KEX: NWCN/KING's Loos to "Morning Update"

Submitted by LynnS on Tue, 02/19/2008 - 10:24pm.

KING5/NWCN staffer Mary Loos is coming to Portland to co-anchor KEX's "Morning Update." Apparently the gig will allow her to keep a hand in entertainment reporting, too.

Why would she take a step down for KEX? I can't imagine it was for more money.

The pay at NWCN is terrible. There is a good chance she is making more money at KEX and she gets to be closer to her boyfriend. Good luck Mary. We'll miss you!

Last I knew, she was dating a KGW reporter - but that "intel" is about two years old

She and KGW reporter Jack Penning are practically married.

Is this true? I thought their relationship ended a long time ago.

The pay at NWCN isn't what I'd call horrible. It's not 'top 25' pay, but that's because it's not a 'top 25' station. Being cable, it's more on par with an upper double digits DMA.

Maybe I'm kidding myself because I work there, but I think it's a good place to work, and I think the pay is OK. Heck, I don't mind getting paid more than I was at KTVZ for doing less in a better environment.

Don't assume it's a step down. I don't know her because NWCN isn't on my satellite, but it sounds like she's a utility player on a regional cable channel and she has a chance to host one of the top radio shows in Portland alongside a local institution. Money's probably better, exposure's likely quite a bit better, and it sounds like there's a personal connection that sealed the deal.

Radio isn't automatically a step down from TV if you're one of a handful of people in a really good spot. This might be one.
