New Web Zine: Oregon Sports Journal

Cliff Pfenning writes to tell us about the launch of Oregon Sports Journal:

Saying there’s a need for more quality sports coverage, including inventive and entertaining coverage, oregonsports, Inc., has launched the web site oregonsports.com and its online magazine oregonsports Journal.

The company is locally owned and the magazine uses the philosophy of being a “green” publication as it is downloaded onto a viewers’ computer.

To highlight the creative side of the company, the web site includes the short film, “Pit Crew Rehab,” which is based on the controversy surrounding the UCLA basketball team’s game against Oregon at McArthur Court, Jan. 24.

“There’s a hole in the Oregon sports community that’s centered around entertainment,” says publisher Cliff Pfenning, who also plays the main character in the film. “Every media outlet sees online blogs as the answer for involving the public, but we’re going to make the sports community a lot more entertaining than just a bunch of blogs.

“Our goal is to cover Oregon sports and engage our readers in a way that focus fans, coaches and players on the fact athletics is a key part of every community beyond just wins and losses.”

Who knows, maybe this will fill the gaps in local sports coverage on the tube.

With full disclosure, I do have an axe to grind with him. He advertised for some writers for his new site awhile back ... and then spammed them with a request for donations for his site. He will present nothing I can't get from The "O," Community Newspapers or other local papers. In my opinion, there will be no real content, it will be a way for Cliff to make some money. Just my two cents. I could be wrong, but I'm not very impressed with the effort. I've been aquainted with Cliff for many years and think he's an OK writer, but not the end-all, be-all of sports, especially in the big city.

Hear that "thud"? That's Cliff Pfenning finally hitting bottom. He went from a daily paper to a twice weekly to a weekly and he couldn't even keep his part-time gig training sportscasters at KBPS! Now he wants to be Portland's web source for sports info?? Not likely.

He actually cares about prep sports and entertaining sports coverage. He has been trying to get this site up and running for many years and it is certainly not about just making money, because if that were the case, he would have given this dream up long ago. He has a passion for this and it's very hard to do this by your self. I would like to see you run a site by yourself that you want to deliver an excellent product with...you try. You try to keep a business going without asking for donations or financial backing.

We have made no money on this site and have funded this site entirely on our own for seven years because he wants to make a difference. Maybe he's tried to do things not in a perfect way, but he has put his heart and soul into this. So, you may have an axe to grind with him, that is fine, but please do not try to muddy his name. How many people do you know who actually care about what they do?

He has spent a considerable amount of time also working within the community to assist with Jefferson High School specifically with no monetary gain. So, whatever you may think, he is putting in effort like you cannot even conceive of. So back off. Thank you.

Cliff: All those of us who have worked with you in the past know you have an excellent personality, but without an editor to back you up, you do not really have any talent as a writer. You really should get a job that can support your very supportive wife.

Good luck, anyway.

Is "green publication" the new euphemism for website, since we use no paper? Love it! Gonna steal it for my site!

I find it interesting that so many people want to dis a guy for actually doing something on his own. I don't remember Mr Pfenning saying he was going to have superior coverage than anyone else or was going to take over the universe of sports journalism in Oregon...did he? He just talked about doing something different. He never claimed to be the greatest sports writer in Oregon did he?

When a man has a dream to do something most people are going to be offended because they themselves will never rise to the occasion to follow their own buried dreams and so they just become "haters" of everyone else who seeks to follow their heart. They can do nothing but try and tear others down.

How creative.

Will Mr Pfenning succeed? For the sake of all those EXPERTS who just know he will fail, I hope not. Again he never claimed he was going to be better than "the establishment" just different.

Here's to being different!!!!!!!

Good Luck Mr Pfenning. Follow your dreams.

Did Cliff ever consider that his "Pit Crew Rehab" video is both insensitive to alcholics and, well, really not funny? It's one thing to fail at humor; it's another to offend people by making light of a sensitive subject.

I'm an alcoholic, and I make fun of AA meetings alla time. It's how I've made it through 20+ years of no microbrew. ;)
