Weekend Open Thread, Vogon Poetry Edition 2/15/08-2/17/08

One lovely thing about having a blog like this is I get to torture you guys with whatever I want on the weekends: Pictures of my kids, whatever. This week it's poetry--MY poetry. mwahahaha.

I got three hours to myself at a writing workshop featuring Kim Stafford for Valentine's Day.

I haven't been to a writing workshop in 25 years. That last time, I embarrassed myself so thoroughly with my own pomposity that I couldn't face doing another one and have actively avoided the teacher (a fairly prominent regional novelist) assiduously ever since. I don't think I embarrassed myself as badly this time, mostly because I kept my mouth mostly shut and it was only 3 hours whereas last time it was a regular weekly class. *shiver* bad memories...

One of the prompts was to write a love poem about the most beloved inanimate object in our houses. Since I have fibromyalgia, that would be my Tempurpedic bed, which I worship. Here is the poem:

Oh, bed. Oh, my bed.
In winter, you are comically hard when I first slip into you
Needing my heat to soften you to the point where you don't feel like a frozen board
Like I'm lying on the tundra, the permafrost
But oh, my bed
When you warm under my body, you mold around me and hold me up
All flannel and warmth, reflected back, my own warmth captured and transmitted into softness
And next to me, under the down and chenille
My boy, drowsy and moaning in his sleep
His mouth so soft and childlike and the little gray patch in his beard
I turn over on my side, careful of the box in my chest that keeps my heart from stopping
And you hold me up another night and let me sleep
Oh, my bed.

Positively Vogonesque. I love having my own blog.

So! Weekend! Sun! Whatcha doin?

never! My god, before I got that thing I couldn't sleep more than two hours at a time before I'd wake up in such pain I'd have to get up. Fibromyalgia sucks, man.

Favorite Female Anchors: Tracy Barry/Laurel Porter

Why don't we do a best of for off air positions - they are just as valid as on air positions.

We should do a best News Director:
Best Producer:
Best Editor:
Etc.

Who cares who is the best anchor, reporter, etc. Plus many of the best off air folks have worked at more than one, if not all of the stations in PDX.

Julie will need to do something to excite viewers. She's replacing an established and well-liked anchor on GDO. Maybe a little skin will keep those viewers from changing channels. If that doesn't work, Pete could always anchor the show shirtless.

Interesting.

Here is the email from the KPTV News Director:

It is with mixed emotion that I have to report that Jamie Lima is leaving Fox 12.

On the one hand, I am sad to see Jamie leave. Her energy and enthusiasm have been great additions to the team.

Her role in Saturday and Sunday Good Day Oregon has helped those shows grow to number one in almost every hour.

However, I must admit when Jamie told me why she is leaving, I can’t help but be happy for her.

Jamie is about to embark on the opportunity of a lifetime. She is launching her own business and I seriously suspect we will soon see her on national television. I will leave it to Jamie to explain her new endeavor but I would like to wish her the best of luck and thank her for her contributions to the station.

Hey Patrick, what are you smokin' over there in Beaverton?
Can you read the ratings? Your weekend morning news is not "number one in almost every hour" -- not even close.

We'll give you Saturday morning 6-7AM. You edge KGW by .2 rating points. Otherwise, KGW is beating you badly in February. I understand you want to send off Jamie on a good note, but come on... Get real!

Just in case anyone has questions:

Saturday - 6-7AM

KGW - 1.9/13
KPTV - 2.1/15

7-8:30AM (KPTV has the garden show 8:30-9AM)

KGW - 4.08
KPTV - 3.44

Sunday - 6-7AM

KGW - 2.4/16
KPTV - 1.6/11

7-9AM

KGW - 4.1/15
KPTV - 3.3/12

Nope, not winning M-F mornings - just the 7am to 9am hours when the most people are watching. If you're going to win half, win the biggest half.

When you pay peanuts -- it's hard to keep good people. Maybe KPTV will realize that one day.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Tue, 02/19/2008 - 10:14pm.

If it makes you feel better to think KPTV pays peanuts, go right ahead and think it. Jamie left for her own entrepreneurial reasons. She never really had much of a future here to begin with, so it was a good move for her.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Tue, 02/19/2008 - 10:27pm.

Since Shauna and Kim are not leaving anytime soon that may be the case that there isn't too far a female anchor can go at KPTV. The staple base of anchors at KPTV makes decent money, but everyone that has been hired within the past couple of years makes peanuts. Most are part time, none make more than $50k, some make half of that. There is a reason Hilary left, now Jaime. There is no other station in the market that hires part-time anchors. At KPTV I know Jaime, Chad, Julie, Stephanie, Sophie, Jessica, all the sports anchors were all hired as part timers. I am guessing that has changed for some of them, but not all of them. I know some of them still don't even have benefits.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 02/20/2008 - 10:05am.

I'd love a part time anchor job for 50K!

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 02/20/2008 - 2:44pm.

Nope - the $50k is the max for the full-time anchors hired within past two years.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 02/20/2008 - 11:27am.

All of the people on your list with the exception of Jamie are now full timers or will be soon. You don't have to work full time to have benefits at KPTV. I think it's smart to hire on a part time basis until the employee proves himself. Why commit to someone who may not work out? And for the record there are people on that list who had offers from other stations in town and turned them down to stay at KPTV. Fox 12 must be doing something right.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 02/20/2008 - 2:40pm.

People who are good enough to work in Portland have ALREADY proven him or herself. If they haven't, they shouldn't be hired part-time, they should go to Medford. Portland is not a place to learn on the job. Apparently FOX12 thinks otherwise.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 02/20/2008 - 3:08pm.

At least part of her GDO shift. Was Jamie offered the weekday 5-7AM slot? If not, she probably would have been offered the weekend evening spot now that Julie is headed for GDO. Either way, Jamie is looking for greener pastures out of the business and by greener, I mean more money. I'm sure she'll get it. It won't be tough for her to make more than she was making here.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 02/20/2008 - 9:12am.

There's always someone here denying that KPTV pays worse than the other stations in town. It's a fact. We all know people at FOX12 and we all know they pay less for just about every newsroom job. Any other station hiring part-time anchors with no benefits? Come on KPTV, this is market 23.. Part-time anchors! Meredith is making big bucks over there in Beaverton. It's time to share a little bit of that money with your employees. Otherwise, you can expect people to keep leaving once they find a decent-paying job elsewhere. The main anchors aren't the only ones who deserve a living wage (and even they make less than their counter-parts in Portland, BTW)

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 02/20/2008 - 2:41pm.

"There's always someone here denying that KPTV pays worse than the other stations in town."

I don't know any anchor over at 12 without benefits except for maybe Jamie. Besides, I think she made the decision to work only two days a week. So if you don't know the inside, why not just shut up for once? You state that someone here is always denying how bad the pay is at 12. Well, the same can be said for your kind who have the need to come on here and bash 12. This market has the most vitrial for a single station in any market I've been in.

I know for a fact you only have to work 30 hours to get benefits. And my guess is that KOIN probably pays less than everyone here, since they have been so stripped down to a bare bones station. I feel bad for them. I've been at a station that is bare bones and it isn't a good feeling to be there but have nowhere to go. From what I know, the moral is great at 12 and haven't heard anything bad about it.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 02/20/2008 - 9:31pm.

We're in the communication business remember? Everyone knows KPTV doesn't pay well for most positions. If they paid better, they wouldn't be pulling new hires out of such small markets. Stop trying to BS everyone here. You must be in management over at FOX12. No one else would try to sell this spin.

Submitted by Myhousemf on Wed, 02/20/2008 - 10:14pm.

I know there are reporters there that don't have benefits. And because of it, they will be leaving soon.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 02/20/2008 - 3:18pm.

If you know how much their counterparts are making, we'd love to hear it. I don't see how you'd have that information unless you work in HR or are one of the "counterparts". Back up your claims with some proof and maybe we can take you seriously. Plus everyone knows the more experience you have in broadcasting the more money you make. It makes no sense for KPTV to pay these young people as much as some of the older models on the other stations. Ken Boddie and Nancy Francis have more experience than the youngsters put together. They should be paid more for that. That idea goes across the board. Experienced reporters make more than less experienced reporters, at KPTV and everywhere else. That's how it works.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 02/20/2008 - 6:31pm.

KPTV hires a part-time anchor for their weekend morning news. Her co-anchor is from a small market in his first(?) on-air job.

KGW hires a former weekend anchor from Seattle for its weekend morning news.

I need to tell you EXACTLY how much each is making for you to believe the guy at KGW is making a lot more than the 2 20-somethings over at 12?

And you're having trouble taking ME seriously?

Your posts are becoming ever more bitter. What's the real story? Seriously.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Thu, 02/21/2008 - 10:28am.

Grew-up here in Oregon.. Just an old-timer who is not a fan of the way KPTV runs it's operation. They hire young and cheap. It brings everyone down. I won't even get into the kinds of stories they run. We can argue that one another day. BTW, I'm only responsible for a couple of the negative KPTV posts here lately. There is at least one other person who feels the same way apparently.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 02/20/2008 - 10:26pm.

You just helped me make my point. The more experience you have the more money you make. That's what I was saying. Experience vs. inexperience is an entirely different discussion, but if you're strictly talking about the paycheck it makes sense to me that the young ones make less. That's how it should be.

Look,

No matter what job you take in the world, if you don't have as much experience as someone else, in general, you make less. You may get the job over someone with more experience, but it doesn't necessarily mean you are going to get the same pay as the rest. It's the same in television. You put in your time in order to get paid. Period.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Thu, 02/21/2008 - 4:12pm.

People with more experience get paid more money. When I was starting out I made very little money (probably less than most here because it was so long ago) but I made that laughable salary in a triple digit market.. not market 23. KPTV chips away at salaries at other stations because they pay so little and hire such young, inexperienced people. Meredith is in it to make money, I know, but I can still disagree with the way it does business. It's not good for the veterans elsewhere and the youngsters at 12 don't realize they're getting ripped off. Once they figure it out -- they're usually gone. Nobody wins except the suits. That's all I'm sayin'

Submitted by SeattleTVGuy on Thu, 02/21/2008 - 4:11am.

Then start your own Washington Media Insiders and make it required to be registered. Then see just how many people would be willing to send in office memo's about what's going on. We hide peoples identities in TV so that their face isn't out there. It's the same here.

I don't know Latin. I do know a little Pig Latin, and I've stayed in a Holiday Inn Express recently. Does that count?

Has anyone seen this new site, livenewscameras.com? It's a really nice site. Hopefully some Portland stations will join.

Pretty nice service, but is it all Faux News affiliates?

Off topic: I'm surprised nobody has mentioned rumors of KEZI's Rick Dancer possibly running for secretary of state. From Willamette Week:

"Oregon Republicans still have no announced candidates for the three statewide offices on the May ballot. One name floating around for secretary of state is longtime KEZI TV anchorman Rick Dancer in Eugene."

Rick Dancer accepted am award for his interview of a school bus driver. The school bus driver story was a hoax, yet Mr. Dancer still has the award. Would you vote for Rick Dancer?

This is the first I've heard of this since I live in the Portland Metro. Would you mind filling me in and explaining why you believe that he is lying. I'm thinking about voting for him and would like to know your side of the story before I make up my mind.
