KOIN/KPTV Video Sharing Agreement Kaput

Submitted by LynnS on Tue, 02/05/2008 - 4:29pm.

Two days on the job and new KOIN ND Lynn Heider makes her first big public move: She's severed the longstanding videosharing agreement with KPTV.

My source tells me this has already made a huge positive difference in KOIN newsroom morale, where people were getting tired of seeing their video show up first on KPTV. I'm paraphrasing, because I don't have the memo, but apparently Heider says she's not declaring war; she just wants to declare victory when they get the video first.

This does not affect the copter-sharing agreement, according to my source.

Patrick's memo from 2/5/08:

As of today, the news sharing agreement with KOIN is dead.

Except for the legally binding helicopter agreement, we will no longer share any video or story resources.

The agreement as been helpful to both stations over the years but KOIN has decided to go in a different direction.

--This pompous last statement and displayed attitude by Pee--Mac is exactly the reason I'm happy to hear he's losing out on the KOIN resource. Yes, the agreement was helpful to both stations at times, but only in the sense that it allowed Pee-Mac to "Save Mo-Money !" That's his battle cry, and while financial prudence is admirable, scrimping at the expense of employee morale is NOT! Super move for KOIN ! Sounds like the new ND at KOIN is a perceptive, intelligent, human who might have the blank check necessary to do things again without the help of the money-gluttons at KPTV who "de-regulated" the market to begin with trying to cut corners and fatten the wallets(The GM and ND are the only guys getting richer over there with bonuses.)
Correct me if i'm wrong, but aren't KOIN and KPTV competitors in the same fiercely competitive business ? I love LYNN H.'s acknowledgement of that. While I realize KPTV, P-Mac and his G-M define winning only as getting richer, Some news organizations want to win outright--in serving their viewers and, yes, with ratings; Do that first, and the rest will come.
The trouble i've always had with KPTV, is they seem to ask themselves first-- "How can we make money"-- then see if that fits into their plans for serving the viewership. Am I wrong Patrick???

It looks like KPTV is already having a hard time flying their chopper when they need it. Seems like every time I tune in to GDO, that thing is sitting on the ground. Now they have to get up in the air from 4-5PM too? I think the budget is about to get stretched a little tighter over in Beaverton.

That's because the Hillsboro Airport is always fogged in. Look for KOIN to contract with somebody in Troutdale or someplace where it doesn't get fogged in as much. No wonder KOIN was willing to give up first use of the chopper in the morning...it's always grounded.

That video sharing agreement was a way better deal for KOIN than for KPTV. It helped 12 cover pressers and dayside snooze fests. It helped 6 have some decent stories in its newscast.

The 6 hardly ever used KPTV stuff. Mostly went to 11.

This practice should be banned outright as anti-trust, and unethical. Any station that brands itself as "First, Live, Local" or Bringing News Home should certainly do its own legwork. This farce has gone on way to long, and KOIN's new ND apparently got the picture as soon as she rode into town.

Kudos to her, and the the KOIN staff for putting a halt to this practice. How in the world can you make a case to corporate for enough people to staff a decent TV news operation, if you're skimming cream from the competition, to fill in the blanks.

Both stations should pony up the resources to cover this market effectively, or suffer the economic consequences of airing a shabby imitation of "Complete Coverage," which the viewers will reject in a heartbeat.

Long live competition in the Portland DMA! May the best team win.

This will definitely hurt 12 more than 6. The new 4pm show probably figured they would get some material from koin to help fill in the holes.

The only reason they needed KOIN's vid to begin with is that they had no newscast between GDO and the 10 so there was a crew shortage between shifts. With the new show they'll be fully staffed all day.

KOIN still has a looooooooong way to go in terms of its news quality. Did anyone notice tonight's technical meltdown -- right after the Grammys, of all nights? They teased the Scientology protest story the entire evening, and then had to bag it because the video playback wasn't working. (There was no further mention of the "top story" in the entire 30-minute broadcast.)

And your point is?

It's a bit off the point, but I live out of town and want to know if anyone knows the name of the new GM and Creative Services Director at KOIN?
