. Located behind Studio A, it's home to Fisher Pathways, a division of Fisher that does satellite and fiber feeds across the country. When you see a guest on Larry King or O'Reilly with the Portland skyline behind them, it originates from studio C. That should give you an idea of who lives where.

Not a chance. First, because of contracts. Also, Wheel and Jeopardy are big ratings for that time slot (7-8), and any station that doesn't have them is going to have a hard time competing. That's part of the reason most station put them there, too-- they make a good prime access lead-in to primetime.

KATU's 4PM newscast will have a hard time finding an audience against Oprah. It will split the few local news viewers with KPTV. KATU will cancel the 4PM by this time next year. Anjelica will move back to the mornings with Natali - making KATU the only station in Portland to go with an all female anchor team in the morning.

Submitted by .Chris on Mon, 01/28/2008 - 12:02pm.

thats why i had my hunch at keeping the 7-8 slot for the game shows

I predict management change. Pratt's lack of vision and leadership not bringing the station and staff to its fullest potential.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Mon, 01/28/2008 - 10:11pm.

You've got to be kidding me. Lack of vision? Are you for real? Have you seen the 2/On your side push? That's not lack of vision. That's someone trying to revive the numbers. He's doing more than any news director I've ever worked for. You're probably just a useless employee who hates change and doesn't want to work hard.

Rumor mill in the building is that they are running out of space and may be looking for a new building in the next 4 years.

They did seem a bit cheek-by-jowl when I visited.

Pratt is hands down the BEST news director I've ever worked for. He can have an occassional temper, but for the most part he is level-headed, fair and willing to take changes. Pretty much everyone in the KATU newsroom appreciates the hard work he is putting in and what he's trying to do.
You clearly don't work at KATU or you would know there is a definate "vision" in place.

YOU clearly don't work at KATU - or you would know how unhappy the vast majority are with Pratt! The only "vision" in the place involves employees seeing red!

I don't know how to start a new thread. But, hopefully someone can answer this here. What is the name of the awards, for the local TV stations? I know it isn't the Edward R. Murrow (whatever the name is), but how the stations and reporters get their awards. Thanks!

Submitted by Myhousemf on Tue, 01/29/2008 - 2:00am.

Emmy?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Tue, 01/29/2008 - 10:48am.

There are lots of awards for local TV stations.

- Emmys (National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences)
- OAB (Oregon Association of Broadcasters)
- AP (Associated Press)
- Edward R. Murrow (Radio & Television News Directors Association)
- Sigma Delta Chi (Society of Professional Journalists)

And those are just the biggies. There are other awards for photographers and specific beat coverage, and I'm sure you can find more out there.

Yeah, why not upgrade for HD, then move out two years later? Great idea!

I don't watch KATU (who would?), but are the station's ratings higher with this Pratt guy? Vision-smision...let's see the numbers.

I noticed a promo this morning on KATU that Natalie Marmion is moving back to morning anchor. Does anyone know who will be replacing her in the evening?

Submitted by Myhousemf on Tue, 01/29/2008 - 1:58pm.

Angelica Thornton.

Submitted by pdxtvwatcher on Tue, 01/29/2008 - 5:37pm.

...but not really.

KATU's soon-to-be (rumored) weekday anchor line-up:

5:00-7:00am -- Carl Click & Natali Marmion
12:00-12:30pm -- Carl Click & Natali Marmion (unchanged)
4:00-5:00pm -- [new hire] & Angelica Thornton
5:00-5:30pm -- Steve Dunn & Debora Knapp
6:00-7:00pm -- Steve Dunn & Debora Knapp (unchanged)
11:00-11:35pm -- Steve Dunn & Debora Knapp (unchanged)

I haven't heard anything about any talent changes on AMNW or the weekend newscasts.

So the anchor opening that's advertised is mostly likey for a
weeknight spot as opposed to weekends ?

I've always been interested in working / living in Portland. Any
idea what the pay will be for that 4:00 pm anchor job at KATU ?
Thanks for the info.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Mon, 02/04/2008 - 10:52am.

Right around 100k.

KATU pays 2nd best in Portland. Only KGW pays better. I would guess this a six figure job.. but just barely.

BTW, I hope they gave Kim a raise to work a split-shift. Even if she goes home in between the morning and afternoon news, it's still a tough way to live your life.

Does anyone know if they settled on a weathercaster for the new 4pm show?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Sat, 02/02/2008 - 7:14am.

why did they move natie to am and Angelica to the evening

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Sun, 02/03/2008 - 12:09am.

Natali wanted to spend more time with her kids, Angelica can report.. easy switch. They can use Natalie for am news and then she's free to go. Angelica can come in and report and then anchor the 4:00, 4:30 shows.
